  • I ran my racor last, I'm still going to change the other filters every 10k

I went to the 10 micron as I heard horror stories with pumps starving of fuel with the 2 microns

    Just my 2 cents

That's interesting..... what was the flow rate of the filters?

I've been running a 2micron filter pre OEM filter for about 80k w/o any issues. It has a HIGH flow rate (Racor Brand) which easily exceeds the pump flow..... Seeing my filters after I've changed them, I'm glad I installed one. Toyota do not change the under bonnet filter unless u ask or the light comes on..... not good enough for me so I installed mine b4 the OEM filter

        • I'm running a 2 micron fuel manager kit and also had one on my 120. Had no problems at all with fuel flow and certainly no dirty fuel problems.

            • Apologies, not trying to high jack the thread. I'm will shortly be buying the recommended Racor filter online for my 2010 GXL 150 Diesel and are looking for specialist in Brisbane region who could help me with the install. Recommendations will be much appreciated.

                • Recently I had the Fuel Filter light come on. Delayed us by 2.5hrs on a recent trip whilst we got RACV to "fix the car". The guide on the passenger visor says with reference to the fuel filter is that if the light is flashing it means water, if the light is solid then contact your dealer. From what I have read in this thread, the fuel filter doesn't have a recommended km life, but should be changed when the light comes on.

I also assume that the light coming on is a measured pressure difference between the input & output, i.e. the filter is partially blocked & the fuel flow is reduced.

So I guess my question is could we have continued on our trip with the light on? I think we had 500km to go to get home at the time. We had driven 80km to get to the next major town already. Just curious if it occurs & we are "outback" at the time.

                  Cheers

I thought the recommended service life of factory filter was 40000kms. I think it may have even been included in the manual as work required on the 40000km service for the early vehicles, but was dropped somewhere along the line (don't quote me though) and changed to "only replace when light comes on".

IMO it is not good practice to leave replacement until a warning light appears.

You all should be replacing the under bonnet filter every 40k and the under body filter every 40k, alternating between the replacements.
This should be an absolute minimum, and extra filtration down to 2 micron should be high on the "must do" list for anyone that hasn't already done so.

below is a pic of the innards of the 2 micron filter element I replaced today at 20,000kms. This extra filter setup is installed after the oem under bonnet unit so has picked up crud that has passed the under body and under bonnet filters and was destined to go through pump and injectors.

                        • Knocked up a bracket for the racor this afternoon. It's pretty rudimentary but sites it all neatly.

Just need to pick up some thread sealant plumb it all up.

Question though - having not worked with diesel engines at all before whats the priming process once I've plumbed it? Any tips before I pull the existing hoses off? Talk to me like an imbecile - it's ok.

                          • No just pull the hoses off and reconnect . From memory the top of racor unscrews and you pump it to prime it( should come with instructions). With the factory filter, press the button on top until it becomes to difficult to depress and you should be good to go. Start her up

                            • The black stuff in the filter is not necessarily dirt or gunk. Diesel breaks down and forms ashphaltine which is black. I recon that's what's caused the 2 micron filter you've cut open to be the colour that it is.
