Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

    John (JSloosehead),
I'll measure the distance and come back to you - later today or tomorrow.
Mine is the Kakdu with Toyota optional cargo barrier installed.

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

      Distance is 910mm.......at floor level.
This is distance from actual barrier to end of the carpeted area (start of the plastic molding that forms the rear of the space).
However - depending on height of your fridge you will need to discount that number as the cargo barrier slopes to the rear, and the rear door slopes to the front - as each goes from floor to ceiling.......therefore both reducing the distance (space) available.
      Hope this makes sense.
Depending on length of your fridge it might prove worthwhile to inspect first hand.

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

        Thanks so much ML.

My fridge is 790 long, and the friddge slide is 880. So length looks OK and I should be able to make a floor that sits on top of the rear seats that holds my fridge slide. But I guess the sloping seat and rear door is the real issue. if they come in by more than 120mm in total over the height of the fridge (440 plus 60 for the slide plus 15 allowance for the floor). Now to find a dealer in Brisbane with a vehicle with a barrier who will let me load my engel in as a test!

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

          Hi there

I found my best alternative was to make my own. Even the cost was better, only $115 for the lot. It is a case of do you let the barrier go hard up against the side and stop the air bags or leave the big gaps down the side and let a flying object kill you instead??? I made mine in between. I left about 100mm gap at the same angle as the pillar. Hopefully (thats hopefully!!) enough to let the air bag deploy but small enough to stop any missiles from the back. I decided to do this as it will only be in when we are on a 4x4 trip and the rear area is fully loaded. Many people have had accidents without curtian airbags and survived but not many do from a hammer in the back of the head at 80km/hr. As for its not adr approved, this is a rating for what it will stop. I looked at many others and have gone alot further than these in strength. I have been building street cars for years and have learn't just because something comes out with an approval, it can usually be made better and stronger again. I'm not talking about making your own seat belts or anything like that, I'm talking accessories.
I will post a photo when I get it in the car.

          Thanks

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

            From: Gumnuts
            To: JSloosehead

Sorry about the delay. I'm lucky if I get a chance to check my emails once a week. I sat inside the rear area with the rear door shut to get the measurements and measured from the barrier to the plastic on the inside of the back door.

Keep in mind that the cargo barrier actually leans rearward as it gets higher to about halfway and then leans forward again (to sit nicely behind the seats).

At floor level of the GXL (So on top of the folded down seats) the distance is over 90 cms. At it's shortest length it is about 77-79cm (hard to measure exactly). The shortest length is just above the bottom of the rear window or about 50 cm from the floor. I don't have an Engel yet but I see that the measurements are 44.1 x 79.0 x 49.0cm. IT WILL BE TIGHT. If the Engel is only 44 cm high it will fit slightly under the narrowest part of the barrier (not including any slide you might have it on). If the handles of the fridge are included in Engel's length measurement then I would say it will fit otherwise it may not.

There's no real movement in barrier once fitted and all the fittings are tightened, however you may be able to bend it forward a centimetre if the fit was that tight.

Sorry I can't be more help but without actually trying the fridge in it's hard to say exactly.

On a side note, I'm reasonably happy with the barrier. Once you take it in and out once or twice it becomes easier. Once all the fittings are tightened it is firm and I don't have any rattles. I know other people are critical of the Toyota barrier but I can't see much slipping past the sides if the airbags deploy etc. I'm pretty sure an Esky's not going to make it through the gap and I'm not too bothered if one of the kid's pillows or sleeping bags gets by! The only problem was with the damage caused during install and that wasn't the fault of the barrier. By the way, the cars been repaired by MY panel beater (like new) and I did get a pretty good sweetner ($$$ off the price).

            Thanks

              Gumnuts,
What was the damage you refer to??
Was it due to the installation by Toyota?? (that is my problem - waiting on toyota to get replacement panels!)

Re: Cargo Barriers - Alternatives to the Milford

Yeah, they let the apprentice fit the cargo barrier. The boss would have said "That's a simple job. Surely he can't stuff that up!"
Anyway, he has drilled the holes from the inside of the vehicle and punched the drill into the exterior skin of the car from within. Not once but twice! When you looked at it from outside, it looked like two nice little pimples side by side near the D4D sticker at the back window. The paint on top of the pimples had obviously cracked and it need to be fixed to stop any rust in the vehicle. He's fairly lucky that his drill hasn't penetrated the skin.
I had a few options available to me at the time but I ended up getting a 150 for a pretty good price and damage fixed by my repairer. Now I'm a very happy camper but I don't have a high opinion of Toyota's quality control/training/service. Lucky they make a good car which sells itselfs.

Bought the Kakadu about a month ago and had a cargo barrier fitted as part of purchase.
Frankly speaking the design and install is very very bad.....so much so that the Toyota Dealer has agreed to replace side panels which they damaged in the install process and is checking if actual install was correct.
Furthermore the barriers are difficult to take in/out.
Once installed the rear seats are unusable (which is OK as you obviously plan to use that area for cargo) - but also the rear cargo mat can not easily be taken out to clean - requires the cargo barrier to be raised so there is some clearance to allow the mat to slide in/out easily.
Also the 2 lower fittings were not aligned to same height - right hande side is significantly higher off the floor than left hand side - service guy told me they had to do that as the air cimpressor in the kakadu means that right hand side has to be higher - when asked why not match it by installing the left hand side to same height he seemed miffed as to why someone who has just spent $83k ona brand new car expects it to look like a professional installation and said they were designed that way.
                  Very poor.
I have been away for a month and no that back on deck will get it sorted with Toyota.
Cargo barrier aside, the car has been outstanding.
                  M.L.
Does this mean the barrier isn't level?

How difficult is it to take the barrier out put it back?

Cost quoted was $550 plus two hours of labour.

Just ordered Autosafe cargo barrier as used them in the past in a disco - direct from manufacturer in boronia and they are installing it. Quoted $410 + $50 install + GST = $506 all up. Be interesting to see how it looks - hopefully OK.

I think the apprentice installed my barrier too. Terrible job which is being fixed at the initial service (including a whole new trim) The hole for the drivers side bottom bracket was cut in the wrong spot and also way oversized. Check out the photos! The right hand side lower bracket should be parallel with the floor at the floor level, not on a 45 degree angle half way ip the panel.

                      Cheers, Sam.

Sam, I have same issue on Kakadu - right hand side floor bracket is installed well above left hand side.....I was told by Toyota that it has to be this way due to kakadu having air compressor on right hand side and so can't install bracket at floor level.
What is your understanding of the reason? (Assume youhave kakadu?)
Have Toyota agreed that it can be installed at floor level?
Have you had it fixed yet, and if so what is the end result?

Very interested to see a photo of this barrier fitted in a GX any ideas if it leaves voids on either sides as the standard barrier does.
I own a GX and don't believe the standard barrier does a decent job of protecting the cargo area.
Further more My Gx is only a 5 seater and does not have the curtain air bags at the rear so I don't need the voids to be there !!
I have seen photos on another thread of the Black widow that fits quite nicely but this barrier looks a lot more pleasing.
How does the black widow barrier get away with encroaching on the curtain airbags in the GXL ??..

Sorry for the late reply. I have had the trim replaced on the right hand side and the hole is now the correct side.

The drives side bracket does have to be fitted higher on this side due to the rear air-conditioning. I have the GXL but it also has the rear aircon.

Looks better now buy would be even better if it was the same both sides.
