    Re: 1KZ-TE EGR System

    Hi all
Just a quick question is there any long term problems caused by blocking the EGR off or is it better in the long term

It is better for your engine in the long term to block it off.
EGR was only introduced here relatively recently. It has been mandatory in European vehicles for a long time now. Imported vehicles such as the Pajero, Prado etc used to have the EGR blanked off at the factory for Australian sales. Now that Aus is complaint with Euro emissions spec, the EGR systems are hooked up at the factory.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

Do I blank off both ends and keep the EGR connected so I don't get any fault codes?

Just blank off one end and leave the egr valve connected as normal. If the inlet manifold has never been cleaned you might as well remove it to clean it thoroughly and while it is stripped down with the egr valve removed blank it off then.

Shim steel is the best material to use to make up a blanking plate.

Ok Finally got the time over the weekend to pull off the intake manifold and clean it. And Wow the build-up took me 5 litres of degreaser, a toothbrush and most of the day to remove. I was truly shocked how much build up there was.

I then decided to put a shim on the intake manifold side of the egr. Is there anything else that I need to do other than this? Block any hose’s?

Also I broke off the plastic cylinder to the sensor circled in the photo. I have put a screw in it for now but should I be worried? It connects to the top of the egr.

                  Hi,
We have just returned from Broome- Perth return trip in 120 Prado with 1KZ-TE engine, doing oil change at home and noticed oily deposit around where the inter-cooler joins the intake manifold. Looks like sump oil, is this related to the EGR valve?
It's done 220,000 km, still runs perfect and didn't miss a beat on the 8000 km trip towing the tinny. Has Beaudsert exhaust & Steinbauer Chip. Had regular (5000km) oil and filter changes & never noticed this oily stain before - I'm no expert but it appears this area of the engine isn't really connected to any part of the oil system so figured it might be part of the EGR - any advice would be great!
Can look into posting a pic if needed, just thought I'd check before going to Toyota mechanic?

That's fairly normal, it's not the egr rather a leak at the "throttle body" or more correctly intake damper. The gaskets are steel shim and aren't the best seal against oil. The intake will have some oil present from the crankcase ventilation system. Not an issue - degrease and wash it off and if you're overly concerned strip the intake and seal with silicon sealant/515/hylomar. If you haven't disabled the egr or fitted a catch can you would need to strip and clean the intake manifold anyway. How many km has it done?

Thanks Adrian, that all makes sense and sounds about right, (it was a pretty long haul in 40C conditions.)
It's a 2003 model with only 220km and in great condition for its age.
                      Cheers Ted

                        Hi guys,

I know this thread is fairly old, but I'm just wondering where the best spot on the intake is to spray in a few cans of the threebond diesel conditioner. It's good stuff for cleaning out the egr buildup.

                        Cheers Dave
