GIven the movement of the ARB bar, I'll be interested to see how the mounts to the sliders survive. I understand this is why ARB mount their 150 rails to the chassis. Oh that and side impact compliance.

I believe Andrew's side steps are mounted to the chassis as well as the bar so there should be no movement. The "movement of the ARB bar" is only the body moving in difference to the chassis.

Yup sorry bad description, there is movement in the chassis also. From what I have read on other vehicles with full rails it stiffens the chassis/ride hence may cause fatigue at the weakest point. I doubt it as Andrew know's what he is doing but it is something to look out for.

Yep like all DIY mods there are no gaurantees, only time will tell the whole story. Where the rail attaches to the slider i have actually fitted rubber insertion in the joint, this has the dual purpose of giving a little flex in the joint and helping to protect the powder coating on the sliders from any movement.

A couple of pages back D4D you also wondered whether my mod to attach the inner gaurd to the bullbar would cause it to crack. While i haven't done a heap of k's yet, it has already outlasted the ARB recommended cable tie method which started to fail after a week.

Anyway the scrub bars survived the drive from the shed to the carport with absolutely no problems at all  should put about 5000 on the clock in the next 5-6 weeks so that will be a reasonable test.

          Cheers Andrew

It's sort of a mod, got some new personalised plates yesterday. Went through a lot of options, and dropped most because of the expense with South Australia,s plate laws that mean anything that isn't letters followed by numbers costs from $200 per year, where as these are $180 once only. 4WDNOZ was my prefered option but couldn't justify $200 every year.

As our Prado is not our daily drive and is used almost exclusivly for travelling it seemed appropriate.

One slight mod to the plates is that i am in the habit of attaching an aluminium plate to the back of the front plate with silicon to stop it coming adrift on water crossings.

              Cheers Andrew

Correct Glad someone could work it out, I didn't think it was too hard. It should be a good ice breaker to start a conversation with fellow travellers.

                    • I have fitted one of Digoptions new AVN11TP GPS units. After a false start a couple of weeks ago when the first fitting attempt failed due to a faulty wiring loom (unit powered up even with no keys in the ignition, but then nothing else worked). Matt sent a new wiring loom and all seems to be working now. Just gotta wrap my brain around how it all works.

I have since removed this GPS unit, it was total crap, worst money I ever spent with my build up, do yourself a favour and don't buy one of these Dodgy Options units unless you want to buy hassles and headaches.

I also drilled a decent size hole in the side of the glove box to allow for the Ipod cable and the USB cable to sit in the glove box.

While i had the glove box out i took the opportunity to check the cabin filter, yep it surely needed a good clean.

I still have my reverse camera to mount, still tossing up a few options as to where best to mount it.

After having had this unit for a while now I have come to the conclusion that it is a piece of junk, I have had no end of trouble and am yet to have the unit actually work the way it should. I guess when you buy something cheap you get what you pay for.

                      Cheers Andrew

                      • well done again andrew. knew you'd knock over the install o.k. my wife flipped when she saw the huge hole in the dash when i put mine in but thankfully it all went back together, eventually..
with my camera in the numberplate bracke i can just see lhs, across to the hitch and ball and the lower part of the spare so a good broad view.
                        Cheers

                        • Reverse camera is fitted pictures a bit later for that. In the mean time the paint has dried on another little project to help organise the centre consol a bit better.
Just a few (3) lift out trays for the centre consol to keep things a bit more organised, we put so many bits and pieces in there it usally ends up a total mess in no time at all. Now the mess should be a bit more organised.

Also since i have changed bullbars i haven't redone my sand flag mount, due to the upcoming Border Track trip i thought i should get that sorted. I decided that higher is better so i made a mount to fit in the corner of the rhino rack, Its not in the picture, but my shower tank fits in front of it so it wont interfere in any way with storage up top.

                          Cheers Andrew

                            • The combination of 'DIY' mods and top quality off the shelf products used make this rig definitely up there as one of my favs. I use the quotations marks around DIY because these mods hardly fit into the typical DIY category - they put major companies to shame! I expect to be doing some serious checking out of others rigs myself at the GTG. It all gets a bit hazy but i am pretty sure i settled on my roof bar and rhino rack set up after looking at your build up Stewy.

Don't worry Madkore, still got numerous custom projects floating around in my mind, (and a couple floating around the shed) so there will be a few to come before i finish.
