  • Long Range Fuel Tanks

Brown Davis offer a Long Range fuel tank for the Prado extending it's capacity to around 260 lts. Has anyone on the forum installed one of these or can see any detriments ?? The tank apparently doesn't effect any departure angles, and uses currently 'unused' space. The only downfall I can see is the extra weight.

      Re: Long Range Fuel Tanks

      Hey JamesC,

      Email response from Brown Davis:

The tank we offer is to replace the rear tank, so the volume would be 170ltr + the remaining factory tank.
This tank retails for $1,106 supply only or $1,370 fully installed.
      Hope this helps.

Has anyone got one of these tanks from Brown Davis? Any issues? 260lts is nice, wouldn't have to carry a jerry to get from Dwn to Alice

There is plenty of fuel availailable on that stretch! You will be paying $1100 plus to have the chance to save a few cents a litre and will have a lot of extra weight hanging off the back all of the time. Hmmm

It's a lot more convenient not having to stop/worry though.

At the moment if I drive to Alice or similar from Darwin I need to a Jerry and similar from Adelaide to Alice. This needs to be carried in the vehicle itself. I am planning a big trip next year from Darwin to Broome, Perth, Adelaide and back to Darwin. I might be using a roof-top tent or hiring a camping trailer. If I don't use the trailer then the gear has to go in the back of the vehicle along with the fuel.

The pros I see with the long range tank are:
                1. Longer range of travel,
                2. Better chance of selecting a service station that has cheaper fuel,
                3. Better chance of selecting a service station that is a particular brand, I use a shell fuel card,
                4. Better chance of selecting a service station that has better quality fuel i.e. has high turn-around, less chance of picking up dirty fuel,
                5. I don't have to carry fuel inside the vehicle which is a safety issue, it stinks (diesel) and takes up room,
                6. Lower center of gravity having the fuel in the tank instead of in the vehicle or on the roof, and
                7. People cannot steal my fuel if its not on the roof.

                Cons:
                1. Cost of the tank.
                2. Convincing the wife
                3. Extra weight which is only minor. (I would only have to worry about the weight of the tank)

As you can see 404 there are other things to consider besides the cost of fuel,

issues i see is they replace the rear tank which puts all the weight behind the rear wheels not ideal. The actual weight of those tanks themselves isn't that much but its the extra fuel load that it'll carry.

but 260L would be nice and at $1100 its too bad a price.

And a note on bad fuels or ethanol fuels, we had a new FJ cruiser come into work for a fuel issue, wouldn't pump from aux tank to main. It had a bad batch of fuel which had deteriorated the insides of the fuel lines and clog the system, all fuels had to be replaced, both tanks flushed, new filters and injectors flushed. We suspect he used an ethanol based fuel, even tho toyota say its E10 suitable

""We suspect he used an ethanol based fuel, even tho toyota say its E10 suitable "" wouldn't touch that shit, don't care how cheap it gets. Mind you only ever see it maybe up to 4c a litre cheaper, big deal, spend more then that in Woolworths then Aldi if you want to save a $$. I have never used it in any of the cars only once the wife did and in her buz box we lost over 50k from the tank so why would you use it, there are also some PP members on here who have tried it and say their economy was worse. Bloody bullshit the government talk..........Cheers Steve

$260 for fitting seems very reasonable. Its about convenience really, theres not many places you cant get between with the standard tanks. So its just a 'nice to have' item IMO

ethanol based fuels are ok, only if your system is capable of using it and has been tuned to use it, with bigger injectors but still won't see more kms per tank as you have to use more fuel to get same power

Extra weight behind the rear wheels is no different than towing with a tow-ball weight of 80 or so kgs. So I don't see this as an issue or having heavy items in the cargo space. Or having a rear bar to carry two wheels on etc etc. Food for thought.

Your Shell card will be useless at many servos in WA, especially the Eagle distributors who only accept an Eagle card or a credit card. And the number of Shells across the Nullabor, er............none.
