I guess my main concerns would be weight and ease with which you could remove it when it wasn't needed.
Hi IRON-PAWW. I don't intend on ever removing mine... and don't think it is recommended with the ARB roof racks. If you want something you can lift off and add from time to time, IMO the ARB roof rack probably isn't the way to go.
Of course, there is a weight difference here to some of the alloy alternatives. But I mainly chose the ARB roofrack as I was very happy the one I had on my previous 4wd and also like its strength and durability. The mesh cage, in my view, really adds to its capability and strength too.
I also like how low the ARB roof rack sits on the Prado. I also think it really tops off the looks of the Prado too.. just my opinion, of course. 8)
I'll add some photos of how it is joined to the rails a little later this arvo. Cheers...
i like the look of the arb rack except for the size... arb makes the 3/4 size rack for landcruiser but have not got them for prado....
i have been to one 4x4 supplier who is going to make a rack to my specs with the mesh floor and powder coat it black with spotty fittings for about a grand....have seen it and looks awsome...cant wait!

Kevin, what is left on the Prado after you have removed the rack..... have you got the same fitting system as ntpryce?
If the only the basket is taken off then the ARB "rails" can stay in place. They look a bit dorky so when I am planning to take the rack off for an extended period, I take the ARB rails off and put back the original Toyota rack mounts that were used on models without the factory roof rails (I hope that makes sense).
Cheers,
Kevin

I haven't I have any pic's with just the rails on. I am at work in PNG at the moment so if you can wait a couple of weeks I will take some pic's when I get home.

I take my ARB rack off when i'm not using it, and I just leave the mounting rails on. I think it looks fine
Just remember the more times you take the rails on and off, the more chance you have of damaging the threads in the roof.

Cheers... but I'm happy to leave mine up top. In any case, I've really got nowhere to store the thing anyway. We regularly find a use for the roof rack even when we're not traveling. 8)

I'm currently looking at buying a house, as we rent at the moment. Very few of the houses In my price range have a garage or car port roof high enough to accommodate a lifted Prado with roof rack. So I'm going to need to be able to remove it easily. I guess that means it needs to be light enough for two people to lift up there and strong enough to carry a bit of gear. I wouldn't be loading it up too much. Maybe another spare tyre, some jerry cans, and a large toolbox I can fit tents, gas bottles, and other bits into. Haven't seen a Rhino rack fitted Prado yet to look at, but the purchase is a bit down the list right now anyway.

ntpryce, How hard will it be to clean under the rack? The water we have up here is not real flash and really needs to be chamoised off each time the car has a bath. I was keen on the ARB bar but having seen yours now and how it is fitted i am not so sure any more.
There is not much room at all under the rack. You'd need to use a chamois on a pole or something like that to properly clean/dry underneath the roof rack.
Not impossible, but a bit of a hinderance when cleaning. We managed to work around it with our last 4wd and saw this as a minor inconvenience for the benefits the rack provided to us.

I can't keep a roof rack fitted as the car park at work is only 2m and I just scrape in with the OE rails fitted. I only need to throw my tent up there so I bought the Toyota OE (Rhino) cross bars, Rhino platform rack and bag. Doesn't take that long to fit/take off.
