  • Low 1000 rpm shudder/vibration

    Pradopointers,

Have searched through the driveline threads and haven't found a similar description of my problem....

In my 06 GXL 4l auto, I am getting a considerable low rpm shudder at around 1000-1100rpm, quite noticeable going up a slight incline at around 60km/h, and still noticeable on flat streets driving at 60km/h, so it's getting quite annoying driving around the city !

It feels similar to when you are driving a manual car in too high a gear uphill and the driveline starts to vibrate.

    My 05, also a 4l auto didn't do this.

There are a lot of potential causes here, wheel balance, harmonic balancer, broken engine/gearbox mounts, uni joint, dirty injectors etc etc.

Has anyone experienced a similar low rpm shudder/vibration to this and found an obvious cause ???

    Thanks for your input !

      Re: Low 1000 rpm shudder/vibration

Some of your suggestions could possibly be eliminated by driving at the set speed/engine rpm.

If you suspect speed, then try that speed in another gear & see if it happens then.

If you suspect rpm, then does it occur at the same rpm but in different gears...

It is possible that it is a resonance meaning that it has to be a set speed & a set rpm, but if that is the case perhaps that will assist in eliminating what it can't be.

Does it happen when the drivetrain changes from under engine power to being pushed by the car (uni-joints possible here). Does it modulate at all in this situation?

Does Turning the steering wheel make any difference?

      Just a few ideas....

        Re: Low 1000 rpm shudder/vibration

        Hey guys,

        Thanks for your replys !

After a bit more testing, I can feel the same shudder/vibration occurring when the car is in P or N.

I couldn't notice the shudder/vibration at any other speeds, only in D, when going 60-70km/h up a slight incline, it always kicked in around 1100rpm.

The shudder/vibration is considerably more noticeable when going up a hill, same applies if the car is in N or P while sitting on a hill.

Clearly, something is causing an imbalance in the engine if it is occurring while in N or P, which still leaves a lot of possibilities, engine mounts, injectors, spark plugs etc etc.

At lower or higher rpm than 1100, the shudder/vibration goes away. ...although I suspect at higher rpm it is masked, I can feel the vibration come on again when I drop off the accelerator from high rpm.

Any ideas from the pradopoint database ???

          Re: Low 1000 rpm shudder/vibration

          G'day everyone,

Today I changed my sparkplugs, and I noticed a big water stain underneath one of my coil packs. The plug was noticeably more dirty than the others, and there was a bit of stain on the end of the coil pack.

After cleaning it up, and putting in the new plugs, I believe the shudder/vibration I had is now gone. This shudder was like driving on 5 cylinders, clearly under load I was getting a misfire.

I also noticed an old white corrosion stain underneath the seal on another coil pack.

Obviously water getting in underneath the coil pack o-ring seal is a big problem. The o-ring itself also has a small pin hole in it which can let water through !

Clearly this is something to be very aware of for deep water crossings.

Even though I have a snorkel (and have not done anything deep, I just got the car), I will now be watching around the coil pack o-rings very carefully. Also, I noticed a lot of compression blow through on the top of one plug which hadn't been tightened enough - this could affect the coil pack, so beware of loose plugs !

I'm surprised that the seal was not made to a better spec, and I will be looking at water proofing this somehow ! ...the pin hole must be to relieve hot air pressure building up, so to hold this hot air pressure, the seal would need to be much better than an o-ring. This is in my mind a serious flaw in the water proofing of the V6.

Any suggestions for better waterproofing from anyone who has had a similar problem ?

...also, for everyones knowledge, apparently the coil packs are seriously bullet proof, they'd wanna be for 185 bucks a pop !

            Re: Low 1000 rpm shudder/vibration

            ...woops, posted too soon !

After putting in the new plugs, the vibration has just moved closer to 70km/h at around 1200rpm, where as before it was closer to 60km/h.

I found an 'engine misfire' thread in the engine-petrol-120 section, where Dobbo reported a similar problem starting at 1000rpm, and also occurring at idle sometimes.

Dobbo managed to fix the problem with new plugs, but new plugs haven't fixed my vibration/misfire.

...anybody got a clue on this one ???

              Whitey,

I don't suppose you have an answer for this problem??

