  • Prado ground clearance

    G'Day
This is my first post so be gentle.
My previous vehicle was a vt commodore with 153mm of ground clearance. My 2 year old VX 4000 petrol has 181mm according to the specs but Ive measured it as 190. Now this is my first "off road" vehicle and In my naievty I expected a much higher clearance. 30mm difference between the cars doesnt seem much. Does this sort of clearance present any problems in the bush? I dont plan any exceptionall hard off roading but you never know when something out of the ordinary might crop up. Thanks

    Re: Prado ground clearance

Ground clearance measured from the lowest point to the ground, which on a Prado is usually the bottom of the rear diff (i am willing to be corrected). The only way it can be increased is to fit bigger tyres. But to answer your question,

a vehicle fitted standard size tyres would only come to grief on a deeply rutted track.

Oh and please put your location in your profile.

    Cheers,

      Re: Prado ground clearance

You will probably find that the commadore has 153mm of clearance all over the place underneath with lots of things ready to hit things underneath. On the Prado the clearance is probably just under the bottom of the diff with most of the rest up a lot further than that. A lot of it is about the approach and departure and ramp over angle and you need to get to know where the bits are that are the lowest so that when you are on the tracks you know where to steer to miss then (or put protection under there)

        Re: Prado ground clearance

Hi "Honda" I checked Toyo website http://www.toyota.com.au/prado/specifications/gx-petrol and it mentioned 205mm clearance unladen. Same specs across the range. I, along with other PPers would like to know where this measurement is taken from. As you mentioned, you measured from the ground to the diff and I expect that toyo also measured the same distance, but in saying that, the "205mm unladen" measurement may indicate that when the vehicle is loaded, that this measurement may change. Interesting topic for sure.

          Re: Prado ground clearance

I suspect that the official ground clearance is measured under the sump/front differential guard. As such it will vary with load etc. Cannot be sure exactly because I had my Prado lifted before delivery. Just checked the car and under the rear diff I have 235mm of clearance. This is with 25,000 km old 265/65 17 Cooper ATRs on Phoenix alloys. From memory this is pretty much the same as the 90 with 265/70 16 BFG A/Ts. Under the sump I have 245mm at the lowest point. This is obviously after the 2" Toughdog lift - suspension measurements are in the suspension thread. I can remember measuring a mate's 120 TD against my 90 before I bought the D4D and was surprised that while the 90 had about the same clearance front and rear the 120 was definately lower under the engine.

Nothing else is even close to these heights with the gearbox and fuel tank bash plates another 15+mm higher. I want to go 275/65 17 next time and that will give another 7 or so mm under the naughty bits. Be aware also that the Cooper ATRs are a few mm larger in overall diameter than the Grandtreks even though they are nominally the same size, when I first got the car I did a quick comparison of the Coopers against the AT20s that now live on the trailer (and before you ask it was with no weight on the tyres).

            Re: Prado ground clearance

I'd like to know how much fuel Toyota had in their vehicle when they measured it. I lose noticeable ride height when I fill mine right up, although I haven't measured the difference. Might just do that next time I fill it right up. I bet also that the listed ride height is without a bullbar or any other add ons. With only the Sovereign bar and dual batt's I've lost a good amount of ride height up front. Looks wierd I can tell you. Especially when I'm getting near empty and the rear sits up a little more.

Thanks for the replys guys. Some good stuff was included. I reinvestigated under the beast and the lowest point is definately under the guards to the rear or the engine. Even with these protection plates removed I think it would still be the lowest point.Obviously this amount of clearance is adequate as the Prado has taken out plenty of awards.Just seems low to me. Interestingly the Pajero ( Wash my mouth with soap and water) is 50mm better clearance.. Makes ya think...Im situated at Narrabri North West NSW.

Many people would say that the diesel Prado does have a height problem in its stock form, most 4wheelers on here have either already had a 50mm lift kit added or have it on their wish list.

                  Re: Prado ground clearance

The more I think about ground clearance the more interesting it becomes..For instance (and I will happily be corrected) due to the suspension a load in the back wont lower the clearance of the diff at all ( Discounting tyre deformation). But of course a load toward the front will lower the clearance in the area below the engine.I dont know if any of this is very "weighty" pardon the pun but it keeps the ol grey matter active.

                    Re: Prado ground clearance

Well you'd have to do something fairly drastic to have the diff sitting lower to the ground. The diff height can only be changed by putting on higher or lower profile tires pretty much as you've said. If you put in one heck of a load in the rear and forgot to pump up the back tyres then you might be in trouble. Anything sitting on top of the suspension (Car body, engine, fuel tank etc etc) will all benefit nicely from a suspension upgrade resulting in a higher ride height for all those components. And let's face it, getting all those things further away from nasties isn't a bad Idea at all. So because the engine does ride on top of the suspension, extra weight up there will make it closer to the ground. As in my case. I think really, if you're going to be adding much beyond a bullbar you'd need to think about a suspension upgrade. If I put a winch on right now Id be hitting the stops most likely and I can do without that happening.
