  • Re-programming central locking remote

    Hi,

Managed to pick up a second hand central locking remote for our 2001 Prado. Followed the instructions on the (Toyota) manual included with our owner's manual to program in the new remote as below but tried for about 30 mins and couldn't get past step 5. No matter how many times I tried I couldn't get the indicators to flash at all (let alone 20 times :? ). Has anyone out there actually managed to do this?

    Thanks,

    fruitbat

"The following procedure details the steps to follow for the programming of additional remote transmitters. Use the first procedure if you have a functioning transmitter or the second procedure if you have no functioning transmitters.

With at least one functional transmitter

    1. Ensure door is open

    2. Remove key from ignition

    3. Lock the doors using the transmitter

    4. Unlock the doors using the transmitter

    5. Within 20 seconds of unlocking, insert key into the ignition cylinder and turn key from the "ACC position to the "ON" position 20 times - leaving the key in the "OFF" position after the 20th turn

    6. The vehicle's indicators will flash 20 times to indicate successful entry

    7. On the 20th flash of the indicators, press the button once on each transmitter

    8. Once finished, turn the ignition key to the "ON" position to lock in and exit from the programming mode"

    Re: Re-programming central locking remote

Bingo...got it to work. I think you were right - you have to be pretty quick turning the key through the on/off cycle. Got it all programmed in so all good!

    Thanks for your help

      Re: Re-programming central locking remote

OK I have a 2001 Prado 90 GXL, without central locking remotes.....

Can I just get a pair of fobs & go through a procedure...?

If so what is the procedure without having 1 working unit?

      Cheers

        Re: Re-programming central locking remote

        Hi Richard,

If your car has central locking then this may work but I think you need to double-check that there's a receiver unit in the car that will 'talk' to the remote fobs. I think (not too sure here) that the unit is somewhere behind the glove-box. I also think that the later 2001 models have remote central locking but I would recommend that you check this out. If you find that your Prado has the required unit then PM me as I have instructions for programming from scratch without an existing remote fob.

        Cheers,

          Re: Re-programming central locking remote

Thanks, I had a look at the information provided by the dealer, it states that the remote central locking is an option for the RV spec level, so at this stage we are assuming that the GXL is capable out of the box....

In any event the option was only something like $130, but not sure if it comes with the fobs as I think they where $70 each....

I will investigate further see what i come up with.

          Thanks

            Re: Re-programming central locking remote

            Hi Richard,

I got my fobs from ebay - there's one here

Once you get one, you can be up and running - the programming is very easy and certainly not worth paying for. When you get another remote it's easy to program. Also, check with your Toyota dealer as I think the remotes are cheaper than you may think.

            Cheers,

              Re: Re-programming central locking remote

Apparentlly if your Prado is older than 1999, then the remote central locking is standard on the GXL, but optional on the RV.

I picked up 2 fobs from Toyota, total was around $83.00

Now all I need is the procedure to activate without having any working fobs......

                Re: Re-programming central locking remote

Ok All sorted....after a lot of turning the iginition switch! Lets say I needed more than 20 to finally get two new fobs working.

                Hints....
Because I didn't have a working fob, I had to try the other method which basically adds a first step of disconnecting the battery, waitng 5 minutes & starting the above process within 20 seconds of reconnection...you can then jump straight to step 5 the key turning....

The directions say ACC to ON (However OFF to ON also works, but try ACC to On as its easier ...& do it quickly) Flick Flick Flick Flick about that quick....

The light will flash 20 times, then you have perhaps 1 sec to push you buttons on the fobs, on each valid push the indicators flash. Remember now to turn the key to On then OFF to set.

After trying the "without any working fob" method a few times, I could only get 1 remote working at a time, so I tried the above method discribe with one working fob & I was able to program both by pushing both in the 1 second or so after the 20 flashes...

Persistance is the key & the speed of the ignition turning.

Oh another hint, when doing step 3 & 4 locking the door with the door open will make the lights flash (I think 10 times) This is just the normal warning that a door is not closed & you are trying to lock it. Just ignore the flashes & unlock the door as in step 4 in a second or so. As in Lock - Unlock.

                Cheers

Re-Programming central locking remote with no working fob

                  Hi Guys,
I've recently bought a 2000 model Prado without any working remote and have purchased a second hand remote of ebay. I've tried the programming procedures found online with no success. Now I see there's a different procedure if the are no working remotes? Can anyone give me the correct procedure for this?
                  Cheers

                    Exactly right.

Worked perfectly for me on my 2002 Prado.

I posted this on another thread but the same applies here (and this is the one I found via google when first looking) so have put it here too in case it helps someone. With no working remotes the process is a little different (you can find it on LCOOL) as you have to disconnect the battery for 5 mins and leave the driver door open. You have 20 secs after reconnecting the battery to do the acc to on 20 quick flicks.

Just had to do this myself...as the old remotes shat themselves and took me a while getting around to a replacement.
Had to go the battery disconnection route. One thing I noted (as it took me a couple of goes) is that when you get into the programming mode with the 20 acc to on clicks....leave the key on the acc (the instructions say off position but acc works), each remote you then press after the 20 confirmation flashes you will get two flashes of the indicator lights to say it has been programmed. Then switch to On to save the settings.

Can someone please advise where the remote receiver module is located in a 2003 GXL GJR120? The manual I have indicates it is under the lower left-hand scuff panel, however it is not and I cannot locate anything that looks remotely simliar anywhere under or behind the dash on either side of the vehicle.

I'm waking this thread up again because I've just got a bee in my bonnet about remote locking too. My bus (120 series) was built in 2008 and is a "Standard" model - aka GX in other years I think. Anyway, it has central locking via the key, but not REMOTE central locking - no buttons on the key. And for some reason I have now decided it would be nice to have it.

After quite a bit of online research I established that the remote receiver lives behind the lining inside the rear pillar fairly high up on the left side. I opened up the lining and as expected, there is no receiver box there. BUT - there IS a connector on the wiring loom which I'm sure is where it would plug in. I have found a used receiver on Ebay for well under $100. So I'm thinking I might get that and install it, then get a generic remote of the correct frequency and program it up - I have also found the rather convoluted procedure for doing that. I don't really want (or need) to change my keys, I just want to add the remote function. So my questions are:

                            1. Should this work? Or do I need a genuine Toyota remote (which is also a key).
                            2. If I do need a Toyota remote, can I just use the remote function and continue to use my current keys?
                            3. My understanding is that the key contains a component that is sensed by the car in order to deactivate the immobiliser when starting. If I do need to have a Toyota key/remote, and I only use the remote part of it, would its proximity confuse the car when starting - because there would be 2 of these close together on the keyring?
                            4. Would I be better off forgetting all this and going with an after-market product?

                            Cheers, Steve

                              1. I reckon it'll work. I'm not a mechanic though. But at least for the 90 series, as far as I can tell, the remote central locking is a seperate item.
                              2. Yes, at least for the 90 series you can. You can program it yourself through a series of actions like opening the door 5 times or similar.
                              3. I doubt it - I have 2 ignition keys on my keyring and my cars have not failed to start. They key has to be pretty close to the column to be read.
                              4. Maybe - depends on the cost I guess.
