  • 90 series central locking issues

Hey all, Just recently the central locking started to "unlock" all by its self!
I don't have power windows as its an RV6 with factory central locking.

Any ideas on waht could be causing this? I have checked the ground on the battery, just in case and it seems to be fine. HELP! Its rather concerning when you take it out and you swear you have locked it, but when you get back from going out, its unlocked!

Mine used to do the same thing but hasnt done it for ages now. I'm not sure if it was coincidence or not, but I found locking the back door with the key seemed to solve the problem.

Often while driving I could hear the central locking clicking away, and if you looked carefully you could see the button on the door moving with each click.

I think its quite a common problem with the 90 series, I know it was discussed a lot on the Yahoo sites but I cant remember if anyone found a cause or solution.

Like I said, whenever mine started to play up I would lock it via the rear door and that seemed to solve the problem. It hasnt done it now for well over 12 months, so I'm really not sure if the problem solved itself or my "solution" fixed the problem.

Check out 90scool and 90series on Yahoo, there is a lot of info there.

Thanks Rainman. I have not driven it for about 3 days now and it still hasn't unlocked itself yet! (Fingers crossed!) I will try locking it from the rear only and see how that goes.

I spoke to and auto elecy friend and he suggested that i unplug the lock/unlock switch from the dash. If it does it again, i will try that. He had never heard of the problem before!

Re: 90 series central locking issues

        Hi,

I have a 99 Snowy edition (GXL) and I have experienced the same issue with the central locking unlocking the doors about 30 secs after locking. I have also experienced only the door you are locking (with the key the remote died a while ago) actually locking. I also discovered that locking using the rear door seems to solve both these issues.

It is strange and it is an intermittent problem that I would like to get to the bottom of, anyone found the cause yet?

        Cheers

        Dave

Re: 90 series central locking issues

          Hi There,

I have the same problem in my 99 model gxl. I have noticed that if I lock or unlock the doors via the rear door(boot) then the central locking starts to click away like crazy and unlock itself.

So, I now simply unlock and lock the doors from the front door and that seems to temporarily solve this problem.

Re: 90 series central locking issues

my 96 has not yet had a critical issue with the central locking. It works when I lock the vehicle to leave it and it works when I return to unlock it...(From the remote). This is not an issue so I have not needed to rely on the key to lock or unlock yet.

            a) The remote for central locking appears to be expiring in terms of plastic fatigue and the trusty superglue has slowed this down for now.

            b) The remote has two buttons. It is not a normal moving part for the remote buttons and the small button requires some fiddling to actually activate it. If you have a working remote and you dismantle it, you will quickly realise that the second button is actually there and it does something...however unveiling exactly what it is that the second button does is still a mystery for me.

            c) I have illicited a similar issue from the central locking by repeat locking and unlocking (starting off the central locking's, click click click syndrome) By pressing the second button on the remote I have found it makes the central locking do something, but does not lock or unlock the car, and usually when next locking or unlocking the car the central locking goes wacko again before settling down and working again.

            d) The second button may have something to do with the immobiliser as the car will not start if I have pressed the second button until the central locking does it click click click thing.

Does any one have a clear explaination as to what the second button does or does not do? Is the remote essential for using the central locking correctly and the door (central locking) swith only for overriding when the remote has a dead battery?

              Hi

I found the solution to the problem I posted about in 2008, yes a long time I know :-)

Our 99 Snowy edition (GXL) was experiencing the issue with the central locking unlocking the doors about 30 secs after locking. This problem occurred when I wasn't using the remote as the battery had died and I misplaced it. I subsequently found it one day and replaced the battery and locked the car with the remote. It locked and unlocked a couple of times and then worked correctly and has done ever since which has been for about four years now.

              Hope this helps.

              Cheers

Wow, So my 2001 Model just started doing the same thing today. Unlocking itself.

Now being the savvy electrician I am, I immediately whipped out the workshop manual, and began tracing the wiring. As Dave mentioned above my model does not have key-less entry, just central locking with the key.

Below is a step by step Guide on what I did, Note Problem has "Disappeared" I am not convinced I have solved it.

                1. Power cycle the electrical system. (Disconnect and reconnect the battery).
                2. Study the wiring diagram, resulting in unlock pulses are sent from Drivers Side Door key, Drivers door button switch, Passenger Door Key, Rear Door key to "Integration" Relay (Big relay controlling things such as timers for cabin lights ect). Integration relay then runs door lock motors.
                3. I noticed the integration relay was clicking whenever the central locking was misbehaving.
                4. Disconnect drivers key, drivers switch, passenger switch and rear door switch one by one to determine fault.

Now unfortunately for me I did all this, and the central locking stopped playing up.

I reconnected door locks and switches one by one, eventually I had the car back in 1 piece and the problem gone....

I dont believe I have fixed it, however it has been 'fixed' for now.

Should the problem come back I will be disconnecting the wiring from all the door locks / switches at the integration relay, (If problem still persists) Thus proving fault is with the integration relay.
