  • TRIP REPORT - Glasshouse Mtns 7/3/10

What was going to be a short trip to Mt Mee turned into a run through Glasshouse, due to Mt Mee being closed by the EPA.

Mud, Mud and more mud, including the scariest bog-hole I've ever attempted to date. Considering the fact that I (and Stewy) only had Grandtreks on board, I thought it remarkable that I wasn't rescued at any stage, although at one time it looked like I was going to be introduced to a fence and at another time I did have the snatch strap all ready hooked up.

Thanks to all for talking me through the tricky bits, the experience, once again was invaluable.

The beginning, a small climb off the gravel road.

    Fozzy,

Great Write Up mate. I'm so glad the weather held out for us.
The water crossings later in the day just go deeper and deeper, which I felt was a bit of a concern.
I still have a muddy residue on the windscreen from the 2nd last bog hole,... playing submarines.
Yes, our Grandtreks only just made it through the mud and clay, and mine have 55k on them, so they're pretty worn.
Or maybe it was just our driving experience on show

For Gordon, Matt, Snaga and Hutch, can you add any more pics/video to the day out ?

    regards

Re: TRIP REPORT - Glasshouse Mtns 7/3/10

Oh, and did I mention that out of 6 vehicles, 4 of us lost our front plates going through the water at some stage?

        Some more images

I THINK Snaga was using his locker, he made it up fairly easily it seems, although he's always talking up the 90.

And even left evidence of his passage

Not the best shot, but driving through it it felt like it was a metre deep to me. All the navigator could say was "$hit, $hit!!" as we slithered along. In reality it was about 10cms deep, can anyone confirm?

Re: TRIP REPORT - Glasshouse Mtns 7/3/10

Yes ten centimetres tops and it was gravely underneath, most of the bog holes looked worst than they were.

Can't wait for the rest of the photo's. Another great run in the bush.

I have some battle scratches above the 4000 vvti sign on the back quarter panel from were i drifted into that bush on the corner. the 694's just didn't want tp go around the corner.

We do need to organise a beach run next, take all of the kids out as well.

Hi all, thanks for another great day on the trails
Just got home from what was supposed to be a quick trip to the GC turned into an overnighter
Hopefully I'll get the vids downloaded then uploaded shortly. Any pics will have to wait till I pick up my laptop from the repairer tomorrow. (gotta love extended warranties... avoided a $2000.00 repair bill apparently  )

Yep, locker was in  First real obstacle where it's made a difference I'd say.
            Cheers, Leon

Gordon makes light work of the first little step up...

And Snaga was not far behind:

Stunning views forced us out of our vehicles:

It wasn't long before we found our first real water crossing. After walking it, the line was quite easy; a few deeper holes but the Prado's lapped up every challenge:

Snaga kindly did the first run through the bog whilst we waited. He disappeared around the corner and we waited... and waited. Hmmm, we started to worry if he made it. Then triumphantly he returned. Even his Prado was smiling.

Sticking close to the left bank, we all made it through:

Then we arrived at the bog hole that casuse some damage to Snaga's underbody on an earlier trip. We carefully pondered this one.

Fortunately, we pondered long enough for other cars to drive it and they seemed to already know the 'easy' line. We followed soon after.

I have some videos that are still uploading, so will post them later. In the meantime, here's the teaser from the other side of the bank. This was a fun crossing.

There were other crossings that also resulted in water lapping up over the bonnet. Thankfuully the diff-breathers were in, and this was the first time I really had a chance to rely on them. Mind you, not all of us had diff breatehers, and there was no drama for anyone. Possibly the diffs had cooled enough before we attempted the crossing.

Finally, Stewy liked the look of his car, so borrowed my camera. Here's all the pics you took Stewy...

She's beautiful Stewy... even with a little mud on her .

                Oh, one more thing...

Water crossings and license plates don't mix. Always a good idea to remove the front license plate before starting out. We were very lucky we didn't lose a plate... Water-crossings claimed 4 from 6.

Did anyone get any Pics or Video of Water Crossings?
I know I had water up to the windscreen on 1 occasion.

Ooops correct that,... just found LFaR's vids on YouTube -

Stewy, I've got a reasonable video of you going through that second-to-last hole, but my camera's so old I have to locate some software to transfer it off the tape in the camera onto the HDD before I can post it.

                        Stay tuned.

                          Great pics and trip report!
Question: How does one lose their front number plate in a water crossing? Did it get ripped off the screws or did the screws come loose?

                            Hi Amts

If you go too fast through any water crossing without at least 4 screws in the plate the water is forced in behind the plate and tears it off the screws. At Nth Stradbroke Island at Xmas and there was a water crossing to the beach at Adder Rock that was about 750mm deep and 3mts wide, every second car that went through lost the plate. Some enterprising kids went wading through after the fisrt day and brought out 30 odd plates and tried to sell them back to owners from a hastily set up roadside stall.

                            Regards, Richo.
