    Re: Prado ARB Air Locker?

Has anyone run a detroit locker in the rear of there Prado and a true trac (which is a LSD) in the front?
This combo is popular with Land Rovers, which have constant 4wd.
Great prices from the US http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/ca ... a-8-1.html

        Re: Prado ARB Air Locker?

Hi, I just had front and rear lockers fitted a month or so ago, they are absolutely fantastic, places that were impossible before i now just walk up. Interestingly the guy who fitted mine (he is an ARB authorised installer in country SA) told me that you must never run the front locker on its own but you can run the rear on its own and he wired them so that the front cant be switched on on its own. Not sure why. My mate who also has a 120 just had the rear fitted but i havent heard if he has used it yet, he went that way on ARB recomendation. Also the rear is a lot easier and therefore cheaper to install.

        Cheers Andrew

          Re: Prado ARB Air Locker?

After many delays, my RD90 is being fitted to the front diff on the 8th of Jan. So I will report back then. Getting the diff out was pretty easy. Putting all new bearings and seals in at the same time just made sense although I don't think that they were really needed. As it's a UK model, it comes with a rear locker as standard. I got the rotary switch out of an 80 series so I can switch the lockers in progressively. It would be handy to be able to have the front and rear locked with the centre open, I suppose, just to allow the torque to go somewhere if it needs to. I shattered my rear diff going up some vertical steps. The locker was in and when the front wheels landed, the load was all transferred through the rears which had all the weight on them. The ring and pinion were destroyed. With the front locker fitted, I think that the technique will be to simply crawl up rather than attack at ramming speed. I was being a bit ambitious with a rear diff that had done a lot of miles and the preload must have been greater than it should. I got up a couple of times and then -- oops.

KZJ90 front and rear winches, Safari Snorkel, 40mm OME lift, 40mm Body lift, BFG MT, 1000w Inverter, 0n-board air, drawer system, X-Lites, triple battery, triple lockers, steel bumpers, custom sliders, rack off an old van.

            Re: Prado ARB Air Locker?

i got my locker fitted in the rear with the upgraded compressor, very happy with the install and decision was easy to put it in the rear as i was sick of adjusting the hand brake up because of the shit lsd, flick the switch and off ya go, as for a front locker im not going to worry, if i get stuck with rear locker on and 15 psi in the tyres i might as well get out and drag the cable out to recover myself. besides i have found a new necessity i need, some more Kw in a dp chip or a similar. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

              Re: Prado ARB Air Locker?

Well, got the chance to really try out my front locker today. Woke to 3" of snow and an off road day in an old quarry. Lots of very varied hazards to play on. Truth is that fitting the front locker gives nowhere as much advantage as the rear. I would estimate that it adds about a third or even less than the rear, if you follow me. When you are stuck and you lock the rear, you are generally on the move again. When you get stuck with that in and then put the front in too, it's not a staggering difference. I guess I knew this before, but wanted one, so that's that. Fitting a rear winch came in very handy though! New front winch bumper worked very well too. Didn't break anything today, so that has to be good. So, if you have more money than sense, spend it on a front locker. If you have more sense than money, fit a really good winch. Or, if you have a rear LSD, fit a proper locker. Still dunno why UK spec comes with electric locker and most other countries get and LSD.

Would like to get some 32" or 33" tyres on there for a bit more advantage

Picked up the Prado this morning from having a Rear Locker installed yesterday. (Yahoo!) Pretty happy with the install. I already had the compressor so that made it easy. Just needed to re-route the air line by a more preferable route (just me being fussy, that's all) Now to get out on the tracks and make use of it.

                      Hey Craigm,

Just to let you know you have posted in the 90 series section not the 120 series. Anyways congrats on getting it installed. I love the lockers and makes the car a different beast off road.

Whilst Traction control gets me through most obstacles that I'm prepared to tackle, on occasion I push it harder than i would ideally like to. Having a rear locker should allow me to tackle those same obstacles with a lot less gusto and more controlled, therefore reducing a lot less stress on the drivetrain (CV's etc...)

It was fitted up by Westside4x4 at Sumner Park. It was a toss up between them and ARB Nundah. My local store (Cooper Plains) quoted me nearly $100 more which I was disappointed in. The staff member I used to deal with has since left and was I unhappy with the customer service I received when enquiring. Westside 4x4 were great and as they are part of the ARB network, I had no hesitation on going to them.

Yes I turned the switch panel upside down to tidy it all up. I also found that with the compressor switch on the bottom row (have had the compressor for a while now), that my knee would occasionally bump the switch when I jumped into the car. Much better now.
