  • Parking brake and ABS lights on

    Hi All,

I have done a search and checked the owners manual but to no avail,

Has any one got any idea what this would be caused by, or how to remedy it.

    History.
During the day we were out on a WA PP day drive, We got some water in the doors onto the carpet.
Got home and pulled the seats and carpet for a clean.
Put front seats back in and took the boat out for a canal Christmas lights tour in the evening.
1/2 way home after retrieving the boat, the Parking brake warning light AND the ABS warning light came on.

Now this gets the brain working.
1  could I have some water in the electronics from the days activities?.
2  Could I have bumped a wire when pulling the carpets?.
3  Could the boat trailers wiring caused a short through the cars wiring from being in the water?.

Thought I would wait the night and see if it dried out. But no, wishful thinking. lights still on this morning.

Its Sunday so cant go into the dealerships workshop today, But hope fully it is just a reset.
    Will call them tomorrow.

    Does anyone have anything????

Check your Brake light fuse, from memory there was a post recently were someone had ABS light problems and I think faulty trailer wiring caused the problem.

It may be a long shot, but is your brake fluid level ok?

I had this drama a few months ago. When this blew on my Prado, it only stopped the auto shift stick from leaving park. I had to hit the shift lock button on the tranny to get it into gear. Having said that, this was in my instance. Wouldn't hurt to check reagardless I guess.

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

          Ok, a little update.

I checked all the fuses that I thought had some sort of relationship to anything that might resemble ABS or brake or park but all was good on that front.

I disconnected the batteries, I unplugged and checked connections in and around the brake booster, Checked the brake fluid level etc. Still no good.

Took a drive down to Bunnings as our freekin Hot water system split and the warning lights went out. For about 10mins anyway .
So It got me thinking about water in wheel connections or similar.

Checked all wheel sensors and they seemed dry and not damaged.
Then I started tracing the wires from the back wheel sensors and they come up into the cabin just behind the front passenger seat.

I think I splashed the sponge around and wet this connection as I was cleaning so I disconnected the plug, shock it around and got a bit of water out of it.

A bit of drying and wiping and checking and so far I have not had the warning come up again.

I went for a drive and all was good. I disconnected the plug to check what would happen and the warning lights came back on. I Plugged it back in but the lights stayed on. I stopped the car, turned off the ignition, started it and the lights go out. Must be like a reset.
So I guess it is what caused it.

They say things come in threes.

1st  got stuck in a puddle and got wet carpets.
2nd  pulled the carpets out and used a wet sponge that got in a plug.
3rd  Hot water system split.

Hope that is the end of murphy, bring on christmas..

          Thanks for the input guys.

And hopefully it can help some one else.

          JeffS.

Well its been a week now and I have not seen another warning light.

I suppose its a bit of info for other PPers that this plug under the 2nd row passenger side seat can cause warning lights to illuminate if water gets in it.

You will get water in it if you really drown the prado, or if you splash a wet sponge around while cleaning with the carpets out.

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

We had the same issue a few days ago, in fact it only started happening as we were about to go away for four days. I'm not a motor mechanic and didn't really know where to look (other than here of course). I saw Jeff's post and tried to find some of the connections and at the same time my wife rang the RAA for them to have a look.

The RAA guy turned up and couldn't find any issue and the lights where no longer on :? He took it for a test run and gave the sensors a good look over and clean.

While away the problem only re-emerged once when I went for a drive to the local shops to get a pack of Corn Flakes.

I'm getting it serviced next week and will ask Toyota to have a look. Hopefully the onboard computer has recorded some sort of error code to help identify the issue for us.

I forgot to post here after the service I had. Toyota found nothing. The onboard computer hadn't logged anything as an error relating to this and the damn problem still persists. I'll be ringing a few 4wd specialists to see if any of these guys have encountered the issue and then take it to them to get this resolved.

I suspect it is a computer fault since if this occurs for me, then if I turn off the ignition and back on then the computer has reset and all is good (hopefully).

have you tried removing the battery terminal connectors? this is how i normally reset the computer.

i dont think the turning on/off at the ignition resets the computer.
                      Cheers,

Maybe my statement of resetting the computer is wrong but it clears the status such that when you turn the key to the on position it is no longer displaying the two lights. If these are to be displayed then they both come on together after the car has started but it dosn't always come on. Just intermittent but once on it stays on until the car is turned off.

Last weekend I installed a dual battery system and so the primary battery terminals where both disconnected. This didn't change things at all.

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

So I finally got around to pulling the middle passenger seat out to look at the socket as per Jeffs info above. Did pretty much the same as in disconnected and turned the key to ignition and the ABS lights stayed on. Turned off reconnected and turned to ignition and ABS on for about 4 seconds and then off (as normal).

I DID NOT find any water or dirt ingress but what I did find was the socket was covered in a white grease. I'm assuming this is for conductivity purposes OR to minimise the amount of crap that may filter in. Just wonder if Jeff or anyone else who has had a look can comment on the grease on this connection. I did take a photo or two so I'll put those up later but now I've got some family stuff top deal with.

Here's hoping the Park Brake and ABS light are no longer coming on WITHOUT any reason.

Here are some pictures of the grease on the socket. Any one else pulled their middle row apart and found the socket covered in grease?

Was fairly easy to get to:

Took the bus for a couple of short trips yesterday after having a look and so far the light has not come up but it was always intermittent anyway. I'll give it a few weeks/months before the verdict is out.
