  • Changing Brake Fluid

Yesterday for the first time, I changed the brake fluid on the Prado. I used 500ml of Toyota DOT 3 stuff. In hindsight I think it would have been more appropriate to have used 2 x 500ml containers of fluid because the cpacity of the braking system seems quite large. What do other members think?

    Regards

I would have used 2 containers, i changed the fluid on our corolla last week and used 2 containers. The first container didnt go very far i was thankful i bought 2. I coould have done it with probobly 1 and a half but i dont keep or store brake fluid so i flushed some more till i had used up the 2 container. At least this way i know the old fluid was definitely flushed through. This was the way i did/do it. Im sure there are many ways of doing it and people have there own ways of doing things.
    Cheers

I done mine a while back and I ended using three 500mls of dot3. I might of got away with two but like steve said I don't store opened brake fluid so I ended using the whole lot. Anyway $7.50 a container is not expensive so I will use the same amount in two years time.

        Hi all

Toyota got my baby to play with this week. The 40,000k service. I let them near my baby for 2 reasons. The first is that I wanted to notify them of the D4D "death rattle" that I, thankfully, don't have. The second is that pumping brake fluid with your wife in the car and saying "UP - DOWN" gets a bit monotonous. Also, I don't have a hand oil pump to fill the diffs and transfer box. Letting them near my car was basically an insurance policy in case something goes wrong further down the track.
They used 500ml of brake fluid using a "vacuum" system. I guess from reading your comments that means that ALL of the fluid was not replaced. When I questioned the small amount, the service manager said that the pipes have a narrow bore. Hmmm.

        Cheers - John

John no matter what system you use to replace the brake fluid the amount that needs to be replace will not changed but its interesting how these service managers answer the most simpliest of questions. I ask them once why they are not going to change the oil filter with my 15,000 k service :? , answer- these oil filters get changed every 10,000 and are not recommended to be changed every 5000 because the filter is designed to work better the longer its in.

I start on the rear first and finish on the front driver side. The first one is the rear passenger side.

No problems Rusty and thats another way of saying it , start from the furtherest from the reservoir and finish with the nearest. 8)

I'm looking at doing the 120,000km service myself and would like to flush the brake lines. Can someone give a step by step guide? It looks like I will need an assistant for this job.

                            Re: Changing Brake Fluid

They suck out what's in the reservior using a suction pump, fill in new fluid then pump the new fluid through each caliper to flush the old fluid out of each caliper and pipework.

I tried to do mine the same way but the reservior alone took 450ml. Each caliper would probably hold about 50ml and there's be some in the ABS unit so I'm sure how they get away with only using 500mL of fluid.

I had 3x500mL brake fluid bottles and used all of it during the brake fluid flush Nika helped me do. Apparently Prados with ABS has a bigger reservoir?
