  • Have you seen how cheap these crappy Chinese units are to buy? http://www.alibaba.com/product-detai...933892459.html
There are literally 1000's listed on alibarba. Personally I still wouldn't buy one, but if it's the way you want to go, you can buy 5 to 1 or essentially self warrant the product. My dig options units were absolute puss, and the supplier nothing short of difficult when things got tuff.

Your setup is a good solution. Nothing hanging off mine to put it there?

Do you have a caravan camera? What did you use for a housing for the cable end at the rear of your vehicle; like an Anderson plug or wiring plug?

I jumped in and put the connections in place!!
The Caravan Camera needs mounting hardware where the cord comes out of the vehicle. Rather like an Anderson plug.
I have used two parts from Jaycar – one has the cord stuck inside it and the other is a screw on cap to keep it dry and dust free.
The Part Nos may be the wrong way around but you will get the drift if you look at them in the shop!

Part No – PS1003 (316052). This is the socket. It has 5 terminals that could replace the original four spot plug. You would need to find someone who can attach the wires for you.
I drilled out the socket and enlarged it with a rat file. It becomes a tight fit and a bit of sikaflex or silicone on the rear of the plug will ensure it stays put and is weatherproof. Secure it with tape as well on the back of the plug.

Part No – PS1005 (317022). This is the screw on cap. You will need to take the centre part out (easy), cut off the lug flush and glue (Araldite) the top of the plug back into the body. This is necessary, as the inside part of the cap hits the camera plug and the cap won’t screw down completely. Put one of the O rings back on the threads to make a better seal.

        • Hey anybody get hold of the newer AVN-T02 unit? I just got mine and for most part im pretty impressed with it considering its at least half the price of the main brands. Its taken me a while to get everything plumbed in (and i still have a few things to do this weekend) but im impressed with all the features. Oh and ozi explorer is awesome...bit of a dated operating system but still awesome!

A quick rundown, the unit quality is pretty good considering the price, it seems solid and is easy to use...it certainly looks factory as nobody has figured its an aftermarket unit. The operating system is good too and the graphics/menus etc looks every bit like it was installed by Toyota. The street navigation is great...better than my old tom tom but not as good as Google maps, also for some reason it had speed cameras everywhere...maybe it includes known mobile camera sites?

the off road navigation (oziexplorer) is great BUT you need to take some time out to learn how to use it. Its a very powerful piece of software but a bit of a nightmare to set up.

one glitch tho...if you try to switch from one nav system to the other on the fly it loses its satelite data stream. you have to switch the unit off and on again which is a bit annoying but is a 10 second operation...

Bluetooth works fine both with my music and phone, no complaints there and the phone number search functions are way better than the original Toyota unit...you swipe up and down through the phone book like an iPhone.

Radio is iffy. the reception is bad but ive been told by Matt that i need to earth the little black wire on the original Toyota aerial plug..ill try that this weekend. Funnily enough when i was in Adelaide the reception was great...maybe they have more powerful transmitters than in VIC?

TV i haven't tried but not fussed anyway..why would you want TV in a car anyway? The scenery when out bush or a good campfire is the best TV around ha ha.

I think this unit must have more of a matte screen as i don't find sunlight to be an issue (but then i do live in Melbourne...). If the sun is bright and at the wrong angle well then yes the screen is hard to see but seeing as you only ever glance at it rather than stare at it when driving (i hope) the chance of me glancing at the same time the sun has reached the right angle is slim.

Music from an SD card is good and again like an iPhone to navigate through your tunes, CD player i haven't tried as my music collection is digital anyway. It even has internet but again needs to be installed and ill need a dongle from an ISP.

It also has a load of other useless features and a couple of cameras that i haven't hooked up yet. By and large, and considering me it cost me $500ish im pretty pleased with it. Its has more features, is more user friendly and better looking than my father in laws $2000 system he has. As for reliability time will tell, it has a warranty like the more expensive systems out there. I'm just glad i have an in dash unit that is neat and tidy rather than having a load of iPhone and tablets stuck all over the windscreen and associated charger wires trailing around the cabin!
2013 (12 build) GX Auto.......with safari snorkel, toyota bar, tow bar, roof racks, led spots with fancy newpro switchgear, uniden remote UHF and aerial, ARB bash plates, Roadsafe recovery points, digoptions radio, general grabber AT2s, cheap ebay roof rack that has stood up surprisingly well.....

            • Yep I've recently installed the AVN-TO2 Platinum unit and reversing camera (licence plate).

Overall I'm very happy with it. I did the head unit install myself with no hassles, the Bluetooth works great as well as the sat nav, I haven't tried the ozi explorer maps yet, only street maps which are very current. I intend to do the VIC high rangers in July so will update on the ozi maps performance after the trip.

Radio reception is fantastic, 10x better than the factory toyota sat nav/radio I had previously, I have loads more channels (retroenduro I'll let you know if that changes when I enter VIC).

The reversing camera install I also did myself but this did take a lot longer (required a full day when connecting wires to reverse light and removing interior panels and reconnecting licence plate lighting wires).

