The 90 series must have a smaller capacity brake circuit to the 120. I bought 3 x 500ml before I changed mine and barley used 750ml.

      Re: Changing Brake Fluid

To change brake fluid I use a glass jar with two hole in lid just big enough for a tight fit for 2 vacuum hoses ( about 4mm ID). use one length about 600mm long so it fits on bleed nipple and the other long enough too go from back wheel to engine and connect to a Vacuum hose on inlet manifold. start engine and when you loosen the nipple the vacuum will suck out the fluid from wheel cylinder and lines from resiviour and into jar ( sort of like those jars they use in hospitals for draining fluids) . Just keep going until clear fluid flows into jar remembering to keep topping up fluid in master cylinder. Close nipple and move onto next wheel.
If youve got a diesel replace the hose to manifold with one of those syringes that you use for sucking out oil from gearbox's to make the vacuum.
Works realy well on clutch systems as well

I'm due for the next brake fluid flush and I noticed that the colour of the fluid in the reservoir is the same as that in the bottle (Toyota genuine DOT 3). Now how am I supposed to know when the new fluid has gone through?

Reading back through this thread regarding the reservoir capacity, it looks like mine is 1L as I drew out 500mL and only got half of it out. It then got dark too quickly as I had a hard time loosening the bleeder valve. So I poured in a new bottle to bring it back to level which was when I noticed that the colour was still the same - lightish brown like very diluted apple juice.

Don't you use a straw to suck the old fluid out like the rest of us?

Yes but the old fluid is still in the lines while the new is in the reservoir. How do I know how much to bleed if I can't tell the colour change?

I usually remove all the fluid out of the reservoir. I then re-fill it and commence bleeding each wheel individually, topping up the reservoir as I go until the fluid coming out the bleeder looks nice and clean. Reminds me, I have to do a fluid change on the wife's Hyundai - it's perfectly black so seeing the colour change should be easy.

Andrew, with your grande I assume it has the accumulator master cyl.
It has a large capacity & would expect you to use 1.5lt at least to give it a good flush.
Good point regarding colour, usually you can still spot the difference when it comes through.
In general blue fluids tend to go a bit green.
& clear or yellow, tend to go a bit dark, so it should come out looking a bit lighter.
Other than that if you still can't see it you can estimate or overestimate & just give it a good bleed.
If you do the rears first , as you do, by the time you get I the fronts you should have the newest fluid coming through.

I Alternate between PBR dot 3 (blue) & burson or Toyota dot 3 (both yellow I think).

                    Changing is a good idea.
Didn't want to go there as many BELEIVE you must use Toyota dot3

I use Lubrimax dot4 blue have for 15 years, it's compatible & supercedes & overrides all dot3 even Honda "must use genuine Honda" lol...... That's another argument, but Lubrimax has never had a customer with an issue & when I questioned them about it they said no problem. I've never had any issues.
I can pick my new blue coming through easy every time even after only a year or so, it must fade a bit.

Ok, maybe because the light was fading, I couldn't notice the slight difference in shade. Will try again on the weekend with fresh eyes.

I now have 5 bottles of brake fluid equating to 2.5L - to be sure. The reservoir really does hold quite a bit.

It's like beer, each has it's own shade of amber.

I have my 200k service due and I'll be doing most of it, I think the pads are OK but I need to change the fluid, is this process basically the ye old, pump-pump-loosen nipple- flush - tighten nipple technique? I havent done that since my Peugeot 504! thought it would have changed by now..

Basically, yes. Don't forget to suck out as much old fluid in the reservoir first before filling up with new fluid. I bought a little one man brake fluid kit from Supercheap which means that you don't have to loosen and tighten the nipple repeatedly.
