  • 1KZ-TE EGR System

    Gidday

Is there an easy way to disable the EGR system without having to remove the whole system? Is it as simple as disconnecting the plug that goes into the valve or blanking off a vacuum hose? If so, exactly what do I do? I'd rather keep the system in-situ (and non operational) if I could. Is this possible?

    Thanks

Plug the vacuum line close to the diaphram.

Leave the position sensor and two vacuum control valves plugged in or you will register a fault code on the ECU.

For that "as it was from the factory" look use a ball bearing inside the hose to block it and push the hose back onto the diaphram.

The more obvious alternatives are to blok the hose with a screw or just kink it over and put a cable tie around it.

      Thanks Mick

Pardon my ignorance but do I plug the line that runs downwards (the one with the green plastic thing in it) or the other one. Both of these lines are plugged into the diaphragm. :?

      Cheers

Yes the one that runs downwards (With the little green plastic check valve in it)

The other one runs under the intercooler to a purge valve attached to the intake manifold. It can all be left in place.

            Re: 1KZ-TE EGR System

The EGR is part of the emission control system. It takes some of the exhaust gas and re enters it into the intake manifold.

Over time this coats the intake with a nice thick layer of sooty tar (the soot gets mixed with oily blow by gases from the rocker cover as well) obviously over the long term the choking up of the intake manifold has quite an effect on performance.

Also leaking EGR valves cause all sorts of hard to diagnose performance issues. (poor idle, flat spots etc)

In theory introducing hot exhaust gas back into the intake air after the intercooler would also have an effect on out right performance (after all you want the coolest in take temps you can)... in the real world you probably won't notice any small gain made by blocking it though.

            On the flip side:

Obviously your car is unroadworthy with a tampered with emission system, and if you're any sort of tree hugger, then you probably wouldn'y want to do it either

              Re: 1KZ-TE EGR System

              Thanks for the info Mick.

Re: unroadworthiness, hence the reason for wanting to disable the EGR but still have it all in place. To the unknowing eye, at least it will still look stock and un-tampered with. I disabled the EGR last night by plugging the vacuum line and went on a 400k run today, and to be honest no real noticeable difference but using the old system of "kilometres travelled per fuel gauge graduation", fuel consumption seems to be a little better. I'll monitor the situation over the next few tankful's and report back.

              Cheers

Impossible to get a clear shot due to various hoses and cables being in the way. Hope this diagram helps:

                    Re: 1KZ-TE EGR System

I just chopped the end of one of my vacuum hose plugs and jammed it down the tube highlighted in Mick's picture. I then reconnected the hose to the diapragm. This way the EGR system looks completely stock.

Is there any way to clean up an intake that has been coated with oil sludge and egr residue without dismantling it? Would a carby cleaner or similar type chemical work for a turbo diesel engine without causing damage?

Here is a product that is suppose to do the work. http://www.wynns.be/news.aspx?l=EN&isec ... icleid=826

                        I haven't tried it though.

                            Hi Mitch

No real gains - haven't noticed any decrease in fuel consumption, or an increase for that matter. What I did notice when I took the intercooler pipe off the throttle body was an amazing amount of tar etc. caked on the butterfly valve thingo and the throttle body itself. It was like marmite/vegemite, so I got hold of a can of the Wynns product mentioned above and ran that through the intake system. Hey presto, vegemite/marmite stuff all gone! It blew a small amount of smoke for a couple of days but things returned to normal very quickly, within a day or two. No increase in oil consumption since. I'll take the intercooler pipe off at some stage soon and let you know if the buildup has returned.

                            Cheers

When I used to work for Subaru we used a product called Subaru Upper Engine Cylinder Cleaner. Same stuff I would say.

You can run it through whilst the engine is running. Kepp the revs up, remove a vaccum hose and spray via the small tube supplied into the plenum. The car blows lots of nice white smoke as it burns all the carbon and crap, but gee did it make a difference to the responsiveness of a subie!!
