Can anyone tell me what the recommended intervals for oil changes for gearbox, transfer case and diffs for a petrol Prado are?

    Hi appro:
Front and rear diff oils change 40,000km intervals, manual transmission and transfer case oils are inspected at 40,000km by the Toyota service schedule section 2-7, however I change my manual transmission and transfer case oils at 40,000km intervals or after a fair bit of water crossing as required by the "additional service schedule" in section 2-50 of the Toyota service schedule. I recently did all of the above at 30,000kms as had just completed a big trip.
The bottom line is, it depends how you use your truck, for extreme conditions and heavy towing Toyota recommend you follow the "additional service schedule" which requires both diff oils to be changed at 40,000kms intervals with the first change at 20,000kms.
    Hope this helps a little

Thanks Clifton. Seeing as I don't know what has been done up until now, I think I'll just get the lot changed. The gearbox has a bit of a whine, expecially in fourth when I accelerate at around 60kph. It isn't major though. Are there any options for the gearbox oil to quieten it down or should I just follow the Toyota recommendation?

        Hi appro,
Use gear oil that meets or exceeds API GL-5 there are many additives often being thrown around the market to quieten transmissions and diffs, just stick to a decent quality gear oil, and be wary of anyone offering additives for diffs your rear diff is an LSD, these slick additives stop the correct operation of the clutches in your LSD (it makes them slip when they should be engaged).

HI ALL.Just did 80k service on mine ,they told me to use LS diff oil front and rear and only good quality oil.The auto was a different story there, all about to change this as per service book, told by toyota it used WS oil therfore it did not need changing unless it had been driven hard.I wont be but he told me to look at changing it at 150k.He tells me he gets a few jobs from machanics who have dropped the oil and can,t figure out how to put it back in (some special gear required)don,t know about that one it was toyota service I was talking to.All I know is I won,t be waiting till 150k.Has anyone heard of this :?: CHEERS TINKERA.

I believe as apparently the auto fluid is not ment to be changed you need like a yabbi pump type contraption to put it back in as the fill point is not acessable. However i could be wrong

There's two plugs on the transmission pan. The lower one is the drain and the higher one (in an indent on the pan) is the filler.

The fluid can be filled using a drum pump.

I'm not sure on how you'd go about flushing the transmission the old fashion way by pulling the radiator oil cooler return hose as you'd be running the transmission sump dry then topping.

The only way I can see to do it without running try is to drain, refill, circulate fluid, then do it all again until the old fluid is purged enough times with new fluid. It would be easier just to change the fluid frequently to ensure it stays clean.

Toyota service intervals are to inspect auto fluid every 40,000km and replace (if necessary) every 80,000km. Manual transmission oil and Transfer oil have similar inspection and replacement schedules, diff oil is inspected every 20,000km and replaced every 40,000km. Toyota also specifies replacement of auto fluid, gear oil, transfer oil and diff oil if the vehicle is used for towing.

                      Re: Transmission Oil Change Intervals?

The cost of the oil is minimal compared to repairs, so change all every 40,000 k's

148,000 and still going strong, will have them all again with the 150k timing belt replacement. Was advised to have the tensioner replaced as well as they won't last to 300,000 k's. Only a few $$$ more to have done at the same time, and saves $$$ having to have it replaced when it it stuffed and maybee causing a bit of damage as well.

definitly definitly definitly change the tensioner when you do the timing belt.

Why it is only reccomended and not manditory is beyond me

Goes fine and I am happy I asked my dealer to change my trans oil today.

Then they ignored me and told me it was not required... THEN I REMINDED THEM IT IS MY BLOODY CAR AND JUST DO IT :!:

About 40 bucks for oil and half an hour extra labour, on top of my service cost... it is changed

                            Re: Transmission Oil Change Intervals?

How many litres of oil did they use as per the invoice?

I was told by my dealer that they don't flush the transmission but drop the fluid in the sump, refill and correct the fluid level.

I'm not sure how they'd deal with a gearbox that had burnt fluid. They might just to the sump dump twice while driving the car a few Km between changes. This will just dilute the old fluid with new fluid and not replace all of the burnt fluid.
