I was fitting an ARB rack last night, using a 6mm allen key, on the short side without a spanner for leverage, just a rag to grip it better. One of the bolts felt a bit like was stripped, but not sure if I have over-tightened it. The threads have a blue coloured loctite on them, which may have gone hard and damaged the thread when installing the bolt.

The instructions say 22 N/m, which is pretty tight - I think tighter than I could get by hand using the small side of the allen key. I did both sides, but now am thinking I might pull both sides off, check everything and wire brush the loctite off and put some new stuff on.

Can anyone remember how tight their bolts were, and if there were any problems? Thanks Todd

        • After finding a few cheaper 2nd hand ARB deluxe racks about I decided to get one...

only to find out the Prado's take a completely different rack... DOH!!

so its a long shot but does anyone have any idea or experience fitting a 1850 x 1250 Patrol GU ARB Rack? im guessing the mount points are the wrong distance?
can anyone measure the space between where the brackets mount on the 120 for me?

I haven't bought the mounting kit yet as I may have to sell the rack! cheers!

          thanks in advance!

          • Djd I have the mounting kit I changed to suit a Jaram rack. Can you measure the location of the holes in the rack and I will see if they line up. Best post a pic of the rack and mark the holes.

The slots are 10mm wide and 60 long to ends of the slot, so 50mm. The slots are at 40mm centres apart.

The front pair of slots are 670mm in front of the centre pair and the rear pair is 705mm further back. Front slots to rear slots 1375mm centre to centre.

Bear in mind the front and rearmost slots don't exist on mine.

            • With the GU Patrol being a gutter mount, the ARB roof rack would have equi-distance between the mounting points. This makes it totally incompatible with the Prado's fitting kit. This is because the Prado's mounting points are not equal distant front to back and it tapes in from front to back.

The rack for the Patrol would also be much wider than that for the Prado.

              • Look up the size of the Patrol rack on the ARB site. As Andrew said if it is made for gutter mount only then the mounts won't come in far enough. The ARB fitting kit bolt points aren't as uneven as the roof mounts themselves on the Prado.

                As per these pics

                    G'day all
I'll try to post again. Managed to fail twice already!!
I'm a new member and have been reading through all these posts. It's been really good to see that I'm not the only guy that procrastinates over these issues.
I did end up deciding on an ARB deluxe aluminium roof basket for my 2008 120 GXL.
I was stalking pradopoint for a while for information as I don't use the computer a lot but with such a treasure trove of information I joined up and might try to get some computer lessons from the wife( or just go trial and error).
So I was wondering if this post actually works ,FC might be able to share his ARB a bull bar fitting instructions as I have already fitted my roof rails and now aquired a bull bar second hand.
                    Fingers crossed
                    Cheers
                    Clint
