    Cheers for that mate.

Did as you said and going well so far. Got a Haynes manual now and you were bang on 9nm ;-)

    • HI Everyone,

Thanks again for all the valuable info, there is so much great stuff on here.

Have recently purchased a late 06 D4D Prado and unfortunately have started to notice the dreaded white smoke on start up. Funnily enough, in my cars particular case it seems to be worse after being off for 2 - 4 hours rather than if it has been a couple of days or all night, not sure if there's anything in that or if it's just coincidence.

My understanding from what i have read on here is that my problem is most likely caused either by bad injectors, or injector seals. So dumped the oil, and sure enough there was some build up on the oil pick up screen. pulled the sump off and cleaned it, all back together now running fine.

I have bought a techstream and checked the injector values this morning with the following results. Seems odd that one of them actually gets worse when warm, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming i need to do a full set of injectors and seals, but would just like to confirm that my issue is that before i start getting quotes.

      Thanks Heaps in advance!

      Cheers Jake.

      • You have leaking copper seats/sheets.
        Your injectors are flogged out.
New injectors & pipes, seals & gaskets, egr clean & plate due.
Then you will be good to go for many years.

        • Varying compressions can cause rattles.

          Hey crew,

Anybody getting their injectors done, it's a big job & while you are at it, it's time to give the engine a health check.
If your spending some coin to keep the beast heathy, you may as well do it right.
If your trying to fix a rattle, check it out properly. Don't wonder why..........

1.) While the injectors are out insert Inspection camera & check the pistons, normal pitting is ok, mainly looking for cracks.
2.) check the valve clearances. Know what's acceptable & adjust only if necessary.
3.) compression test, using the new special tool makes the job easy.

This thread is mainly about the compression test.
To do a compression test normally, a fair bit of work needs to be done to remove the glow plugs usually, it costs hundreds.

Now it can be done accurately & easily while the injectors are out.
          The procedure:

          Remove injectors

If the ports are dirty, clean them

          I use a 16mm dowel

          With strips of rag

Used & port is clean enough for now.

          Like so

Drop a sheet/seal in the port, look I can't even see it, but it's there, make sure it's sitting flat

Put some lubricant on the o-rings, engine oil will do, you can see the product I use

Grab your dummy injector, special tool or tools, I use 4 for efficiency, place them in the ports.

Make sure the tool is set square & well clear of the camshafts. Like below.

Not like this, see the camshaft may hit the tool, bad news!

Torque them down to 20nm (injector torque spec is 22nm) 20 is fine for this test.

          Continued next post.........

          • Connect your compression tester, I have multiple, it's a quality assurance thing, I like to have other units to compare results.

Make sure they are all secured & everything is clear of any turning parts, eg; camshafts & crank.
            Record readings.
Swap compression testers around if you like a second or 3rd opinion, it only takes an extra minute.
Once your happy, remove injector clamps, remove special tool, don't forget to pick up the sheets/seals if they did not stay in the bottom of the tool, they do about half the time.

I use a little pick with a bend like below

Make sure you have your 4 sheets/seals before going any further.

Then carry on with the injector replacement job.

Thankx for reading, I hope you like it.

            Cheers,

            ####.

            • Very nice. Are those dummy injectors a commercially made part or could you modify old injectors?

                Hey Dave,

You could mod an old injector, a bit of messing tound with plugs & fittings.
but these are purpose built, just screw your usual glow plug adaptor 10x1.25 into the top. So easy for $89ea ( I think)
I think a set of 4 is even cheaper.

                • Well, it finally happened. Just over 90k and lost an injector. Actually thought it was running a lot better since Toyota went over it a little while back. Guess I was wrong, the joys of a D4D!

                    What year is it? Please?

Might need a compression test? Popped a piston? Or lucky & just a dean injector?

                    • 2007 model ####. I'm hoping I havnt popped a piston, not sure yet. Car went dead, then was able to run for a little bit (drove it about 50m to mechanic) not blowing any smoke or anything. Could I have been lucky? Have not got the diagnosis from mechanic yet...

An 07 with 90k injectors likely be just out of range or worse,
Did it have the recall completed? Copper.......?

                        Could be lucky!

                        • Yep, recall done about a year ago, had the copper seats. Hopefully fingers crossed damage isn't too detrimental.

I think i remember it, I probably said things like, don't let them touch it & replace the Injectors also as they are old.
Ahh well it won't take an expert long to work out whats going on & sort it out.
                            Who's got the vehicle?

Edit: back on post 2111, & others we talked about it.
the reccomendations & warnings are quite serious.

Hopefully it's just an Injector & not permanent engine damage.

Feel free to contact me if you would lie to discuss it.

                            • Great thanks ####, local diesel guy has it. Am pretty fuming at Toyota at the moment, can't believe they just won't/didn't take responsibility for something that is clearly there wrong doing.

                              • If its not blowing smoke its a good sign.

Make sure they do a compression test for peace of mind.
