  • Has anyone fitted a 1.5m x 1.0m Rhino Rack?

I just came across a Rhino Rack, which measures 1.5m x 1.0m (internal). Has anyone fitted one these onto a 120 Series?

It would seem the rack is too short to have front/rear cross bars, which would probably only leave front/middle as middle/rear are maybe too close together.

I don't have Prado roof rails... Might be the best place to start...? What rails would be best with the Prado rails?

It's about 1400mm from front of the front to the back of the rear bars. I don't have a 1500 x 1010 but have a 180x1010 and it overhangs by about 200mm at each end

I have the 1500mm by 1010mm and it is well suited to the vechile. It has factory roof rails on it so I bought the clamps to suit the Rhino bars. It has 2 bars on it. Best thing I ever did considering the Prado's do not have much room in the back.

        Thanks for the replies guys.

Schaffer - The 1.5m rack is just a tad too short to reach from the front mount to the rear mount. Even though this is only about 1.4m, the sliding tie-down points don't go all the way to the ends of the rack, due to the black resin corners. It literally comes about 5cm short... Damn...

Cliffy - Good to hear you're happy with the rack. I have two options I guess... I can buy two Rhino cross bars with mounts and attach them to the front/middle mounting points and forget all about Prado rails. That's assuming they're far enough apart to support the tray properly. OR, I could buy the Prado rails and go the way you have. Would you happen to a have a picture of yours you could post?

Nice one Hutch! Great pics too - almost as if they'd been snapped by Photopia Creations... go figure...

As I've got no roof rails, I reckon I'll buy two Rhino Rack cross rails with fittings. I'll attach these front and middle on the Prado's roof and slap the tray in the middle of the cross rails.

                Thanks for your help!

That would work just fine, i have been working on my own issues, as i need more secure storage and have run out of room inside i have found a bag from rhino that fits the rack and is lockable, water and dust proof, problem solved!!

PS yes are two of my favorite Prado photo's.

Can you get into underground carparks with the empty Rhino rack on?

                      Deeptank,

Here are the distances between the 3 mounting points. Note that they are centre distances.

                      Front to mid - 852mm
                      Mid to rear - 484mm

So if you bought the front and mid bars, you would have just over 300mm overhang front and back.

Are you looking to buy the aerodynamic types of the commercial square bars? If you are after the square bars, Toyota sell the set of 3 for the same price as Rhino sells for a set of 2. Go figure!

I've had a look at those bags too, so would be good to hear what you think of it, if/when you get one. I'm still just about OK for interior space, albeit with all the space taken up bar the front seats, so effectively when I'm loaded up the Prado's a two seater!

Thanks for that Andrew - yep, the front/middle seems to be the go. I was looking at the brushed aluminium aero bars as I'm kind of concered about roof noise. Sure, once the rack is loaded it'll probably whistle and howl, but at least it might be a little quieter with the aero bar - as opposed to the square commercial. The difference might be more obvious when the rack's empty...

If I ever need a bigger rack, I can swap my 1.5m to a 1.8+m, get the third cross rail and go from there.

Righto, I'm off to order the rails. A bit of 'man-shopping'...

Hutch, just a word of advise if you are looking at one of the Rhino Weatherproof storage bags. Get some of those cheap foam mats to lay underneath the bag. We purchased a bag and took it on a two week trip through outback South Australia and a number of wholes had rubbed through. Other than that the bag is great. I can also confirm that it is water proof or at least diesel proof. We had a slight incident with a diesel spill when the lid for the jerry on the roof rattled loose and spilt about 1 litre over the edge of the bag. No liquid or smell passed into the items stored in the bag (clothes). I believe MSA have something simillar as well.

Righty ho - the rack's on a looking/feeling good. For an alloy number it seems pretty damn sturdy.

I went with two Rhino Aero bars in the end, mounted front and middle - plus the fitting kit to secure the slats down in every gap.

I am also quite impressed with how quiet it is! I've been up to 110km/h and I can't really hear much of a difference. I'm sure it'll suck a bit more of the go-juice, but yet to figure by how much.

                              Thumbs up over here.