              The only issues I have so far (which I am yet to contact Matt directly about...will do this weekend) are;

1st) the SRC button on the head unit remains red illuminated even when the button colours are changed to green or orange (all other buttons except the SRC change colour as selected) I'm sure it's just a menu configuration and Matt will hopefully have a solution for this when I contact him

2nd) The sat nav (Street Maps) repeats the words 'route recalculation' when I'm within 200-100m of the final destination.

3rd) and lastly, on installing the licence plate camera I cannot get a very good camera angle, no matter which way I position the camera I'm staring at the ground and car tow ball - has anyone experienced this? Is there a trick to it? I can position/hold the camera at the angle I need (so that the parking guides are relevant and I can see more than the tow ball) but the included bracket doesn't allow for the same angle. - Any and all feedback on this is welcome...again I'm sending Matt from Dig Options an email tomorrow, so hopefully he has an answer for me.

Other than the above everything has worked smoothly from the initial install, I'm very happy with the it and will update after consultation with Matt on the above items.

                • Well the reverse camera on my Dodgy Option GPS unit stopped working, don't know why and to be honest I don't care, its been such a useless piece of crap since the day I installed it that the reverse camera which was about the only thing useful; stopping working was all the excuse I needed to put it where it truly belongs.

I've put the original stacker back in and am happy as a pig in poo to have something that actually works like its supposed to again.

A lesson learned I guess, yeah it was cheap to buy, but it never actually did what I wanted it to do, so therefore not cheap at all. Thank god I don't have to put a dollar in a swear jar every time I drop an expletive, otherwise this unit would have cost me my life savings Glad to see the back of the Useless F#$*ING Piece of $#1T.

Here is just a few of the things that were totally crap.

Main complaint would be the Ozi Explorer, it just froze up all the time. I could select a map but after a short time it would revert to the default map, any attempts to change any settings to rectify this resulted in it freezing and needing rebooting.

The CD player, had no memory, so everytime you turn off the ignition it reverted to the start of the CD.

Ipod connection, no ability to use the ipod or the unit to navigate to playlists etc, it started at the start and the same as the CD player, everytime the ignition turned off it would revert to the start.

Screen, even when the mapping was sort of half working or the default map was the one needed, if it wasn’t night or very overcast the screen was almost impossible to see.

Reverse camera, if you didn’t have the unit on then by the time it booted up I had already reversed out the driveway and was on my way.

Street navigation, whilst it worked it was probably the worst street navigation I have ever used, yeah it would get you there, via every back street and long way round it could find and yes I had the setting for quickest not shortest route.

Buy one if you like but don’t say you weren’t warned.

As far as Navigation goes, I now use the Ipad with various apps, most notably the HEMA mapping app which is 100x better than this unit. Everything just works, all the time, straight out of the box, with little or no learning curve needed.

                  Cheers Andrew

Hema 4wd maps. I reckon I might lash out the 50 bucks for the Hema explorer app before the next big trip as well.

                      • I've installed one of these units and wished I'd checked this forum first. The unit operation is very average. Just a few of my gripes -
                        - navigation is average and often selects a ridiculous route
                        - the radio works fine, but the interface is poor. You can get it to auto tune all stations, but it tunes all the crap as well, so to select a station, you have to go up and down thru all the crap that's been tuned, or select the station from the list function. There's no way to delete the crap that's been tuned.
                        - the media player for playing music from a USB is terrible. You cannot just scroll through all the songs. You can search for a song, but then it just plays from that location in the list of songs on e USB. It also crashes regularly.
                        - when you answer a phone call, once the call is finished, it stays in the phone program and you have to change back to where you were.
                        - the screen is hard to see in the daylight
In general, a very clunky, typical Chinese crap software system.
I will persevere by trying to replace the crap program's with better ones.

                        • Hi All,
Looking for a suggestion to my problem.

I have been trying to get the front camera to record since a long while ago. Matt doesn't seem to have any more suggestions apart from replacing the recording box.

I get the screen display when selecting the camera through the switch box, so the cables are working. When I playback the so called recording, it is black. The only detail on the screen is the date, which took a while to setup as the writing on the screen is white; close to the colour of the background!

I have formatted the SD card; 16mb; a few times and am about to try a diffrerent format. It was FAT32 but am trying NTFS.

The lights on the recording unit work as per the instructions. Flashing red when recording. The recorder writes a folder to the SD card as it should and writes a file to the card. But the AVI file displays as a black screen.

I am at a loss to know what is stopping it from recording.

Can you suggest anything else to try?

                          Thanks

It is working. What did I do? Don't know......!
I think it might have something to do with setting the Options while the red light is on constantly. If it starts to blink when you are in the Settings menu it might muck it up.

                              Don't know.

Agree Andrew. Hema Maps app on the ipad was the best money i spent on navigation. Couldn't have done what i wanted to last year out around Astrebla Downs/Diamantina without it. Haven't tried the Explorer.
