  • Difference between LANDCRUISERS and PRADOS

    Hello

OK. I am a newbie in this. Have a big laugh...

    So here is my question.
What is the difference between a PRADO and a LANDCRUISER?
I leave in Africa on the west coast and there are lots of PRADOS there. I drove one recently. It was a GX PRADO. I found the engine really slow...
I heard that LANDCRUISERS in europe have a bigger engine, with a Turbo.
I went on Toyota website but I am not a car fan and I have difficulties to understand the high technicality of it! Moreover it is written LANDCRUISERS everywhere and not PRADOS...
I noticed in Africa that the LANDCRUISER have bigger lamps on the back.

Do you know where I could find the difference between a PRADO and the LANDCRUISER?

The prado is the cheaper version to buy and run of the LC200

FJ is basicly same chasis engine

Ok but what is better with the LANDCRUISER then :?:
I am not concerned about the LC200 but more with the previous version LC100.

I found some clarification in wikipedia:
      LANDCRUISER : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_cruiser
      PRADO: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Land_Cruiser_Prado
But it is not clear enought for me ...
They talk about the PRADO 120 in the 100 LANDCRUISER page... does it mean that the landcruiser doesnt have the dual petrol tank?
      Could someone explain please?

Your you tube video is clever. Nice way to find which one is the best

Depends on where you live but both are landcruisers, often the Prado is referred to as just that or a lexus in Nth America.

Depends on what you expext of your vehicle. Both models come in a variety of models from standard (or G), GX, GXL (all available in manual or auto) and VX, Grande (in auto only).

The LC100 in basic kit was better equiped for prolonged off road use, i.e. bigger engine, stonger chassis, suspension, extra weight, bigger inside etc..... Be aware the LC100 was the last of the basic kit, the LC200 starts with the GXL. Most commercial buyers are now going the LC70 - 5 door as the prado lacks clearance and has a few too many plastic bits that don't like really rough treatment. i.e. it has velvet on the door trim and carpet on the floor instead of a hose out vinyl interior.

If you can find a LC100 without IFS (pre2002) in good condition get it.

I run a couple of prados (GXL, manual, d4d, BB, TB, winch, dual batts) as they are cheaper to buy, run, service, fix broken bits, provide higher return on sale (bought and sold in same year) and are small enough to drive in a city. Unless I have a specific need for a vehicle to do heavy prolonged off road work, finacially the prado is the way to go at this point in time.

        Have a look at
        http://www.toyota.com.au

Diffrent models carry different names in different countries. What's called a Prado in Australia is just 'Land Cruiser' in the UK and in the USA it's sold under the Lexus banner. The UK model has a 90L fuel tank (180L in Australia) and its spare is under the car, not bolted onto the back door like it is in Australia - and the USA Lexus no doubt has more refinement to warrant the Lexus badge. What we know as a Land Cruiser (100 or 200 Series) in Australia is sold as 'Land Cruiser Amazon' or 'Land Cruiser V8' in the UK... The name 'Prado' doesn't exist in the UK... etc. etc...

My point is to have a look at Toyota's web site for whatever country applies to you and go from there. Could be the same thing under a different name - or a different thing under the same name...

I assume you guys all know about the "Toyota Landcruiser Prado Review" site as below?

            http://www.dixonarchive.com/prado/default.htm

As part of the review site, the writer has done a basic comparison between the Prado and the LC200 series.

Interesting read, seems you might get a little info there jbesclapez.

You've also got this article over at Overlander.com Towing Comparison: LandCruiser v Prado v Patrol v Jackaroo v ML270 (mercedes). Gives a bit more of an idea.

              TOYOTA LAND CRUISER

Thanks to all for your helpfull answers.

I like the australian website because I found it clearer than the other toyotas website I was look at. (I was watching mainly toyota france because most of the cars where I now live in western africa are imported from France).
The thing is that some people import from other countries (US, Oz...) so it did not help me to make my mind clearer!

However the articles in Dixon archive is good also!

