Fuel Filter

Hi guys,
I am about to service my 2007 Prado (20K or 12 months service). The service book tells that the fuel filter needs to be replaced. A few questions here:
1. How many fuel filters does D4D Prado has?
2. Is it correct that the filter has to be replaced at 20K? The Toyota parts salesman told me today (when I bought a filter) that he thought that fuel filter needs replacement at at least 40K if not at 60K. My mechanic which will be doing a service told me not to bother and replace it at 60K.
I'll do it as per the book and replace the fuel filter as required regardless. What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

I would highly recommend sticking to the service guide as a $40 filter can save you thousands of dollars on a fuel system repair. I'm going to talk about a Hilux here but it has the 1KD D4D engine. I had one last week that the owner had got a big BIG dose of water through the system. It was towed in as a no start, and the supply pump was not giving enough pressure to start the engine. This vehicle required a supply pump, tank removal and clean, fuel pick-up in the tank, all lines cleaned and a new filter. A fuel sample was given to the owner as he was going to see his fuel supplier about his rather large insurance claim on repairs due to contamination. Drain your water traps regularly guys!! Any Hilux owners reading this, there is no scheduled service period for your filters, a light comes on on the dash and you drain/replace the filter. Filters are cheap!!! Fuel systems are not. It would certainly be a good thing to drain/replace them occasionally, just keep them clean.

Hi guys,

It will have a sock filter in the tank, don't worry about that. Not a service item.
It will have a main filter in the engine bay with a primer pump on the top and a water drain tap on the bottom. Landcruiser utes ran a primary and main filter, probably as they have to deal with poorer grades of fuel from farm storage tanks etc.

Thanks Scoot,
The filter I bought was a sediment filter element that sits under the bonnet. It was actually $64.50, not $40 as you mentioned :evil: Still it is a good and cheap reassurance against contaminated diesel fuel.

Filters are cheap!!! Fuel systems are not. It would certainly be a good thing to drain/replace them occasionally, just keep them clean.
