  • What a difference the new injectors have made. I didn't think there was a rattle, and I thought I hadn't lost any power but I was wrong. The engine is now quitter than the missus' 1.5 litre and and the kids have commented on how smooth the car feels. Wish I had done it a bit earlier now.

Also replaced the clutch which is now incredibly light - although the friction point on releasing the clutch is very close to the full press, maybe 1-2cm up. Does anyone know if this is normal or can be adjusted? And I have a noise when I turn the ignition to the ON position. Used to get it for 1-2secs before but now it is running continuously. Poked my head in the engine bay and I think it might be coming from the starter motor but my mechanical skills are about as a good as my magic powers so will head back to the shop in the morning and ask them to have a look for me.

    Cheers

I like doing Injector jobs, because customers love it afterwards. It's really good you had them changed.

That sounds about normal with the clutch.
Turbo noise is normal also. Whenever key is on.

Thanks mate - that's the response I hoped to hear as I roll out of Canberra on the way to Brisbane.

It really is like driving a new car 😃

        • These figures explain the cold start rattle I get when she is under load...Cold start test reveals: (#1 1.4) (#2 -.05) (#3 3.1) (#4 1.2). Now do i go with the BDI or Genuine Injectors? Obviously The BDI come with a longer warranty 2 years, but have the new Toyota Injectors been upgraded? some advice would be appreciated.

          • The current spec 316 injector from Denso has a hardened "Diamond Like Coating" (DLC). They seem to be more reliable than the earlier spec. Mine have run faultlessly for 40K. The general consensus is that the injectors should be replaced after 100 - 120K regardless.

              • Hi, pradofriends downunder!
I'm new here and like to introduce myself. I'm going to be 57 this year and leave in Austria. My white Prado is modell 08 and has done 2230000 km. In 2010 with 66000km on the clock it got new injectors under warranty, since I was concerned by some light rattling, and especially by many postings in the forums. After a few months later, I sometimes noted rattling during warmup and light accelerating.
Over the years the rattling become more often. Now I realised that it is more when the air is dry ,irrespective of air temperature and when driving in high terrain in thinner air. The engine runs smooth until temperature gage starts to rise, so some 50°C. Therafter I have this noise, it sounds like petrol engine is running on low grad petrol, only during moderate power and midrange rpms. There is nothing on idle power, high power or beyond 2800 rpm.
The feedback still show good figures, all of them below 1.0 under all conditions from cold start to fully warmed up. Only number 4 gave me a reading of -1.2 once for short. Mostly it is -0.5 to -0.9.
And this injector has the highest value every reading.
Adding injector cleaner from Liquy Moly had a positive effect some years ago and then immediately so I thought more of an improvement of the dieselfuel than a cleaning effect. Since a year or so it has no effect at all. I replaced the MAF and last month I removed and cleaned the whole EGR and intake.
                So now my question:
Is it still possible that the cause is an injector with even good feedback values, under certain conditions only and not always?
I found out that the ECU signals 2 pilot injectons. One up to approximately 2300 rpm and another one up to 2800 rpm. Whithout those pilot injectons it runs smooth as this engine can.
I will appreciate any thoughts and help. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a injector and turbo specialist to look/listen at it to make up my mind for further action. I still love driving this car and especially my wife would be sad if I would sell it. I am concerned by ending up with a ruined piston one day caused by faulty injection.
                Regards from Austria,
                Roman

316 are part DLC. Yes they are much better.
The BDG are full coated command piston/ spindle. They may last longer, time will tell.

Injectors are everything on these vehicles.
Yes you can get rattles with good feedback values.
With these vehicles they are always quieter with new injectors, even vehicles with in spec feedbacks.
Noise is not good. Quiet is good, As long as your feedbacks are in spec also.

                    • Blitfritz - The Suction Control Valve on the fuel pump may need replacing. Check your fuel pressure readings.... if it fluctuates a lot (technical term) it may be worth replacing. There s a thread here all about it if you do a search.

                      • Thanks a lot for ideas. Today I made up my mind to replace all 4 injectors. I have an appointment on Friday next week. I will ask my mechanic to check for the suction control valve, as well as to look for the valve clearance and the pistons through the injector bore.
I hope everything is fine with replacing the injectors.
                        Keep you updated,
                        Regards!

                        • Just for my understanding. Is there any reasonable explanation why it's absolutely quiat when cold, but starts to rattle when cooling fluid rises above 50°C?

                              From memory, 9nm.
I use 1/4 drive & tighten till I'm happy I'm many passes to keep it even, prevent distortion. Never had an issue.