I am going to try a prado today. I will write down the model of the engine and come back to you... It is a second hand one: LANDCRUISER PRADO 166 D4D from August 2005 with bars on the front and "steps" on the side and only has 13000 Km. It is now sold 18 000 000 XOF which is 27400 EUR or 39 000 USD. I will try to decrease the price :-)

                LANDCRUISER

                Hi guys!

I just come back. I have tried the PRADO and the LANDCRUISER D4D 2005.

There is a HUGE gap in terms of power!!! I am not an expert as I said, but I could easily find the difference. On the D4D you press the accelerators and this powerful turbo does a great job!

The difference I saw, is on the prado you have L2, N, H2 and H4 but in the LANDCRUISER you only have L N and H. Is it a big deal? What is the difference?

Then I went to an official shop and the guy told me that even the engine of the D4D is good, it is asking lots of attention because the petrol quality in Senegal is not great, the roads are not good...

Another stupid question: What can drive the further: A PRADO with a 180 petrol tank or a LANDCRUISER D4D with a tank of 90?

                Thanks for your help?

                Nic

The Prado has a definite advantage in range due to the 180 litre tank.

There must be a reason for the low kms on the Prado, a 3 year old car would normally have around 60,000 km on it so to have only 13000 km I would be suspecting it has probably been sitting in a repair shop somewhere or it is a demo model.

jbesclapez ~ Can you please update your location (Africa somewhere - Senegal?) in your profile?

                    Is the mileage correct - 13,000km - or a typo (130,000km)?

                      LANDCRUISER

                      Hello

This LANDCRUISER has low mileage because it is mainly (if not only) used in town. And not a lot. There is nothing weird about this...

But after a did though I think I am not going to buy it because I heard that this engine is really sensitive (the D4D). And there is a lot of dust/sands everywhere....

Everybody has a PRADO has I said before and not a LANDCRUISER. There must be a reason... even if i dont really know it! It probably that the diesel engine of the PRADO is more realiable for Africa and sand...

Could be as simple as it's a bit smaller and less thirsty! i would have loved to get a 100 series but the size was the main reason for going for a prado.

The extra 20-30K extra in price was also a major factor too!

Yep, looked at some standard LC - 100's when I was shopping around. You could get one say with 40,000 on it for around $35,000. Some even had roofracks and suspension upgrades to boot. Just had to be particular about where it'd been previously. Of course you'd then have to spend more fitting it out with what you wanted. I very nearly went this way but the size was what killed the Idea. Even now I get remarks about "why I drive such a big vehicle" from friends and people at work. Not that I give a damn, but to keep the peace with the other 1/2 a Prado size was the compromise. Certainly I'd never get a lifted 100 series in the garage here at my current rental. Lifted Prado is also going to be a bit tight but the tape measure says yes. 8) Looking at the housing market here in Perth and a lot of the stuff in our price range (400 - 450K) does not have the largest of garages to say the least. Certainly I think carparks, especially multi storey ones are being increasingly designed for smaller cars. The number of times I've seen a LC in a multi storey carpark with inches to spare over the roofrack just highlights how much room there really isn't available for larger cars. Those guys could teach me a thing or two about parking in tight spaces I reckon. I was in Hobart a while ago and i have no idea how you'd get anything bigger than a commodore around some of the places they have tucked away there. With too much urban living, I think a smaller 4WD may well be the wiser choice.......... maybe. 8)

You would be surprised, I traded my 100 Series for the Prado, It had a 50mm Lovell lift all round and only sat a couple of mill higher than the prado with the same lift. I know as I have the same problem with my garage.
But your right, they are a much 'bigger' vehicle in every direction.
Saddest thing I ever saw was a new 100 Series tearing into an undercover shopping centre car park near home, young mum driving with kids in the back, going way to quick, and wedged it hard against the ceiling of the car park and some of the plumbing. Had to let all tyres down to get it out. Smashed the front windscreen and collapsed the roof.
