Haha, this time of year not a chance.......

If it can wait until later half of Jan I'm sure we could work something out, but who wants to be without a car that long. Surely there is at least a half decent mechanic in Gladstone. It's not a hard job to do, just have to be through and pedantic about cleanliness.

    • Hi all,
With all the doom and gloom thought I'd share my cars details. I have an 08 model, I have been reading this and related threads with interest as it has done 170,000km. Thanks to the post about the recall I have discovered I missed out on the bad seats by just days (ordered the car in 07)..... However as I do some light towing I was concerned about the injectors, after speaking with my mechanic and local diesel specialist decided to get the Techstream kit to check myself.
      Cold start test reveals: (#1 0.7) (#2 -.07) (#3 -1.0) (#4 0.7)
Obviously very happy with results and will keep the injectors for now. Will definitely clean then install EGR plate (7mm) and new exhaust with EGT guage when funds allow (prior to cape trip 2016).

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to those who have posted this invaluable info and advice, car has never been driven excessively hard, no chip fitted and only minor towing, it seems from what I have read this seems to be the biggest contributor in the injector life.

      Cheers, Drew

        Cool,

What is the total injection volume?

        • To be honest that's all I recorded, will run again and send through the data

            • That total volume is a bit high, but your engine run time is only 29 seconds. You should run the engine from cold and watch as the volume should decrease as the engine warms up and ideally be well under 12mm3. Mine starts at about 13/14 and rapidly drops to high 6 low 7mm3 as engine gets closer to 80 odd degrees. I'm sure #### will comment on that figure you have shown. Like this:

              • Injection volume off the chart - are you sure that's at hot idle with no electrical loads on or A/C

                  Thanks Dave and Rick,
I think run time was 57s. I was under the impression readings should be taken about 1 min from cold start? A/C would have been on (climate control)
Are you able to point me in the right direction for testing? Wait until temp is 80°C? Wait for total volume to drop?

                  Cheers

                  • Start with engine cold, ie first thing in the morning. All accessories, aircon, fans, etc should be off so that the only thing running is the engine. Take a snap shot at start up, and then monitor as it warms up. The injector feedback values will alter as she warms up and should settle after a few minutes. Some will say anything up to + or - 2.5 is acceptable, Toyota will say anything up to as high as + or - 5.0 is okay but most here agree they are dreaming. Other diesel mechanics will be happy with up to + or - 3.5. One of my old ones pinged at +2.7 and I binned the lot. The injector total volume will initially be high (cold start), mine starts at just under 12mm3, but will quickly reduce as the motor warms. There is also an acceptable value for the fuel pump pressure deviation from target fuel pressure (which I can't recall) and this will indicate whether it's time to replace the SCV.

                    • 170k = shagged injectors.
That's why I asked what's the total volume.
Everybody seems to be focused on individual feedbacks alone.

Total volume too high for cold start.

So what is it at 83 degrees? Please.....

                        Hi ####,
You will have to excuse my ignorance, I am not a mechanic and am just trying to get my head around all this stuff from what I read on the forum. Following the other comments I ran techstream again yesterday, below are the results at coolant 80 degrees. Is this close enough or shall I run again at 83?
                        Thanks for your help

                        • Hi all, just ticked over 150k in my 09 120GXL. Put the car in for its service and timing belt replacement. Had planned on replacing the injectors at the 160k service - now booked in for next Tuesday. Oh and the clutch is on the way out.

Car has felt fine, economy good, no loss of power but service manager came out to talk to me when I picked the car up this afternoon. As soon as he said the word injectors I just told him to book it in. Would hate to go through what many of you have already suffered! Now I'm hoping for another 150k of trouble free driving

                          Cheers

                            No problamo
                            That's ok at 80.
The total volume is a bit high, reflecting wear. Between the very high cold start figure & only going down to 10ish warm, you need to renew them.
BDG recommends from 9mm is time to replace.

I note your egr position at 0%.
Is it always like that? It seems some are.
Have you done any egr mod yet?

In your screen shot it shows the egr position at 0% so it's closed

It's all good news! You have done 170,000k on a set of common rail injectors & appears have not blown a hole in a piston or 2.
Time for them to go! That's all.
