Got a couple of noisy tappets in my 1KZTE motor, looking at the manual it looks a involved job, Has any body done the job, how long to check them all and how easy is it once you have taken every thing off?
    Thanks in advance

    Regards

    Re: Adjusting Tappets

Checking them is straight forward enough, it's if they are out of spec that it gets more involved as they are a bucket and shim set up and you need to add or subtract shims as required.

The 1kz is normally pretty solid is this department and I've seen a couple now around the 200k km mark that had never needed tappets done and were still within spec.

Please explain the add or subtract bit as there is only 1 shim per valve & it is replaced with a shim of the correct thickness to achieve the correct clearance

Normally the valve clearance get tighter not looser as well so are you sure you have a couple of loose ones (have you removed the rocker cover & checked them)

        Re: Adjusting Tappets

Checking them is fairly straight forward. Once you remove intercooler, hoses/pipes, etc, rocker cover comes off easy as. Make sure you plug up both holes in and out of turbo to avoid droping any thing in.
If the clearances are out, write down all the actual gap radings between cam and shim. You really need a TOYOTA special service tool (as i do) for compressing the shim bucket so you can remove the shim. Then its as easy as using a micrometer to measure the shim and then replacing with a thicker or thiner one as required. With the shim thicknesses there is a difference of .05mm between each size. If you are going to tackle this at home and you have the right tool make sure you have a good selection of shims. Give us a yell if you need any other info as i have done this job may times having worked at a TOYOTA dealership.

        Good luck

I can hear a noise from the motor that matches the revs, in my old petrol motors it was the tappets, but am open to any suggestions as the job sounds topo much for me (no micrometer or spring tool)
I havent touched the rocker cover atm, But will look at it next w/e to check

You are right, I didn't explain too well as I tried to be brief and compress my answer into one sentence. There is only one shim per valve and you have to add or subtract to it's measurement to obtain the correct measurement of the new shim.

( New shim = measurement of the old shim plus (measured valve clearance take the specified clearance)

            Specs are:
            (Intake = 0.2 - 0.3mm)
            (Exhaust = 0.25 - 0.35mm)

            They are done COLD.

I wouldn't buy any shims up front before checking the clearance. They are pricey (over $10 each) and there are 17 sizes to choose from so it will be expensive to have a range at hand "Just in case" Better you check them and only get what you need.

I'd check them first, you only need basic hand tools and some feeler gauges.
If you are in Adelaide I can give you a hand. (Location in profile please  )
I wouldn't be comparing the noises to a petrol engine, the 1kz, being a precombustion diesel, is quite a top end rattler.

                Re: Adjusting Tappets

The problem with doing them yourself without a selection of shims available is you need to remove the shims to measure what is in there (or look at the marking on them if it is still legible) & than order what you need (meaning you cant finish the job at the same time)

Sometimes you can swap them between cylinders to get the correct clearances as well so look at what you need & what you already have that wont be reused & than order what is needed from the dealer

In the factory workshop manual it shows 2 tools, one to depress the lifter & a second to pick the shim out of the lifter but the easist way to pick the shim out (if you have a compressor available) is to put a rag over the lifter area (to catch the mess) puff a bit of air where the shim sits in the lifter with a air nozzle) & the shim will lift up & than pick it out with a magnetic pickup tool

                Regards Don
