  • D4D motor in Prado 90 series

I was visiting London and saw a Prado 90 series wagon with the D4D badge on it. Didn't know that they had this motor in them!

Same like in Thailand when I saw a Hilux two generations old, also with the D4D badge on it.

In both cases, the badges are not stuck on by hopeful owners, like you see some cheapie 3 series BMWs with an M3 badge. These were the real mcCoy.

I can put up a photo, if anyone is interested.

The D-4D engine came to europe in 2001.

This is what it looks like in my 3-door prado from 2001. All original.

From your photo it looks like it's direct injection engine though and not common rail like the current version.

Well, it says "KDJ90" in the papers, and "1KD-FTV" on the firewall.

Yeah, look I don't doubt you. It was just a passing comment. I just thought that from my (sometimes poor)memory the common rail was higher up and easily visible on our local D4D. In your pic the injector lines appear to run quite far down almost to where the pump is.

Maybe it's the angle of the pic, my poor memory or maybe there are some layout changes over the years, I guess it really doesn't matter. It's obviously still a 1kd.

Re: D4D motor in Prado 90 series

I look at the new NG Prado (150 Series) motor, and from the individual injector pipework, it doesn't look (to my untrained eyes) to be a common rail design, but perhaps that's how common rail is done these days.... Toyota's datasheet clearly states that this is a common rail injector system.

Re: D4D motor in Prado 90 series

Common rail is just as it states, the fuel for all cylinders is fed from the one fuel rail, just like it is with an EFI Petrol motor.
The location of the intercooler may force the fuel rail to be located lower on the engine, thus making the need for additional single line fuel delivery pipes to the actual injector.
97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

                      MickL,

before you pass sceptical judgement at Jema's claim he has a D4D in his 90 series, have a look at the obvious differences.

The Throttle body is different from the 1KZTE

The Airbox is on the opposite side to the one fitted to the 1KZTE

Just two things that convinced me.

Wish I could put one in my truck too.
