  • Reading fuel gauge

I know this has probably been bashed around abit, but I'm gonna ask any way.
The gauge read 1/4 on 2nd tank, put 90lts in, gauge went to 3/4 on main, used 1/4 on main (so at this point it's on 1/2) then it switched to 2nd tank on full.
    Q. why is this so :?

    Re: Reading fuel gauge

The a last bit's right, when you empty one tank, the "90 litre" light will come on and the guage will go back to full, indicating you're down to one tank only.

On the first bit, if you were on 1/4 with the "90 litre" light on, technically you'd have 22 litres or so left. Putting 90 litres in should have brought it to a total fuel load of 110 litres or so, which should indicate about 60% full on your gauge, with "90 litre" light off. I can only summise that when it reads 1/4 on half tank, that there's actually more than 22 litres left in the tank. ( they somtimes calibrate like this as a safety margin ).

I don't pay to much credence to the accuracy of the guage at those levels, as soon as the 90 litre light comes on I try to fill up, ( treat it like a fuel warning light ) so in effect I always have a 90 litre reserve. Not always possible on long remote runs, but a good policy to follow in general.
    Cheers, Wayne

      Re: Reading fuel gauge

      Hi,

This would be correct, as you know both fuel tanks are connected to the one filler.
The fuel can enter either tank or both when filling.

In your case it seems most has gone into the main for some reason.

When you have driven the car the transfer pump has moved the fuel from one tank to other
hence one empties whilst the other fills.

      Cheers
