  • New 5 speed Auto stuck in Park

Got May 08 5 speed auto went to take out of park would not budge. Rang Toyota they said press hold shift lock and see if it moves which I did and it went into drive. They informed me there must be a problem with the shift lock switch. It was already booked in for it's first free service this thursday when they will have a look at it.

Just thought I would post in case someone else has the same problem in the future.

Every time we put it in park now we have to press and hold shift lock to get it into drive until its fixed.

    All best

Have you had the console apart recently ??

There's a tiny little wire connector, that goes onto the shift lock switch, that controls a small lockout lever and requires the power to be on (and the engine running) for the shifter to be able to be operated. Perhaps this has come off.

    Cheers
    Chippy

I experienced the same problem when I hired a dodgy trailer. The faulty trailer wiring put a short circuit on the Prado's brake light circuit causing a 10A fuse to blow. When this blows, the electrical interlock to the automatic transmission selector does not work and you can't get the selector out of park.

      Regards
      Glenn

As the vehicle ages, the next culprit will be the foot brake switch. Granted, most brake switches never fail (otherwise you would see more cars pull to a stop but their brake lights are not on) but it can and does happen.

Had the exact same thing happen to me this morning. Hooked up a mate's trailer and couldn't get out of park. Could not work out what the hell had happened.

Jumped on old faithful Pradopoint after getting tired of pressing the shift lock button and found this thread. Checked the fuse and she was cooked. New fuse, no dramas.

Thanks for the help lads. Pradopoint saves the day once again 8)

            Cheers,
            AJ

Great site, great people, great car.

I could start a whole new debate here, "what else does a bloke need"?

              Now watch what happens

This exact same thing happened to me on weekend. Just about to book into get it looked at and thought I'd check out Prado Point first. Very happy I don't need a new transmission etc as have just come back from The Cape where it was tested more than usual.
                Well done Prado Point!

Happened to me last Saturday. Trailer lead got pinched in the over-rider brake mech and shorted the lead. Replace the brake fuse ... all good. Had me thinking .... if you were to cover over or disguise the shift lock button, and wire a hidden switch before or after the fuse, you would have a transmission lock that may deter some low-life that may have his eyes on your rig.
                  Just a thought.
