I have been searching for someone else with the same issue and you have nailed what I am experiencing.
I have the 3LTD (non D4D) with Automatic box.
It drives me insane, I hate rattles and vibrations.

I was thinking about having the injectors looked at, but may put that off for now as it is happening with petrol engines as well.

Quick update, the hi-flow muffler has not fixed the problem, so the exhaust doesn't appear to be the origin of this annoying vibration/shudder !

Not sure where to go from here, such an annoying turd of a problem !

Anyone else got a clue, it's a big list of stuff I've been through trying to fix this.

I did some research online and found this but for the GX 470:

        TSIB DL001-08 (2003–2008 LEXUS GX 470); DRIVELINE VIBRATION/DRONE BETWEEN 55 - 75 MPH
Customers of some 2003 – 2008 model year GX 470 vehicles may complain of a vibration/drone felt in the floorboard or seat when maintaining steady speeds between 55 and 75 mph.

        55 – 65 mph Vibration/Drone:
OP CODE DESCRIPTION TIME OFP T1 T2
        DL7003 Install Revised Dynamic Differential Damper 0.5 41196–60010 9B 99

        70 – 75 mph Vibration/Drone:
OP CODE DESCRIPTION TIME OFP T1 T2
DL7004 Install Transfer FR Drive Chain and
        Transfer Case Dynamic Damper

Possibly could be caused by one of these dynamic differential dampers?

Ok, can everyone report what dampers they have on the back of their transfer case ?? I have a single cylindrical shaped damper on the top of the back of the transfer case.

I have the same issue. V6 auto, it only happens between 90 and 100 klms when i hit a slight hill. If i drop down a gear it vanishes. ill check the dampers on my transfer case tonight. I'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem.
It's actually a very standard 03 GXL V6 Auto with Toyota Bullbar which has never seen dirt.
Wish list: 2 inch lift, A/T tyres, Dual battery set up, Safari Snorkle, ARB Bar with winch, lightforce spotties.

Welcome to pradopoint 05gxl. First thing to do is to put your location in your settings so we all know where you re from. Also you will find another area where you can put a signature which most people use to describe their model prado and modifications etc. Then go here and introduce yourself http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-Introductions

Whitey mines exactly the same, only the one damper at the top of the transfer case. Mine drives fine everywhere other than when in top gear at the 90-100klm mark under a slight load, if it drops back a gear it disappers. If it was a bent axle it would happen all the time, i may try greasing up all my universal joints and see what happens. Whatever it is, it's only a very slight shudder but its still very annoying.

Interesting thread. Just some thoughts I had while reading.
I'm no mechanic, be nice to isolate the noise to either the engine or the drive train at least.
Could try reaching the speed where the vibration starts, then knock it into neutral. If the vibration remains, that would point to drive train.
Or, try manually putting it into a different gear and achieve same speed to isolate whether it is engine speed related or road speed related.

Good point ToeEdge, in my case it only does it at a certain speed in top gear. Don't think it's an engine speed issue as it reaches the same rpm in each gear before getting to fourth and doesn't do it at all, if a change it back a gear it's fine. i Don't think putting it in neutral will matter as mine only starts as i start to load up the drive line. If i'm driving on a flat road with no hills i dont feel it. Sounding more and more like a uni or balancing issue somewhere.

                        Hey blokes,

The issue is definitely not related to the engine, as it happens in both petrols and diesels, and in autos and manual gearboxes.

It's definitely a balancing problem somewhere, I checked my unis, no problems there, tight as.

If the transfer issues reported in the Lexus are real, we've got big problems, as it means something is out of balance in our transfer cases, and it won't be fixed by simply putting in new bearing kits etc.

Chains were being replaced in the Lexus, I dunno if we'll have the exact same problem in our transfer case, but I'm thinking it's definitely a big and costly mechanical problem to fix in the transfer case, and that means we're all just gonna have to live with it, unless someone feels like droppin down their case and spending loads of bucks !

I haven't heard of any recalls for 120 transfer cases, and the Toyota mechanics I spoke to don't know anything.

Dunno where to go from here with this, except to say it annoys the hell outa me !

I have noticed mine does not do it when cold. I am wondering if it is related to the torque converter lock up clutch as it does not seem to lock up until it is warm. Some mitsubishi's have a similar vibration problem as seen here http://www.automatictransmission.com...p?NewsId=38412
Im not convinced it is a balance issue as it doesnt occur in other gears at same speeds and rpm.

                            vibrations V6 GXL Auto

I am having simillar problem of vibrations while driving and it has recently started.

My mechanic suggests that coil pack is causing the problem due to corrosion and therefore only five out of 6 cylinders were working. Also, one of the spark plugs were dead short.

After changing spark plugs problems has somewht gone. However, changing coil pack sounds the cure.

However as Whitey says it could be a bit costlier by 185 bucks a pop.

Has anybody really resolved this issue 99.9% if not 100% so far???

                            cheers

                              Hey ozbloke,

I also checked my coil packs, it was the very first thing I looked at. I didn't chase it hard enough, my plan was to borrow one of my cousins coil packs out of his 120, and replace mine one by one. Unfortunately I didn't do it, I just visually inspected each chamber, and couldn't see any discoloration on the chamber walls that would indicate shorting anywhere.

However, my feeling is that if it were a misfiring coilpack, you would feel it roughen up over the entire rev range.

Toyota (in Brisbane) have also informed me that the coilpacks very rarely fail, and are almost 'bulletproof'. I didn't believe the guy when he said this, but he showed me the import replacement history, and there has never been more than a handful of coilpacks in queensland...dunno if anyone else has had to replace a coilpack ??

I'm still very suss about the transfer case, but I have no idea what !

Anyone else had any luck chasing this problem recently ??

                                Whitey,

i posted at "tuff_prado" which is a mates account, before i started my own. I have had all the coils, plugs and leads changed. This fixed a very slight miss which occurred when under-load just above idle.

After the mechanics had the car for 2 weeks, it still has the fault, which seems to be getting progressively worse, what used to occur at 55 - 70kph in 5th gear, this is now moved from 60 - 80kph. I have been told that its possible that the torque converter could be causing this problem. Which apparently is $1000 to take it out, look at it, test it and re install it, its more if it needs to be replaced.

I have just been dropping the auto back into 4th driving around town, which suites me for now, but the problem is bothering me, so when funds permit ill get the torque converter replaced. I've then been told that if that doesn't fix the fault, then its a $6K transmission, That part bothers me.

I have had the entire drive line checked and everything is in fine shape. The car has only done 130,000kms, I know the original owner whom did the first 115,000kms, he wasn't much of a lead foot, and it wasn't use to tow heavy loads. It has a rather impeccable Toyota service history, which has everything detailed, but no mention of anything unusual regarding the transmission.

I guess i'm waiting for the problem to get worse, so it can be easier to diagnose, because i'm sick of people telling me it doesn't exist.

I have looked through the other threads on similar topics, but nothing that really sheds any light on the problem.

hope your having more luck, and as soon as i have a resolution, ill let you know,

                                cheers,
