Guys, what's the trick with the flange nut???!!! I have centre punched the nut out, but cannot get it to start turning loose. I have padlocked a bit of chain from one of the flange holes and secured to the chassis, and hung off that nut with a breaker bar and still can't get it to budge! Feels like I'm going to break the gearbox mounts before I get that nut to come loose.

    Any advice appreciated.

      Hey Simo

I used a Rattle Gun on mine, I didnt even have to warry about the punched in section.

Just make sure you mark the location that its in so to do it back up to the same spot.

Well isn't this a handy thread! Just finished up checking over the rig this morning and noticed oil sprayed all under the car right back to the rear diff! Tracked it back to the transfer case and believe its the same seal. Lucky for me I'm done with 4wd side of the trip and will take the sealed road section home. Will let you know how I go with the fix next week.

After a bit of too and fro with the Toyota parts guy up here I finally obtained the seal and nut. Its to be noted the front seal changed design on the 07/08 builds so ensure you have your correct build date handy if doing this at home. Had a bit of a struggle with the drive shaft bolts but all in all was a pretty straight forward fix. It would have been allot better if I could have done this on ramps or a hoist so my main drama was being on my back during the whole thing. The cross member also gets in the way but once you learn to negotiate how to get the drive shaft off and have a few torched handy to get some light on the situation its a couple hour job in the above conditions. The first test drive has shown no signs of leaking so fingers crossed its done the job. It was noted my old seal had perished somewhat in one particular spot, almost like the rubber had started to wear away and become thin? Anyhow take the tips in the above posts and have a look at the link to the 90 series thread as it reassures you your on the right track.

          Cheers,

I got a cracked transfer case at the filler plug thanks to an over zealous toyota service brat. Didn't notice it until Dubbo zoo when i was sorting out my stuffed jet pump problems. Crawled under the car at the van park and noticed oil from the transfer back and thought it was the shaft seal. Then when checking the oil level (always looks like you used the whole case full when it's only a few ml's of it) i noticed the crack.
When we got back home from our holidays, cleaned it all up and thank goodness for JB Weld. Hasn't leaked a drop yet in 20,000k's. Gotta love that service.

Picked up the car from Toyota yesterday from having an oil leak from the transfer case. Toyoya Extended Warranty has picked up the bill for this one. If only I could extend that warranty for another 3 years I'd proberbly think about keeping it

Sorry for bringing up the old thread. mine weeps at the rear output. Ordered the 90311-41007. Removed the rear t/shaft and companion flange. Noticed a seal inside the flange as well but it was dry. Went to replace the seal in the extension housing and it looks nothing like the Toyota supplied part ? Original seal is larger both ID and OD and has an outside lip as well. One from Toyota is marked 38 58 and is flat ???
Can someone confirm 90311-41007 has a large external lip on it facing outwards (similar seal as the front diff to CV seals)?

I cant be positive about the rear seal but did you give them your VIN No., year etc when buying the part? When I did my front seal there were two versions of the seals depending on the year. May also be the case with the rear too.

Mystery solved, I ordered the same seal yesterday and it arrived this morning and BINGO, it is the correct seal. I returned the other seal, someone at the packing plant put the wrong seal into the packet........

Well here I am resurrecting an old thread. After installing my new ARB bash plates and transfer case guard I found my transfer case has a leak at the front drive shaft

so did a search and found this thread. I figured if I have to drain all the oil out I may as well replace the rear seal while i'm at it.
called toyota, gave them my VIN (December 2008 Build) and they sent me the below diagram

So I will pickup the following seals and give it a crack
                      36111b ($21.69)
                      36115c ($40.08)

                        Hey!

I'm in this process, but can't get the center 30mm nut off (front flange on the transfer case). Car is on the ground, locked center diff, breaker bar + 2ton lift, impact wrench, but nothing, the nut won't move. I'm afraid I'm going to break something inside the transfer case if I try harder..

                        Any ideas?

                        Cheers

I think there is a locking nut there? My workshop manual says to use a small centre punch, dislodge the staked portion of the locking nut.

Thanks for the reply! If only it was this easy... Ofcourse I've dislodged the staked part of the nut The problem is that it still doesn't want to break free!

Finally it came off.. I've fabricated a tool that holded the flange against the frame, and with an 1/2" ~40cm torque wrench + 2T lift it gave. Now to get the flange off without a puller.. Everyone writes it comes of easily, but mine ofcourse won't move..

It appears the seal is now $50 (price from 2 dealers - non trade price)!
