    Re: At the Movies

Well I sat through New Moon last night with Neil and our eldest daughter.
I haven't read the books but the movies is quite good - I think it would have been better if we weren't so close to the front but you get that when you don't turn up eariler :| the crowd in the theatre made it better with there reactions to different thing especially at the end when the 6 young girl next to us realised the movie was over and 1 of them started screaming NO!!! it can't be the end

Watched "The Hangover" last night. Pretty funny indeed. Especially at the end of the movie.

            2012.

So totally unbelievable. Some good effects but the story line is pathethic. It's Day After Tomorrow, Poseidon Adventure, Armageddon, etc all rolled into one.

You'll all want to trade the Prado in on a stretched limo when you see what one of these babies can do and where it can go!

Certainly a different type of movie... typical sort of Tarantino. The characters in the movie are so unique.

              I would rate it

Also saw Crank 2 - High Voltage. IMHO its only a time waster... :| :|

Any one seen the new Sherlock Holmes movie yet? I'm hanging out to see this as I've always loved that era but I'm a little concerend about the American influence on the movie as I suspect that Sherlocks long lost brother Johnny my make an appearance.

                      Re: At the Movies

                      Avatar.

Slow to start. In fact the beginning of the movie is poorly done in terms of story progression, introducing characters and explaining just what the heck is going on with this "Pandora" planet. Somewhere throughout the movie you get a one liner stating that the Earth is in trouble. What? Tell me the heck about that! Unobtanium?? What's so good about it? It's worth a lot but why do we want it otherwise? So the humans are desperate???? Or what?? Exactly why are we fighting the natives? I mean you can guess but I want to be told what's happened to cause what's going on. A huge portion of story is missing and I feel that would have added the 5th star to the movie. As it is, its all about the battle but there was a lot more that could have been added.

As it is the storyline is simple enough. Pandora natives VS Techhed up humans in a big fight. Despite setbacks, you always have no doubt about the outcome. And couldn't the native woman been a little more hard to get for Sam Worthington??

The visuals are stunning. No doubt about it. You can see why James Cameron has taken years to make the film. However, the facial detail of the native people is strangely lacking, considering the richness of the environment all round them. Stood out huge for me. Facial detail at middle distance simply wasn't there. Hmmmmmmm. Come on James...... we can do better than that! Close up was fine, glowing freckle things and all. Still, to dream up alien environments with such detail is a truly immense achievement and it's worth watching the film just for that. Some of the long shot visuals are stunning.

Action sequences are extremely well put together. Have you ever watched a film where you completely lost exactly who you were looking at during a big complicated fight? Transformers 2??? Doesn't happen in Avatar. The action is so well streamlined and bought together you can follow it no problem. And the final battle is EPIC. Not easy to do, but Avatar does it.

There are some characters who aren't fully fleshed out which is a shame. Forgotten all names, but the guy in charge of the mining operations seems to have some internal conflict about what's going on. But you only ever get the barest hints of that, and it doesn't go anywhere. Better if at the end he dials Earth and tells them to shove it where the sun don't shine, or ceases all mining operations in a strike until all parties are happy ..... or something. As it is it's left hanging and that's bad for any subplot, no matter how small.

See it for the stunning visuals and purely imaginative detailed environments. And whack on the 3D glasses while you're at it. You'll be sorry you didn't.

Four wide eyed guys! Storyline and character development killed the-oh-so-near 5th.

Does it matter - that far into the future (sometime after 2100), the planet is gonna be buggered - but considering they are on Pandora mining for a mineral, my guess would be that the minerals on Earth have run out?

Unobtanium?? What's so good about it? It's worth a lot but why do we want it otherwise?
Again, it doesn't matter what its used for- its a mineral - like oil, gold, whatever

So the humans are desperate???? Or what?? Exactly why are we fighting the natives?
Because the natives don't want the mining to occur as they are 'in touch' with the environment - I thought that was pretty straight forward

And couldn't the native woman been a little more hard to get for Sam Worthington??
Come on now, women aren't that hard to get are they? She only trained him up for 3 months!
The rest of your comments, I am on your side!

I watched District 9 the other day. The story was just OK, but the special effects was sweet eye candy.

The best part of the movie was definately the Hilux. I want that thing.

I took the other half out for dinner and a movie tonight (had to sweeten her up since coming home with a boxed snorkel)
Its scared the bejezus out of her and she has vowed to never ever watch these kinds of movies/shows anymore. She used to watch and tape these types of series on foxtel called ghost adventures and most haunted (W channel), but I have a feeling she wont be anymore..
Funnily enough she hasnt left my side since coming home

It is a very budget looking movie, which has been setup to make it look like it was actual events. There were a few moments where the hairs on my neck stood up ops: The sound track in the movie uses subwoofers and bass very effectively
