Well, MUMSRIG just joined this illustrious club...

Tam sent me a txt whilst at work yesterday "I think my car has an oil leak". My reply was for her to send me a picture via SMS... I get a pic of a black bash plate with oil dripping off.?? No idea what it was LOL

Asked for more pics, got a pic of a big pool of oil on the garage floor LOL again...

Finally got a pic looking at the driveshaft and could see the fuel tank behind so I took a punt and ordered the front pinion seal for the tranfer case... Got home that evening and low and behold my guess was correct! Picked up the seal this morning and some new oil and no more leakage....

No warning with this one, it just started leaking and left about 500mls on the garage floor! Mind you, it had to happen on my shiftchange day when I was supposed to be getting MUMSRIG ready for the 4X4 show on the weekend.

Still managed to high pressure clean the car and delete any trace of last weekends fun, plus refit the sliders and watch the kids whilst Tam went to the movies...

I reakon its worth keeping at least one of these seals in my stock of parts, its an easy job and if left for to long would kill the car pretty quick.

True. There is only 1.4ltrs of oil in there. Won't take long to loose all of that!

          Hey Mitch,
Mine is leaking as well, Booked it in tomorrow to get it replaced .Leaks from transfer case to front diff.Do you know if this is the same seal as the one that goes between the transfer case and the rear diff?
I bought the seal but may have bought the wrong one.
          $25.60 seal type 90311-41007.
I think it was from mud and the hose or that water crossing.?
They are charging me $110 for labor at the local transmission place if I supply the part.

Looking at the schematic they are different part numbers, I have just done mine, but already thrown away the packet, I bought part numbers 36111B and 33309D.

                Help!

I've begun the process of replacing my front seal. Got the nuts off the universal joint with a bit of effort, but now I can't get the driveshaft off the bolts on the flange (part no 33309B in the diagram above) . There's always one bolt that's not clear to drop the thing down to expose the nut holding the seal in place.

Is there a trick to it? I have the front wheels only off the ground, centre diff in neutral and the auto tranny in neutral as well. I can spin either front wheel by hand, but the driveshaft doesn't move much other than the inherent slop that seems to be present. It seems to be "compressed" to the maximum by the wear marks on the end of the smaller shaft into the larger housing so I don't know if it will go any further.

Any clues as to what I might try next would be mucho appreciated.

                Cheers,

                Dave

Mate I did mine with wheels on the ground, have you removed the studs from the flange and not just the nuts?
If you havent, screw the nuts on a little way and give them a few bashes with a hammer to removed the studs, once you have all 4 off the drive shaft should be real easy to remove.
When you put the studs back in they will pull themselves back through whe you tighten the nuts.

                  Hope that helps.

Thanks Andrew I reckon that will do the trick, I am leaving the studs in place at present!

                        Andrew,

Yes, thanks all good (I think). It's amazing how simple the task is when you go about it the right way

It might be my imagination but I reckon there's still a slight sign of oil around the seal, after I cleaned it all up with CT18 and a good wash following reassembly. To my eye there was just the slightest scoring on the flange due to the amount of sand I found there when I finally got it off.

I'll put some cardboard under it for the next couple of nights and see if there's any drip (apart from the one behind the wheel).

Thanks once again for your help.

                        Dave

Genuine parts . All make and models.

It cost me $15 for the genuine part. Which had been superseded twice since manufacture?

This place has everything and is far cheaper than Toyota.
