  • ARB Bar chipped n rusty. 1 month old, not been off-road yet!

Had a coulour matched Deluxe bullbar fitted to my 120-Series about a month ago. Haven't been off-road or even on a dirt road yet, but I today noticed a chunky chip of paint missing from the front with rust already settling in!!!

How the hell is this supposed to take any off-roading where rocks and gravel will inevitably be bouncing off it?!?! I thought these were supposed to be powder coated underneath in any case for extra 'toughness'... I am sure as hell gonna call ARB tomorrow as this is pretty poor form... I have a winch, 2" lift, snorkel and dual-battery system on my shopping list and they were all going to come from ARB, but now I'm not so sure...

How are other people's colour matched bar going?

Yup, this happened to my previous colour coded bar. The paint is not as tough as the powder coat. They are not powder coated underneath. My powder coated black bar on the Mav is as tough as nails. I contemplated not colour coding the bar on my new Prado but in the end decided to get it done.

I bought it under the impression there was a powder coat under the paint...

Their website says the following about deluxe bars - "Optional two-pack oven baked paint finish provides a smart and durable finish"

      Durable...? My arse...

Just get some touch up paint and dab a bit on the offending chip with a cotton bud

Yep, I hear you mate - and I do have some colour matched paint from before, but in my mind that is not the issue. I shuldn't have to! If I do this every time I get a chip, at this rate the whole damn thing's gonna have paint dabs all over it. How the hell is it gonna cope with going bush... Grrr... Well p1ssed off...

The irony is that I was going to call ARB tomorrow for some prices, but the conversation will now be "please explain..."

ARB can't do anything, that's the way it is with a 2pac finish

I'm led to believe tht they have to strip off the powder coat before they apply 2 pac... Maybe they aren't compatable with each other.

Also the colour matching is sub contracted out, ARB don't acually do it.

Is it a chip? or is the paint flaking off?? If it's flaking take it back!!

Powedercoatiing is standard, i.e. no extra charge. It was my understanding the colour matched paint was applied over the powdercoat for extra durability.

I cannot see why you couldn't apply paint over a powdercoat. The paint is not flaking - it's a chip, but fairly big, espcially considering I haven't even had a chance to take it off-road yet. More or less round and maybe 7-10mm in diameter and yellow/brown with rust already!

Fair do's - if that's how it is then that's how it is. All that aside, I've got two grand's worth of bullbar - one month old - never been off-road or on a gravel/dirt road - and it's chipped, plus rusting. In layman's terms, that's crap.

Once I rediscover my usually robust sense of humour I shall write a seong about this. At the moment it would be blues in D-minor!!! :?

ARB bars are only powercoated when you pay the extra for it to be colour coded. That was my experience when I purchased the bar 2 years ago. Did you purchase the bar from ARB store or from an non ARB outlet which retails their gear?
