At some point in mid 2008 Toyota started fitting different injectors to D4D Prados off the top of my head I thought this was August but it could have been April. But my point was to to question whether the advertised "new" injectors in the 150 are different again to the late 120 D4Ds or if it is just advertising spin. Toyota didn't really advertise the change to the injectors in the late 120s (that of course would have been admitting there was a problem) so I am wondering if they are advertising it now to try and set the 150 appart.

My Prado was in for a service yesterday so I asked the service manager what he knew of the new injectors in the 150 and his response was that he was not aware of any difference between the late 120 injectors and the 150 injectors.

Does anyone have a definative answer, based on part numbers etc. rather than sales talk?

Your point is valid and I think you are correct in your assumptions.

I was only concerned at the date as I own an April 08 D4D, so have a personal interest in the changeover date.

        Re: 120 D4D vs 150 D4D Engine

Okay just to clear this question up about the D4-D Injectors I ask a contact directly about this and here is his reply:

"Hey mate, spoke to my head mechanic who said the injectors are completely different to the 120 Prado.
The nozzles are different, the material is different and they are not compatable with the 120. Also the mapping of the ECU is completely different between the two models."

So I hope that helps in this discussion.

        Cheers

I guess a part reference number from Toyota might also confirm the situation.

I like the 1kz as well. Just wish the auto had 5 positions, not 4. If SWMBO can be convinced I'll do the exhaust but she's just not keen and already sees the expense on the rig as way to much.

                    Re: 120 D4D vs 150 D4D Engine

Sept 07 D4D here as well and I'm almost certain I'd have gotten the crappy injectors. I'd also heard the 150 had newly designed injectors, I'd say most certainly due to the issues Toyota continue to deny with the 07 era injectors. Toyota need to recall vehicles with the bad injectors, simple as that. Anyhow, I too look at the new ones with interest. So far so good though with the old ones.
I could not agree more wqith that. Mine is oct 07 build with 30kms on it. Just bought it a couple of weeks back. No problems evident now, but since I do about 50k kms a year, we will soon see I guess.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

Just got my extended warranty on the Dec 06 GXL D4D ( one new set of injectors and a full rebuild so far ) so I am good until Jan 2013....

Hopefully the "new" V6 twin turbo diesel will be out by then and I can trade it in!!!

I'd agree the front mount will cool it better however wouldn't turbo lag increase due to the air having to travel further now?? can anyone (with a boostgauge) confirm this? ie difference when both 120 vs 150 hit full boost? Are they the same turbos?

It would be something to check before the spotties and bull bars go on. Once these are on...spotties this will reduce the amount direct air to the intercooler which is not ideal IMHO

                            Re: 120 D4D vs 150 D4D Engine

Fuel economy is great on the 150. In a recent trip the 150 got 9.2 l/100ks and the 120 got 12l/100ks (both diesel autos). Mixed highway, dirt, creek crossings. About 500km trip. I put the better fuel economy down to a few things:
                            (1) drag coefficient - they skimped on the 150's mud flaps and the front door and rear guard get very dirty, wont take long to strip the paint work
                            (2) automatic transmission in the 150 holds the gear at lower speeds and seems to keep the revs down to about 2200rpm whilst accelerating
                            (3) by the above posts it appears they have worked the ECU and injectors but I cannot comment on these

I dont think the small fuel tank has much to do with it as we both refuelled prior to the trip and I had an extra adult with more weight in the boot. Just dont know how I got it all into the boot with the dickie seats under the floor.

Overall the fuel economy is exceptional on the 150. Way to go!!!

                            Nifty...

Just a thought. What happens to improved cooling efficiency from a front-mounted intercooler when negotiating a wide (and deep) water crossing?

The water would be cooler than the air flowing over it so it would work better :?: on a hot summers day anyway.
