  • Replace Thrust Bearing?

    Hi everyone,

Of late I am getting concerned about the thrust/throw out bearing. In the mornings when you start up when the car is cold all seems fine for a minute or so, then a very loud noise starts up. (Kind of like a vibrating bearing - rather then just a dry bearing noise). Anyway its pretty loud and easily heard in the cab with windows up etc. Obviously car is not in gear at this stage. If you put your foot on the clutch then noise goes away - hence why I think its the thrust bearing. If you start to drive the noise is less noticeable but still there for a period of time until things warm up down there. After about 3 - 5 min driving (Or 5-8min idling in the garage) the noise will go away. But if you put your head right down near the box you can still hear the faintest noisy bearing sound.

Anyway the points im not sure about are: - and please remember im not too clear on how all the box goes together..

    * In Neutral - shouldn't this bearing be Inactive? so why the noise?
    * Why when the car / box is warm the noise is not present ?

Im guessing that the clutch is not fully disengaging and the bearing is just touching on the spring ? When it warms up the bearing has better contact with the springs /fingers and quietens down a bit ???? - just speculation as im not exactly sure how it works..

Anyway if anyone has some idea's I'm keen to hear them. Id rather not have to pull the box apart to replace the bearing as there would be no point in not replacing the clutch at the same time... 90K on it now.

Can I adjust the clutch to "release" more - if indeed the bearing is still just touching on the clutch spring?

Finally - should I try to grease up something via that inspection point I seem to remember someone on here talking about. I think you need mirrors etc to get in there ?

    Thanx in advance

    Tim

    Hi Tim

The clutch presure plate is always spinning @ engine rpm irrespective of what gear you are in. Bearings once they have some wear in them, can have play in them causing them to vibrate, but can expand when warm and lessen the vibration, also the grease in the bearing dries out, but improves once warm. The pressure increasing on the bearing from the warming clutch could also lessen the noise.

Not sure if you can grease the bearing, most are "sealed" units. Sealed enough so you can't service them, (but not sealed enough to stop water and dirt getting in and damaging them).

Not sure if you can 'deadjust' the clutch (most hydrulic clutches have no adjustment, some cables do, I have an Auto Prado so not sure what toyota run), and if you were to adjust more freeplay into the clutch I think you'd introduce more noises.

Hopefully someone will have some experience with this in their Prado, but most problems I've encounted with throw out bearings require replacement.

      Hi Tkstrong,
My 6 speed gearbox is also a bit noisy in neautral, in neutral with the foot off the clutch most of the noise you will hear is the thrust bearing and gearbox input shaft rotating, it makes a whiring and clattering sound I was initially a little worried but not now as I have heard a couple more and they sound the same. My previous 4wd's all manuals were also noisy in neautral but not as loud as the PRADO.
If the noises are worrying you get your Toyota Mech to have a listen it is easy to spot a worn thrust bearing or spigot bush after listening to dozens of them.
      Hope this helps a little

The infamous thrust bearing. I am on my second thrust bearing after 120000km. I had it replaced at 60000km under warranty and then just this week out of warranty. Prado is under 3 years old so seems to be a 60000km replacement item. Dealer informed me that is was quite common and most people just put up with the noise. However I think the noise is annoying and hence have had it fixed twice. In my opinion if it is not noisy when you bought it then it should not be noisy under normal operation and in my case is a recurring fault.

          Re: Replace Thrust Bearing?

          Hi
I'm about to change out my 6speed RA61F gearbox due to noises and replace the clutch as well at the same time . I have done some research about the thrust bearing and transmission due to the fact I spent $2800 at a Toyota dealership trying fix the problem but still have the noise in the gearbox not to mention the clutch. This is what I've found out.....

"The chirping / wine / whirl noise caused by the throwout/release bearing is caused by a simple engineering issue. The bell housing is made out of aluminium and the bearing is made out of steel. With time the bearing will always cause gouges and marks in the pilot shaft that will cause the chirping and noise issues.

Replacing the transmission is always nice.... but again the parts are the same and the issue will come back."
          Toyota Doesn't have a fix.
Toyota will try to replace your bearing and pressure plate and 'polish' the pilot shaft but it will not help. The issue will come back again.
Toyota will replace the bell housing (because the pilot shaft on the new transmissions is not a replaceable part) this will help but the issue will come back later on down the road because it is the same part.

Here is the fix for those with thrust bearing problems... go to this site I called the owner of the engineering workshop who said they have sold over 7500 for Toyota's www.pdmusa1.com for those who are about to change out the thrust bearing it maybe worth having a look

Hey guys, Im new here and just taking a look around... I am having the same issues with my Prado that I only bought second hand recently. After about a week the god awful rubbing/squeaking/hard-to-explain noise started. Aftfer taking only of the guards off the gearbox and putting pressure on the clutch fork the noise goes away, otherwise its constantly there... dont exactly dissapear after a few minutes either - it just goes and goes and goes and drives me absolutely insane.

I was going to just take it in to my usual toyota mechanic but figured I would investigate more to look into it.

Has anyone else used the solution that NZKIWI has posted quite a while ago?? Or are there any other solutions? Just looking for a more permanant fix to the problem...

              Cheers!!

                Re: Replace Thrust Bearing?

Just a update...had the gearbox and clutch changed out and fitted the thrust bearing mod from http://pdmusa1.com/ The mod has changed the feel of the clutch totally it now engages and disengages so smooth it's fluid like motion while depressing and releasing the clutch and fixed the noise caused by the thrust bearing on the input shaft.
The guys who fitted the new thrust bearing mod had never seen the mod before but commented on how something so simple fixes the problem and ask why hasn't Toyota come up with this mod instead of giving you a new clutch and thrust bearing which will result in the same failure down the road.
This mod was money well spent and would recommend it to other members cost of the mod was $240 including shipping. Any questions just PM me

                Regards NZKIWIS

                  does not exist any more...

I'm interested myself, and will probably go ahead with this mod when my clutch is due for replacement.

OK - so which part do we need for an OZ V6 with a 6-speed manual box?

The two different parts, mentioned in the above sites are:

                            1. REPLACES TOYOTA # 31230-60230 used in the 2005+ Tacoma V6 the 6-Speed Transmission.

                            or

                            2. REPLACES TOYOTA # 31230-60240 used in the FJ Cruiser and the 2005-2006 Tundra V6 with the 6-Speed Transmission.

                            Anyone?

I've had the same problem/noise with my Diesel, started to get worse last week, was going to take it in next week. Don't know if it's related (assume it is) but Last night had the pedal drop away and nothing, reached down and popped it back out and wouldn't go back in. Towed it to the shop last night and waiting for them to take a look at it.

Dreading what it's going to cost, when your 4X4 rocks up on a flat bed they've got you.
