  • Front Runner WindCheetah Roofrack

    Hi All

Anyone here have one of these roofracks installed on their baby? I'm thinking of purchasing one of these but would like to know how it's actually mounted on the roof with the track, if you can post up some pic's that would be fantastic. I'm looking at this rack simply because it will fit under my garage door with a roof top tent!

If you're interested in this roof rack here is some info on them.

    Thanks in advanced.

    Cheers

Looking at the picture it goes onto the rails as a replacement for the toyota ones. But saying this, I could probably mount one of those onto my HD rhino rails using some "U" clamps or bolts. Looks sexy, but for me, I like the sides like the Rhino alloy jobs or ARB for bolting things on thats all. But for a rooftop tent like you say, would be great I'm sure.

Opposite Lock do the same rack, I think they just rebadge it with the OL logo, but you may find more info on the racks here -

I like the look of them too, but the dollars are a bit on the high side for me.

      Good luck though

        Re: Front Runner WindCheetah Roofrack

I've been mulling this over the last couple of months. Ordered one the other day - 2metres, from Opposite Lock.

You can install it two ways:
        * Remove the standard rails and replace with WindCheetah tracks
        * Mount it to the existing rails using the Rhino-type clamp feet.

Personally, I wouldn't bother installing it on top of the standard rails if you're looking to minimise height.

The rack is light (33kg) and strong with lots of accessories available. It mounts low, so the wind noise and resistance empty should be minimal. (well, minimal for a rack, anyway) There is another similar rack from Hannibal, but it appears to be significantly dearer again.

I'm hoping it will turn up and get installed in the next week. I need to remove the standard rails before then, will post pics if no-one else does first.

Thanks Golly and Steve for your input.

Steve, yep it's pricey similar to the new ARB alloy. The problem with the ARB alloy is that you cannot get it without the sides for a rooftop tent, strength issues. Dolium is an OL store here in Perth so that explain them on the OL website. Actually the photo's are better than the Dolium Site!

Doing a bit more research for those who are interested here is a Pajero using the existing factory roof rails and the Wind cheetah rack.http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/sho ... php?t=2750

Damn that fits nicely doesnt it.....
Might be an option, what I like about that rack after looking at her, is the flat sides at the back for my twin rear worklights yet to be installed.
That would be snazzy actually. And yes, the extra attachements looks like it can compare to the full racks.... I like more and more now... thanks for that buddy.

                Re: Front Runner WindCheetah Roofrack

The standard install is to fit new tracks to the roof, and their own feet fit those tracks in 2 different heights.

From what I've seen, the rack seems quite adaptable. The factory feet are bolted to the rack frame, so the Thule feet might work. Best shot would be to take one with you to OL and check it against a rack.

 I have to agree with you on that FlyingBushPig. Then again I do own a Prado so I don't feel that bad!

Anyway I answered my own question by buying a 2m WindCheetah roofrack and installed it myself this morning. Yep the supplied track bolts straight into the exisiting roof rail bolt holes, the track itself is extruded Al utilising the same captive nut principle as the roofrack slats, this allows for the roofrack to slide further forward or back on the roof. It's a nice looking rack but it does create a bit of wind noise I don't know if this is better or worst when compared to an ARB style roofrack. Just need the rooftop tent now!

                  Thanks all for your comments.

                        Cool, thanks.

Did you have the factory rails? Were there any gotchas to remove them and install the track/rack?

How did you get it home?

I did have the factory rails, I removed them using your detailed instructions from the following thread http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3841. Thanks Michael!

The hardest part of the whole excercise was removing the plastic covers from the original factory rails, and getting the windcheetah home after taking off the factory rails, I could have strapped the windcheetah onto the factory rails and driven home with it but ended up using the trailer.

                          Anyway here are the pic's

                              Nick,

You'd have to be happy with that! Photos look good. Is the rubber trim missing from the passenger side channel?

The rails removal instructions were by 05oiler (Garry), I just resized the photos and inserted them into the thread.

Thanks for the info, I was going to take my own roof rails off, but I'll leave them on and use them to pick up the rack when it turns up.
