Again my compliments on your work.
Please let us know the finished produce and if you have any plans to replicate. I have a 120 so may or my not fit the bill?

    • It's getting on this thread, so I am wondering if anyone out there who has made their table would do anything different now that some of you have had the table for a few years? How are the hinges holding up?

I'm hoping to give this a shot next weekend.

Has anyone used something like checker plate or similar? We had a cold down table in our old camper with carpet on top and found it wasn't terribly higienic
So, any comment from the wise?

      • Yep. Will probably try and take the carpet off the top and sand the glue off. Then put a coat of lacquer on instead.

            • Got the table done a while back, thanks to all the tips and tricks on this thread !! Great work!

A few things I did different were:

              - glued some left over vinyl flooring to the table to waterproof and protect. Just moulded, glued and stapled on the edges

              - I used a single strap to span the whole table, to try and reduce any sag, and also avoid extra connections to the table

              Hope this helps someone!

I put carpet on the underside so that it would blend in when folded up and I got a composite board from Bunnings (nylon centre, aluminium on both sides) to put on the top so it could be wiped down easily. 12mm ply for the centre and then wrapped the edges with rubber strap from Clark Rubber. Couldn't get the exact width I wanted so after it was glued on I cut it to size with a sharp knife.
Removed the plastic from the door and all of the screws were run into bits of wood to give it a bit more strength, also the screws for the support straps were run into the steel of the door itself.

Bit of a combination of everybody elses ideas really. Thanks heaps guys!

I know it's an old thread but couldn't help saying thanks.
                  Hey Mate
                  that looks great
i went into Bunnings to ask for the same thing ( composite board )and got the usual dumb look and then "we don't carry anything like that"

do you remember what it's actual name is or an item number?
what sizes did it come in ? as i have another idea for it as well

                  cheers James

                  • Hi James,

Can't remember what it was called but will be going to Bunnings over the next couple of days and will find out what I can for you.

                    Cheers,
                    Stu.

                      • Some more pics of my build...

As I spend a lot of the time fishing on the beach, I wanted to make sure the tabletop was well protected from salt water (my livie bucket tends to slosh around a bit on the back shelf!) so I decided on covering the table in two part epoxy resin called Bote Cote from a local mob down in Logan (Brisbane, Qld). As recommended, I used three coats including a first primer coat. I did get a bit of cloudiness in the end result, so the wood colour isn't as clear as I think it could have been? Otherwise I'm pretty pleased with the final product and ended up with a very thick, hard and shiny finish that should take a bit of punishment.

                        • And some more...

Home made stainless steel brackets with welded M5 bolts to attach stainless wire rope to the tailgate and stainless steel backing plates that i used to rivet the hinges into at back of tailgate panel.

I also used Gemlux friction stainless steel hinges to offer a bit of resistance and help stop the tabletop falling down uncontrollably. A bit of overkill really!

                          • And then some more...

I made a couple of stainless steel plates with M5 nuts welded to them which I shaped and riveted to the inside skin of the tailgate. These were used to screw the M5 eye bolts into and made for very strong anchor points.

                            • But wait, there's more...!

I chose to use stainless steel wire rope and affix short of the length of the table and below the top of the rear panel so the stays would be less obtrusive offering more room to move. I also used stainless adjustable balustrade fixings to allow for some adjustment if needed.
