GXL Rear Cargo Area Power Point ?

    PPr's,

Just after some advice on using the powerpoint in the rear of our 2010 GXL....We're off to the Cape in a few weeks and will need to take our laptop with us for a number of reasons...Has anyone used the socket to charge their laptop, or similar 'sensitive' electrical device, OR would it be too 'risky' to use in event of spike or surges??

I understand it will only charge whilst driving, and that's ok given the distances...

As an alternative, I have 12v points fitted also in the rear....Would I be better off buying a more 'reputable' inverter that could safely charge sensitive electronics??

Or....discard the inverter idea and run with a simple 12v laptop supply from Jaycar and alike?

Appreciate advice from anyone running either of these options....

Hi Colmano my old man tried charging his laptop via an inverter thru the 12v in dash and would not work properly until he upgraded the cable size to the outlet. Oe cable is tiny , less than 1mm2 I think . the outlet in the back is same cable but longer run which would be worse. i can't comment on jaycar as I haven't seen them
      Cheers matt

I've got a 2012 GXL TD, I have charged my 13" Macbook without issue many times, takes about 2 hours from 0%. I have also used it to power a small food processor/mixer. Only issue was when stopped and many people using the outlet for about 6 hours resulted in flat starter batt. Eventually I will move to aux.

So I've since noticed that on the back of my laptop power supply (HP Pavilion dv6) is says '120W'....Given the point in the back of the Prado is '100W', would I be correct in assuming it will not charge my laptop and will 'trip' the safety mechanism in the inverter ??

My Lenovo power pack is 65W and works fine off the back 240 plug. I try very hard not to take it with me but sometimes it's a necessity.

Colmano, I don't know for sure but I'd guess at 20W over rating it just wouldn't work but wouldn't trip anything.

The power supply will provide max of 120W. But what the laptop will draw can be less. Max power draw from the laptop could occur when all these things are happening: fan is running in warm conditions, the CPU is doing a processor intensive calculation, the screen is turned up to high brightness, wifi and bluetooth is on, doof-doof music is playing at full volume, a DVD is getting burnt in the drive, a full virus scan is running and the battery is being charged.

If you have an energy meter, you can check what the power consumption is when charging the laptop only with the laptop turned off. If it is safely under 100W, then it will be fine. However, using a proper sine wave inverter will be much better for sensitive electronics.

guys it's been suggested in this thread a couple of times now but has anyone actually replaced the inverter with a bigger/pure sine wave inverter ? is there room for this ?

thanks. expecting delivery of my new GXL next week and looking at this as a possible mod.

It's mounted on the wheel arch not far from the outlet, you need to remove the trim to get to it, I rewired mine to run off the 2nd battery from memory it's a fairly small unit, you might be able to fit a pure sine wave one in there but it would have to be a small one

                        Factory 240VAC outlet

I have notice that the factory 240VAC outlet is switched through the ignition. I was wanting to know it this could easily be disconnected and added to the dual battery system and be on 24/7 to run the fridge. Where is the inverted mounted etc?

What sized fridge are you thinking Kelby?...the 220v outlet really struggles to run a fridge of any size, its really only good enough to charge a phone or a laptop. Its only a 100 watt inverter, and I've had a look at the wiring behind the Ac outlet and and it is wired with really really thin auto cable, its also quite an inefficient way to run a fridge, especially when the car is off....12v from battery, into an inverted (with associated voltage drops and losses) and then into a fridge...you would find it would drain the battery very quickly when the engine wasn't running, and thats if it didn't blow a fuse when the fridge started up....if that makes sense.

                            Thanks brogers.
I am running a waeco 65l which the spec sheets says draws 65watts. It hold the temperature fine over night but I was just looking for another option.

When I picked up our prado, the dealer advised against using the 240v outlet for the same reason brogers posted hence the dual battery and dual ciggie outlets being fitted.
Fitted so far:-Toyota Alloy bar,Redarc BDCD1220 battery managment system and dual power outlet, tracklander full length rack and ladder,Milford cargo barrier,Kaon transmission guard, UVP& Lower Shock mount Guards,Dobinson/Bilstein suspension,Toyota Bonnet and headlight guards,39ltr engel and an opposite lock stubby holder (from the old '80' series),Polyair Airbags,Pradopoint sticker,Gonefishin' custom Sidesteps.
