    Re: D4D exhaust & chip

    Not at all Mike.
If anything it runs cooler because the hot exhaust gases are exiting a lot more efficiently.
I opted for the ceramic coated dump pipe which reduces heat greatly.
As far as ground clearance goes the beaudesert ex is tucked up quiet nicely.

    Cheers john

      Re: D4D exhaust & chip

Well time has come to make the move. Next week I am having a Safari snorkel, steinbauer chip and 3" exhaust upgrade. I am a bit annoyed at steinbauer as i sent them an email a couple of weeks ago to get some more info on thc chip - still waiting for a response. The reports here from Black Diamond match up with what the installer is telling me. My only concern is the impact this is all going to have on Mr Toyota the next time i have to get a service (routine or otherwise).

I drop the Prado off next tuesday and pick her up wednesday.I will keep y'all in the loop. What an awesome Christmas present for me and the Prado.

      cheers

Where did you email them? I sent an email to Hi Tech Disel Injection regarding the chip and they sent me back a heap of info about ten to fifteen minutes later last week.

I sent my email on the 30/11/10. Did you get some good stuff? My email was to steinbauer direct not to Hi Tech though so i wonder if this has anything to do with it.

              Re: D4D exhaust & chip

The job has been done! The snorkel looks the goods and there is no real increase in wind noise. The Steinbauer chip is in. Wow what a difference. A lot smoother, the auto gear box doesn’t hunt around as much or do a big jump from 5th to 3rd going up hills. Oh yeah there is plenty of get up and go under the right foot (almost forgot ha ha).

The exhaust is the only real issue. It is bumping against the exhaust heat shield under the driver as well as hitting the cross member where it bends over the axle at the rear. The worst is the bumping on the exhaust heat shield as it appears to be at certain RPM and mostly as soon as you come to a complete stop (nothing under normal driving). This is probably more annoying to people in other cars (I just turn the radio up louder). It is booked in to be fixed in the New Year.

              Cheers

Hi All, Has anyone tried removing what I think is the cat converter on the D4D exhaust. It is the first cone shaped gadget down from the dump pipe off the turbo.
I have removed the big muffler and replaced it with a better flowing Redback muffler. I feel it made a bit of difference down low in taking off etc. I have a DP Chip fitted (4 years) great. I didn't find any extra noise with the muffler change and now wondering about changing the dump pipe down to first join. Has anyone had a go at it. I found the exhaust system on the D4D was pretty good and approx 2.5 inch +, so I didn't want to change it. Thanks and cheers Bill.

Does anyone monitor their EGT's on the manifold upstream from the turbo exhaust inlet? What is the normal (low and highs) operating temps for a EGT monitor located in this area?

Very useful thread with great info. I'm going to put a upgraded exhaust on asap and follow up with a snorkel soon after. I have the KD-FTV. Would you recommend the 2.75" or just go the full 3"?

The standard exhaust is good for a 4cyl diesel.

Hi there, are any of you guys still running the chips?? I spoke to my mate who is a mechanic at Toyota and he said that he has worked on a number of Prado's that have been chipped and they have buggered the motor. I don't have details as to what happened but he did not recommend them. Am interested to here if anyone has had any problems with chipping after 100,000kms or more.

We recommend against chips & tune ups.

The pistons are not up to it. There are a lot of operators learning about it.

Thanks mate, I squashed the idea and just settled on replacing the standard muffler with a hi flow, should be easier to get past the boss and get a bit more power and slightly better fuel economy.

Knowing what I know now, I would NOT install a chip to a D4D, BUT... I WOULD put in a 2.75" or 3" exhaust.

Standard exhaust pipe work with a straight through muffler is excellent bang for buck ($200-$250 installed). Quicker turbo spool without loss of bottom end torque.
