Hi everyone,
Of late I am getting concerned about the thrust/throw out bearing. In the mornings when you start up when the car is cold all seems fine for a minute or so, then a very loud noise starts up. (Kind of like a vibrating bearing - rather then just a dry bearing noise). Anyway its pretty loud and easily heard in the cab with windows up etc. Obviously car is not in gear at this stage. If you put your foot on the clutch then noise goes away - hence why I think its the thrust bearing. If you start to drive the noise is less noticeable but still there for a period of time until things warm up down there. After about 3 - 5 min driving (Or 5-8min idling in the garage) the noise will go away. But if you put your head right down near the box you can still hear the faintest noisy bearing sound.
Anyway the points im not sure about are: - and please remember im not too clear on how all the box goes together..
* In Neutral - shouldn't this bearing be Inactive? so why the noise?
* Why when the car / box is warm the noise is not present ?
Im guessing that the clutch is not fully disengaging and the bearing is just touching on the spring ? When it warms up the bearing has better contact with the springs /fingers and quietens down a bit ???? - just speculation as im not exactly sure how it works..
Anyway if anyone has some idea's I'm keen to hear them. Id rather not have to pull the box apart to replace the bearing as there would be no point in not replacing the clutch at the same time... 90K on it now.
Can I adjust the clutch to "release" more - if indeed the bearing is still just touching on the clutch spring?
Finally - should I try to grease up something via that inspection point I seem to remember someone on here talking about. I think you need mirrors etc to get in there ?
Thanx in advance
Tim
