  • Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

Based on Sidewinders experience with the Milford cargo barrier described in another thread topic, I went looking for an alternative.

I have found another option to the Milford.

Autosafe make one, and it fits the Kakadu (which is what I am looking at buying). Haven't seen it in person yet, but quotes are up to $200 less than a Milford. I rang them for their distributors in my area.

I have got mixed messages from Toyota on their standard accessory cargo barrier. Some say it fits the Kakadu. Some say it doesn't. Anyone with one yet?

I have an Autosafe one in my 120 Grande and it has been great.

I also have the Autosafe barrier in my 120. Very happy with it.

Other options to look at are Ausgaurd, Black Widow, ORS, 4WD Systems, any of the companies that make storage solutions (drawers) for vehicles. i had a look on the Ausguard site as they had a good one for the 120 which allowed positioning this in two locations depending if the middle seat was locked down or folded up but they havn't got anything listed on their downloadable PDF catalouge but that may not have been updated yet.

Not sure if Black Widow do a full size barrier or only half size to suit mounting above drawers also I believe that ORS are resellers for Ausguard but may do their own.

There is a company in Adelaide which I have heard very good stories about that make drawers at pretty reasonable prices also also do cutom barriers. These guys are called Trek Tech but unless you are in Adelaide I would suggest that the cost of a custome manufacture on top of transport becomes pretty steep. I know about four people with Trek Tech setups and they are all wrapped in them

The Toyota one shown on their web site has enormous gaps to allow for the air bags. Seems hardly worth installing it.

I can't work out how it is mounted as there are no fittings in the vehicle where it shown bolted on.

Will continue the search for a suitable one.

I would assume there is a mounting kit that fits into the trim if there are no existing points that it fit to. The image above suggest to me that there are four points. All of them of them have a screw on handles. The bottom two look like the have tie arms that connect back to the wheel arch just above the floot (you can see a slighlty white or shinny bump at floor level) and the other two just under half way up barrier look like the have tie arms back to the top of the trim just below the window.

I agree that there is a lot of space up top. Would stop large objects. Would be interesting to see one fitted to a GX without the falsh floor for those great seats

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

I too explored other options to Milford.

I looked at Autosafe but they aren't ready yet...depending on who you talk to there depends on when they're ready...this seems to be the go from many suppliers for 150 accessories at the moment. I had a Caddy poly/mesh barrier (which I loved) in the 120, but Caddy haven't even looked at making a barrier for the 150 (they need a 150 for 4 days).

As the 150 is a work vehicle and I need a barrier now, I (reluctantly, based on feedback on this site) went for a Milford, which was installed today. Looks fine, fits fine...so far so good.

A photo from another thread on this site shows the rear seats removed and there does not appear to be any obvious attachment points where the Toyota barrier is shown attached.

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

I don't not have a Milford in my 120 but from what I have seen (ie Install thread that Joey performed as well as my father in laws in his 100) the Milford is mounted by drilling new holes and inserting retainer bolts. So there may not be any obvious mounting point in a stock 150 but there would be after installation. I would suspect that they drill through the wheel arch to fix the base retainer bolt and then into the wall of the vehicle for the top mounts.

Also, it appears that it is relying on the middle seats for support. Looks weak to me. You never want to test these things in real life, but it would be nice if the barrier at least looked like it would do the job.

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

I agree the bottom mounts on the factory barrier must be drilled into wheel arches. I had a good crawl over one in the sales yard yesterday and there aint much solid behind the plastics where the photos suggest the bottom brakcets are attached - and a bit of gap between the plastic and the wheel arch on the passenger side. The top brakets are into factory locators.

Anyone out there with photos of their own rig with the factory barrier installed? I do not like the open gaps either side, but I am also not sure on the floor straps I have seen on the Milford photos.

Still can not find a Toyota dealer with a clear answer on whether the factory barrier suits a Kakadu. Computer says yes but I guess I want to hear from someone who has done it. Will start calling interstate dealers and ask them.

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

I recently bought a GXL and got the Toyota cargo barrier installed on purchase. The Toyota dealer had to remove all the trim and fit four steel brackets inside the trim. The trim is then replaced over the top of these brackets so that the 'knobs' that you see in the photos are screwed into the steel brackets. Obviously the steel brackets are flush just inside the plastic trim. It is quite a neat fit and the barrier as a whole is pretty good. It appears to be quite strong however the only real test is the one I hope never happens.

The only downside is when the apprentice in the workshop drills holes for the bracket and punches the drill-bit into the exterior skin of the vehicle. Not just once but twice! That is how I got to see the installation job half way through.

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

                          Hi All,
My first time on this forum and new to 4WD.
Bought the Kakadu about a month ago and had a cargo barrier fitted as part of purchase.
Frankly speaking the design and install is very very bad.....so much so that the Toyota Dealer has agreed to replace side panels which they damaged in the install process and is checking if actual install was correct.
Furthermore the barriers are difficult to take in/out.
Once installed the rear seats are unusable (which is OK as you obviously plan to use that area for cargo) - but also the rear cargo mat can not easily be taken out to clean - requires the cargo barrier to be raised so there is some clearance to allow the mat to slide in/out easily.
Also the 2 lower fittings were not aligned to same height - right hande side is significantly higher off the floor than left hand side - service guy told me they had to do that as the air cimpressor in the kakadu means that right hand side has to be higher - when asked why not match it by installing the left hand side to same height he seemed miffed as to why someone who has just spent $83k ona brand new car expects it to look like a professional installation and said they were designed that way.
                          Very poor.
I have been away for a month and no that back on deck will get it sorted with Toyota.
Cargo barrier aside, the car has been outstanding.
                          M.L.

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

I have a pic of the Autosafe barrier that JSloosehead sent me looks as if it attaches to the grab handles at the top which have been removed and replaced with a metal bracket. And also looks to have two brackets that attach to the wheel arches.
Am am still not keen on the gaps left on either side for flying object to protrude. I have a Gx that does not have rear curtain airbags so was hoping to find a barrier that was specifically designed for the GX !!
Anyone out there have any luck with this ??..

(Sorry the thread attachment quota has been reached it would not allow upload of the Image)

Anyone with a barrier installed, are you able to tell us the distance from the base of the barrier to the rear of the cargo area (ie the inside edge of the plastic stip), and the cargo barrier model.

I am trying to understand whether my 60litre engel will fit with various barriers once there is a cargo barrier in place.

                              Thanks
