    Re: Transmission oil cooler

I've just returned from a trip to WA, we did 18,000Km with a 2000Kg Supreme Getaway van on the back we did the Gibb River Road and 320Km up to Mitchell Falls, Auto performed faultlessly, when travelling slower shifted to 3 to lock up converter at 70Kph. Did lots of towing with the old 90 Series V6 Auto never had any probs with either 300+k's

      Ray,

Do you have a transmission cooler or not?

        Re: Transmission oil cooler

No trans cooler added, ran this by local dealer with my old 90 series and he said there is a warning light for Auto temp, never seen it come on.
As i stated I try to keep auto in lock-up when towing by shifting to 3rd at lower speeds (70 Kph on Gibb River Rd) I've noticed that lock-up occurs at about 82 Kph in top and will stay locked untill below 75 Kph

          Re: Transmission oil cooler

Just revisiting this topic and after reading through the posts, I noticed that the early diesel's don't have an external trans oil cooler but petrol's do. Is it because all the petrol's were a 5 speed auto whereas the early diesel's were a 4 speed auto?

I am aware I may have answered my own question here...

            Re: Transmission oil cooler

The D4D which has the 5 speed doesn't have an external transmission oil cooler either.
I think the reasoning is that the extra bottom end torque of the diesel would allow the convertor to be locked up earlier hence reducing the amount of heat produced.
The fact that the 150 D4Ds have had the transmission shift points remapped which has resulted in more slip and some overheating issues shows it is a fairly fine line before an external cooler is required.

I have installed an aftermarket (PWR) transmission oil cooler and temp gauge on my 120 D4D Auto.

              Re: Transmission oil cooler

Can anyone suggest a size for a (PWR ) transmission oil cooler for my 09 D4D auto.
Is it better to over size a liitle?
Thankyou in advance to any suggestions.

                Re: Transmission oil cooler

well it was time to replace my auto transmition oil cooler to bigger one with elctric fan , bought from usa , didn't come with a switch , bought also from usa

below are couple of photos , forgot to take one after finishing it was dark sorry will do soon.

so far it is ok, i like the elctric fan , incase things went hot, and i was afraid that the cooler will block the radiator, which it didn't water temp. hasn't changed on the scan gauage ,

next either get the scan gauage to read transm. oil temp or get a seprate gauage

Looking into this myself so firing this thread back up.

It appears my trans oil got a little warm when towing to Brissy from Sydney last week. Not seen the 'overheat' lights but given I wasn't working that hard on the foot and the weather was cool there is a reasonable potential to overheat on a bad day. Data was gained from the intelligent tester tool to indicate the recient trans heating history was not ideal. I tow an off-road camper and had a kayak on the roof, the day was very windy and caused a fair amount of wind drag on the rig. I was shifting down on the hills to 4th and not being overly aggressive on the throttle, so surprised it got hot at all? Perhaps it was the 'age' of the oil?

The Prado has done 90,000km and we've just worked out that Toyota haven't changed the trans fluid in any services we can see. I'm getting the oil flushed with ########## on Saturday and he has some options for Aussie made coolers. Once I have another chat with Roo I'll post the planed trans cooler specs here for others to compare. Estimated costs were ~$300.00 fitted, so IMHO it's worth the added piece of mind running an external trans cooler I think.

Even with my extra tranny cooler fitted she will still run 3 or 4 degrees hotter pulling in 5th as opposed to 4th, no matter how flat the road.

                        Thanks Roo, that was helpful.

I've purchased the cooler from SCA now. Popped the bonnet and didn't realise before that it looks like there's an existing mini-cooler in there. Is that what I'm looking at? Or is this something else? Don't worry, I'm going to get a mate who's actually installed these before to help me, I'm just learning here

Haha I could have guessed it would have been better Would you replace the genuine or just add the 678 in-line with it? Also the 678 said 4.2L and above engines (I have the 4L 120). It won't OVER-cool the transmission oil in normal driving conditions will it?

Sorry to bug, any guidance here if I should replace or put inline? And the 678 DEFINITELY ok for the 4.0L 120? What is a good gauge I can install? Found a post on here called DIY AutoMeter but the initial post (by pradogxlv6) with all the details is missing

Ended up mounting the cooler this week. Haven't plumbed it yet - getting the auto flushed in the next few weeks so will wait til then and get it done at the same time. Anyway, a bunch of M6 nuts and bolts to utilise the threaded holes already in the chassis, some various sized steel plates for the harder to reach places, as many washers as I could find, a hacksaw and some loctite and it's solidly installed. Will let the auto mechanic help me decide whether to run this in-series with the smaller Toyota one already in there or replace it entirely.

I had a transmission cooler fitted by 4WD Systems at Holden Hill. It's a 30,000 BTU cooler - they suggested this size, which I thought might have been overkill but it still came in cheaper with fitting than what Toyota quoted so I figured I'd go for it so I'd finally have something that was big ... and ... functional ... wait ..

It goes pretty much right across the entire radiator mounts and about a 1/3 - 1/2 of it fits in behind the fan which is perfect. Driving around town the scangauge shows tranny temps anywhere from 70 - mid 80's. Haven't seen it go higher than that since it's been on. I'll be heading to Loveday 4WD park in the next week or two - so will be able to do a comparison. Last year on the dunes the transmission temps got up to 120 (40 degree day and no cooler fitted) before i noticed and stopped for a break - so i'll see what it gets to this year as a direct comparison.
