I know Toyota gave me some supplementary documentation for installing a Aux Fuel Filter to help guard again dirty fuel & Algae, etc....

I'm pretty sure your warranty would be fine

        • As long as the factory filter is in place and the auxiliary filter is fitted pre genuine fuel filter it is all good. That is from the service manager at a well respected toyota dealer in Brisbane. Also, in the case of a warranty claim, it is up to Toyota to prove your filter caused it, which would be very very hard as long as the filter has the correct flow rate and the genuine filter is still fitted. I say go for it.

          • So after reading all this what it meant to be THE best filter/water separator on the market ?

            Comment

            • Good question, and one I'm sure you won't get a definitive answer too. After all the research I did, I chose the Racor filter assembly. Reasons being the high flow rate (no extra load on the lift pump), good water separation abilities (using genuine filters with the "special" water resistant paper), and easy local support (local truck parts place stocks Racor filters). It also helped a fair bit having AMTS' bracket available, making it a simple bolt in affair. This is just what I came up with, and I'm sure others will have other opinions, which at the end of the day is all you can really ask for.

                      • Hi All,
I would love your thoughts -as I am getting confused.

I am installing an extra fuel filter very soon after reading PP and some very kind replies after some questions.
I have made a decision and purchased a Racor 230R10 and with 2 spare R20T filters (10 micron filtration) and the fittings needed to do so. So I am locked into going this way( while the 10 micron filters last). I also have purchased AMTS's bracket to instal it with.

I originally intended to fit it as a pre filter as this is the general recommendation (hence the purchasing of a 10 micron spec) .
I don't feel confident on the install so am getting it done for me. However, I have read recently where a very well know diesel fitter is recommending to fit extra filters after the Toyota filter as the factory filter warning systems for water & restriction will still function normally. I was speaking with my installer today ( Ex Toyota) as he wanted to see the job beforehand and also recommended to fit it after for same reason - but is happy to instal it either way I prefer.

I can see an argument for installing for both pre or post the Toyota filter - this is my dilemma - which way and why?

PRE - suits my purchased 10 micron filters.
                        - should help to stop water and 10 + micron particles
                        - will do the hard work - cheaper replacement cost filter ($65 Racor, Toyota dearer)
                        - no warning of water or particle blockage though? Maybe loss of power or surging?

POST - Factory filter warning systems for water & restriction will still function normally with the Racor next to stop any water that gets past the Toyota filter.
                        - Racor will be redundant in this position for particles as it is 10 micron and the Toyota filter before it will stop 2 or 5 microns?

However neither position should cause any issues for fuel restriction ? ( as 114LPH spec)

I also could not locate R9 fuel hose either through Pirtek (only R6), Enzed (only R7) or Bursons ( only R6 or R7). Any thoughts?
Ended up purchasing Enzed's brand. The writing on their hose is-'RPD2010 TOTALRUBBER FUEL LINE SAE 30R7 I.D.10mm(3/8)' Is this good enough quality? Parker or Gates better?

I welcome your reasons for why you think my Racor should be pre or post and should I use this fuel hose or buy some more?
                        thanks
                        David

                        • David,

I too have just gone through the same dilema, though after thinking it through for a while came to the conclusion that the best configuration was PRE, with the optional water sensor fitted.

If you place it pre, it may help stop water and the 10 + micron particles as you say. There will be an earlier (than factory) warning of water if you fit the optional water sensor (and if water gets through the Racor, the factory filter is still there providing some additional 'buffer'. You will also have warning of blockage as the factory filter is monitoring suction, which will increase as the Racor clogs.

If you place it post, the factory filter's suction sensor will not provide any indication of the Racor becoming clogged, resulting in greater load on the injection pump without you being aware.

If you purchase the RK 30880 water sensor for the Racor, it will just screw straight into the collection bowl, and the sensor simply needs 12V from ignition power, ground and has an active low output. This means it's really easy just to run the output to a relay for isolation (other side of relay coil connected to 12V ignition power) and then wire the normally open contacts of the relay in parallel with the two wires running to the factory filter's water trap. This way you don't need to run any wires inside the cabin or mount LEDs/buzzers at the dash - it's neatly integrated with the factory water-in-fuel indicator on the dash which will now trigger if either the Racor or factory water sensors are tripped.

                          Cheers,

                          David.

                          • Hey David, agree with all David has said (confusing hey).

Everything D4DDave has said I agree with, plus he has missed one important thing, that being if the factory filter is the last filter before the engine, no warranty issues. For this reason alone I would stick to setting it up as a pre filter.

Clever thinking with the water sensor, I was trying to work out a neat way of doing this, I think you've solved this for me.

                            Cheers

Thank you for you're reply and very clever idea.
Do you recall the cost of the RK30880 water sensor?

When I was getting my parts from Enzed the manager who has a Racor fitted was saying you can get an optional extra part that automatically releases any water trapped. It has a sensor that releases water when it gets to a certain level. You can be driving along and it just does it - you wouldn't know. It needs 12V power to it. It just screws in to the bowl underneath. Cost I don't know.
Whether you have enough room with AMTS's bracket I am not sure as there is not a lot of clearance at the bottom.

                              thanks

                              • David,

I didn't actually proceed with purchase of the Racor option, but purchased a Water Watch instead as it turns out. Difficult decision but the reason being that I was not convinced of a filter's ability to trap water, whereas the Water Watch is a purpose built, patented product designed to force water to the bottom of the bowl for fast, sensitive detection. Each to their own.

However, cost of the sensor is around $115 on eBay. For example item http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Racor-Die...item4184166061.

I have never heard of a water sensor that automatically dumps the water.

As for space under filter for the sensor when fitted to AMTS' bracket, I actually had some discussion with him about this before changing to the Water Watch Option. I was not able to find a dimensioned drawing of the water sensor, so it's hard to be sure, but I think it will be just OK, as it does not look like the sensor will protrude much if at all below the water release port. See http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rc...,d.dGY&cad=rja.

I am planning connect the Water Watch's sensor in parallel with the factory sensor as described in my earlier post. I have not fitted it yet. AMTS is currently working with me to develop an updated revision of the MKII bracket that also fits the Water Watch.

                                Cheers,

                                David.
