I didn’t take any photos of it when it was new but i guess everyone knows what a white GXL 120 series looks like. I did have the sovereign bar of my old Prado fitted at the time of change over as i was getting next to nothing for it in the trade.

then with still less than 300kms on the clock out with the stock suspension and in with the OME lift kit, this was also removed from my trade-in and had only about done 5000kms.

A GME TX3400 UHF with remote head was next on the list, once again a change over from the old car. The main body of the unit is mounted under the passenger side seat attached to the vent under the carpet with an electrical zip tie and the remote head is in the usual place.

    Cheers Andrew

      Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

For some reason I could no longer see what I was typing so I will continue on in a new post.

The black widow drawers and the 39 litre eutectic fridge and slide were also from the old wagon, although the r/h rear side panel on the drawer system needed to be trimmed slightly as the new model has a fan for the three zone climate control in this corner and the plastic cover is a slightly different shape.

An ARB compressor was installed just behind the driver’s side headlight.

This is for pumping tyres etc, but more importantly it feeds the air lockers front and rear. the lockers improve off road capabilities like you would not believe, I took a mate for a drive (he has a 100 series) and even after we had driven up a steep rutted soft hill he still didn’t believe it was possible.

Four recovery points, 1 on each corner and a radiator protector plate made from 3mm alloy checker plate were soon added.

      Cheers Andrew

Removed the Grandtreks and fitted a set of BFG’s and wheel spacers machined from industrial nylon shaft, 50mm diam x 20mm thick.

A safari snorkel was added in quick succession

          Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

I extended the rear diff breather into the engine bay, i used 1/4" fuel hose and then made and Aluminium block and simply screwed the original diff breather into this. A couple of brass directors 1/8gas x 1/4", 2 worm clamps and a few electrical ties and the job was done.

An Anderson plug at the rear for the camper trailer (and the tip trailer I made a couple of years ago) as well I made my own hitch for the Treg coupling.

I had a set of spotties that I pulled of a HG Holden Ute i owned back in 1986 when I was err..... must have been about three years old, man that is a long time ago when you think about it. Anyway they have been gathering dust for nearly 25 years but i fitted them the other day and they work a treat. Also I made a bracket that bolts under the bar to one of the spotties and drilled a hole through the bar to fit my sand flag.

A fire extinguisher and first aid kit round of the car for now

I have heaps more to do and will update it as it happens. I have spent enough in the last six months to pay off the debt of a small African nation, so more paid work and less work on the Prado for a little while. I will start another post for the camper.

          Cheers Andrew

            Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

The only place to begin a new trailer is with the chassis, in this case the main rails are 50 x 50 x 3mm RHS and the cross rails 50 x 50 x 2.5mm with the draw bar being 100 x 50 x 3mm.

Then a trip to the local engineering works to borrow his folder and guillotine, note the creases in the side for extra strength, the main tub and the mudguards are 1.6mm and most of the rest 1.2mm.

I picked up a couple of wheels that looked like they should go nicely with the Prado. They are speedy wheels (Grande II's) and are exactly the same as the Prado wheels except for the centre cap and they are taper seat not parallel shank. And a new set of BFG's the same as on the Prado.

            [

This compartment is for the battery which powers the inside light, the power outlet on the back of the trailer and the water pump (mounted in same compartment).

I reckon easy access to everything in the trailer is important, so everything slides out the back and this photo shows the bearings for the slide system and kitchen, more photos of that later.

            Cheers Andrew

              Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

Well I am back again, not being able to see what you are typing once your post gets a bit longer is a real PITA.

Anyway about this point I got a bit slack taking photos so I don’t have any of the tent base being made, the 100ltr Aluminium water tank I made that mounts under the rear of the trailer and a few other bits and pieces. I should mention that the springs are 8 leaf x 65mm rebound off-road springs by industrial springs, and the axle is 45mm square with B type (ford) bearings and mechanical override brakes. The coupling is a Treg style although made by Trigg Bros.

Worse than my computer skills are my skills with a sewing machine so off to the local upholsterer to knock up the tent, cover, and stone guard.

Inside the tent we have an inner spring mattress that runs east west, that is across the trailer so it is accessed from the end and no climbing over your partner is required. This means that the mattress is in two pieces with the last 300mm where your feet go being removable, so that end of the base along with ladder folds up and over and the trailer is only 1900mm wide at its widest point (the cover)

Here is a picture of the kitchen unit and the storage boxes that just roll out the back.

the kitchen unit can be used and is fairly solid at full extension but a set off fold down legs help to keep it level and solid when set up to camp. When stopping for lunch and smoko it literally takes 20 seconds and the kitchen is ready for use

As you can see the draw bar is long enough to allow the Prado rear door to be opened even if on a bit of an angle.

Well that will do me for now, I will add more as it happens

              Cheers Andrew

Thanks for the tip D4D I will check it out, but to be honest i need something else to do in my spare time like a hole in the head, PP seems to be addictive and is chewing up lots of time.

Thanks ntpryce, I know I said I’ve got to stop spending money but the car is hopefully going in to get a Hilux bonnet scoop fitted this week, ill post some pictures, then I’ll stop spending money. Maybe!

Good to see projects like this come to fruition, silences the doubters (wives).
Especially like the Treg type hitch idea, I have thought why they do not manufacture a one piece receiver for this type of hitch.

Especially like the Treg type hitch idea
                          ]

Yeah with the rounded end on the standard Toyota tongue I reckon there is too great a risk that the bolt on hitch could move from side to side and come loose.

Will want to have a closer look at the custom camper you have made.
I will try and post some more photos, maybe we might catch up on a PP trip at some stage and you can have a real close look.

Well here is the latest Mod on the Prado, a Hilux Bonnet scoop.
I had it done last week but wasn't happy with the finish, it is simply bolted on same as the Hilux, but the bonnet is a slightly different curve and it didn't sit down quite flush. It went back in today to have a rubber seal fitted between the scoop and the bonnet, it looks really schmick now, if you didn't know any better you would think it was a standard Prado Scoop.

Hopefully will make a start on the sliders in the next week or so, will post pictures when I get started

                            Cheers Andrew.