I've got the exact same problem, the vehicle seems faultless otherwise, but I don't want to take it somewhere to hear they have no idea what the problem is.

If you could let me know that would be great,

              Cheers,

                Re: Low 1000 rpm shudder/vibration

                Hi all .
My prado 07 3LT turbo diesel 6 speed manual has the same slight shudder/vibration problem . I towed a 2 ton caravan for the first time on the weekend twice on different
occasions going up hill we could first fell the shudder then we smelt what seemed like hot iron/steel ( and no it was not clutch burning smell ) . So it seems traveling at about
80klms per hr in 6th gear all is good then when i put load on the engine going up hill something is overheating and very slight vibration is felt .

Has any one had this same problem with a manual .posting.php?mode=reply&f=10&t=8110#

                  Re: Low 1000 rpm shudder/vibration

                  Hey Tuff_Prado,

Unfortunately I have not found a solution to this very annoying problem. However, it is more of an annoyance than anything serious, I don't think anything is about to break !

Things I have checked so far.....

                  1. Air flow meter (mine was sparkling, gave it a clean anyway)
                  2. Fuel filter (was pretty dirty)
                  3. Sonicated my injectors (had 2 bad spray patterns)
                  4. New spark plugs
                  5. Put pacemaker extractors on
                  6. Flushed the automatic transmission oil (did smell a bit burnt after 96,000 km)
                  7. Checked over the exhaust for loose/bunched up rubber mounts etc.
                  8. Spoke to Toyota mechanics

I have done all of these things in my quest to track down this annoying shudder, and absolutely no difference so far, the shudder is still there.

I have had 2 Toyota mechanics in the car with me, and they have both felt the shudder/vibration. The Toyota mechanics think it is reminiscent of the "boom noise" that 90 series Prados suffer from, however, they were very clear to me that they have never heard of this problem for 120 series Prados, never !

My own mechanic reckons it's either the exhaust, or a distorted axle.

In my head, if it's an axle, I think you'd experience the shudder over the whole rpm range.

Can't see anything out of place on my exhaust (on the mountings), but I guess there could be a loose baffle inside that is shuddering ????

I'm at a loss, and it is driving me nuts, next on my list is to chuck in some hi-flow mufflers, not cause I'm chasing anymore horsepower, I just wanna get rid of the this damned horrible shudder, it always comes on at 1000-1200rpm, right in the 60-70 km/h range, when you go up a gradual incline, which is a hell of a lot of streets in Brisbane I can tell ya !

Any Pradopointers got a clue with this ?????

                        Hey again Mick,

Ok, found a single damper on the back of my transfer case, a black material (seems denser than standard rubber), about 50mm diameter, 30mm thick, bolted into a threaded post which sticks out from the back of the transfer case.

I notice that there are another 3 similar threaded posts for mounting more dampers, but no dampers on them !

Is there normally only a single damper ????

Can someone else get underneath and have a squiz and see how many dampers they have ????

                        Thanks !

                              Hey Dustin,

The extractors did nothing for the vibration. Tomorrow I'm fitting a hi-flow muffler, as I'm hoping it may be a loose baffle that's pinging around in the muffler.

I would point out to anyone interested in reading this thread, that this appears to be a common issue, it has now been reported by tuff_prado, Sam B, and STD 03l. I would also point out that Sam B has an 07 turbo diesel 6 spd manual, and both myself and STD 03l have an 06 and 07 auto V6 respectively.

As this low rpm shudder/vibration has appeared in both diesel and petrol, and manual and automatic gearboxes, this may help us track down the root cause of this bloody annoying vibration. I think we can rule out the gearbox, as it's both manual and auto cars doing it. Can't be engine related if both diesels and petrols are doin it.

This makes me suspicious it has to be driveline, exhaust or distorted axles/CV's.

I think if a CV was bent or somehow distorted, then you would feel this vibration across the entire rpm range.

After trawling through the 90 and 150 series threads for any info, there was some reports of loose uni joints in the 90 series threads that were causing vibrations, however, I have checked mine, and they are all nice and tight.

I'll let you know if the vibration goes away after fitting a hi-flow exhaust.

As I said above, I don't think anything is about to break on the car, but it would be bloody nice to get rid of this damned annoying low rpm shudder !
