  • Thanks Guys a big help. I'm thinking of buying a primer pump for fuel manager to make it easier,so there's no need for that then . Coke Zero will do me first, then beer after she starts.
    Cheers

    • I'm one of the minority who have fitted a Racor 230R2 (2 micron) as a Final filter. Because some suspended water and fine particle contaminants can pass through the TMC filter media - both can cause erosion in the D4D injectors.

Sure there is a slight risk of increased flow resistance (if the Final filter becomes partial clogged) & then TMC filter protection warning won't detect this. BUT with good maintenance practices this is highly unlikely with the Racor very high flow rate & capacity filter. Regular filter draining / change practices / only BP or Caltex Premium Diesel from high volume outlets & I see this configuration as best option.

Note hose config allows easy lift out of either filter.

See prev comments this thread (quote)
His advice was to install a 2nd Filter inline.... the Racor 230R Filter. Apparently, not only does this filter down to 2 mircons but also the filter contains a "special form of filtering paper" that will not let water penetrate through with a success rate of 99%, along with having the associated visible water trap as well, plus has a (higher) flow rate of 114 litres per hour.....

Put it in and be happy. Service both filters maximum 40K.

        • I have a Racor 230R10 fuel filter under the bonnet before the factory filter. I had it installed by a mechanic. I have replaced the Racor filter once myself after 16000km. It is now due to be replaced again.
I am happy to replace it myself but have been thinking whether this is wise. My car is 3 years old but I have an extended Toyota warranty for another 3 years and I reluctantly will get it serviced at a Dealership to ensure any warranty claims are not an issue. This is my concern if I replace the Racor filter and not being a mechanic and I have fuel related failure/problems -injectors, fuel pump, engine,... etc, does this make it difficult for me to claim and easy for Toyota to reject?
So is it wise to get the filter replaced by a mechanic or just to continue to replace it myself?
          Your thoughts are appreciated.
          thanks
          David

          • this should be a no brainer and all diesels should run a pre filter..... and I am not just saying that because I work for the company that makes the direction plus brand of fuel manger kits.

we use and recommend a 30 micron pre filter, because most of the factory final filters are 5 micron and as such to run two of them would be massive overkill and not completely necessary.

we sell a massive amount into the Toyota landscape and export for Toyota as well. nice and easy to install and very easy to maintain and look great

            • I am about to fit a PRE-Filter to my 2015 model. After reading a lot of for and against, and trying to weigh up all of the issues, I have settled on a Donaldson 3um filter kit. The reason is the obvious need for high pressure common rail diesels to have high quality fuel. And the fact that I get a lot of it from Aboriginal communities in the center. The Donaldson is the only brand that I could find a flow rate for at the quoted Un filtering level. If as has been written in this column, that D4D's need 20 to 60 LPH, then the Donaldson flow rate of 114 LPH at 3um surely does the job. Phil

Phil, Racor also do a suitable filter down to 2 microns and with a high flow rate as well. Also, The type of paper used excludes any water passing through as well

                • Hi Rob, Thanks for the reply. I was looking for a Racor, as most PP'ers seem to use them. I wanted a 2um filter as that is what the literature says is needed but I could not find any proper info on the Parker web site. Really frustrating & for what I wanted, parts had to be purchased from overseas. Donaldson are here in Aus, their website is really good with plenty o0f easily digested information, and I can get the part from nearly around the corner here in Sydney. Phil

                    Completely agree.

I installed the Direction Plus kit (which provides instructions for a secondary filter) but used the 5 Micron Fuel Manager cartridge and plumbed it as a pre-filter. Yes, perhaps massive overkill, but what the heck, coz I can...LOL. There have been NO side effects in regards to flow rates and I am happy knowing that it is an additional insurance policy for my D4D. It has never run better.

I should add that the Direction Plus brackets are pretty schmick and look the part once installed as well. Just make sure you get the appropriate sealer for installation of the inlet and outlet barbs, plus the blanking plugs in the main body of the filter kit.

That sure looks like a rebadged Donaldson kit. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Donaldson...0AAOSws4JW8IML
                          $108.00 including 2 cartridges.

As an aside rusty62 your picture a few posts back shows what looks like codan non fuel injection hose used, maybe I am wrong and it is injection fuel hose as i was told the ordinary h511 hose cannot handle the CRD pressure.

These lines are on the suction side of your pump. No pressure.

                              • SPEEDFLOW fittings

Now time to install the CAT pre-filter. Got everything twice..another story.....

How much do we need to tighten Speeflow fitting? The hose ends 411 series feel too loose when tightened by hand, it seems they will come loose with engine vibration. So do I use some medium strength Loctite or just a little help from a spanner will do and the fittings do not come loose? I see lot of PP members have used Speedflow but I am unsure of the above scenario, any guidance will be appreciated.

                                TIA.
