  • Hi guys, spoke to the people who serviced my car and confirmed they didn't write down the injector values, but they're happy to run the test again for $180 :-( and give me a report. I asked if they were across this discussion about injector problems and they said no. I was trying to find a reference to the Europe recall but my google-fu has failed me, I can find plenty of references on Australian sites saying there was a recall, but not sure how to find the actual recall. Does anyone have a link to a page that actually describes the recall in Europe? Unfortunately if you go to the Toyota UK website they require a registration number or VIN to check for recalls.

I should also mention that in my discussion with them, Toyota were very big on the "Australia has dirty fuel" line - I am not expert enough to know whether this is a reasonable claim, but if so, why do they sell cars that have such trouble using Australian fuel?

On the issue of changing my oil every 5000kms, it seems to me that this car can have a lot of hidden service costs! With a supposed 10,000 km service interval, shelling out to change oil and filter at double that rate seems excessive. I appreciate that a lot of you are doing that because you are using your vehicles off road a lot and value it as a long term investment. For me, doing a lot less 4wd-ing than I used to, and Toyota suggesting they could clean my injectors every service at a cost of $190, it is starting to seem like a bit of a money pit. I'm not trolling, I realise there are a lot of great features of this vehicle, but any way you look at it, the costs seem to be a lot higher than I've had with previous vehicles, including an older Hilux diesel.

    • If Toyota are serious that the problem is dirty Australian fuel then they either need to improve the filtration provided from factory or withdraw the diesel from sale as it is not fit for service in Australia. Sick of hearing Toyota's excuses

Run the test again for $180??? Rip off!!!
They should charge you 1/2 hr labour.

Change oil at 5000k no filter, it's not a service it's a 5 minute job. $100 worth of oil & labour. Or $55 worth of oil if you DIY.
Forget about $190 Injector cleaning, put the money away for your new set of injectors every 120k or so.

Took back to engine rebuilder for warranty, injectors removed, cleaned, seats/seals replaced and sump removed to clean pick up screen. He was a bit vague on cause of failure but did say it looked like one 'possibly' had a slight leak. He covered it under warranty with no questions asked so he must have found something wrong.

Interestingly, he claims to be rebuilding the 1kd engines and shipping them Australia wide at a rate of between 3 and 5 a week!!!!!
Interesting. Thank you for sharing. So the 5000k oil change is good insurance

Now I always think, was it a dirty hole? Some foreign material got in the way of the seat, no tension wrench, or a bad one?

          • Hi all, its been a while since I posted anything on this thread because I reluctantly sold my prado due to towing capacity and other reasons as well, but to be honest I was also fed up with these injector issues. I will try and briefly summerize my issues and previous posts. Bought car off mate at 80,000 kms, well looked after and serviced regularly, rattle and white smoke at 82,000 kms, service at 90,000 and Toyota said nothing wrong with engine, (smoke and rattle normal), service at 100,000 by my private mechanic, dropped sump and discovered oil pick up 95% blocked with carbon deposits, cleaned pick up and replaced sump, 120,000 km service I had injectors (baileys) pipes and seals replaced but sump not checked only oil changed, Prado going like a rocket, no rattle, no white smoke, 128,000 I sell vehicle because of towing weight restrictions, I had it serviced for new owner inc road worthy etc, I instruct my mechanic to drop sump to check for carbon deposits (for peace of mind for myself and new owner), the pick up was 98% blocked and the sump was crappy as well. I instructed the new owner to have pick up checked every 20,000 kms. Ive since bought a BT50 and love it! The warning here is, dont rely on Toyota and have your injectors scanned reguarly and check your sump as well. The new owner had this car checked by State wide Vehicle check who started it cold and said it was one of the quietest engines he had listened too.

              • Bloody hell Dave, scary storey!

I must say that less than 6 months after (baileys) injectors and then Suction Control Valve a little while after that - I do seem to think the SCV is starting to 'chatter' again.

Just had a service (130k) and pick up screen was clear but still got me wondering...
                Cheers

I forget to mention that the Prado was the first of the D4 common rail and was built November 2006. This had the old injector seals and have since been upgraded from late 2007 I believe. When I had the inectors etc replaced at the 120,000 mark these updated seals were used. Im not sure of any issues with the latest D4 prados but all be aware and check out all the threads on this post regarding this serious pain in the ar.. problem. Cheers Dave

                  • SCV

I have heard of & also experienced problems with "new" Scv, so don't assume because its new its sweet.

                    • Fair point ####, to fault it should I just check its resistance (1.9 - 2.1 ohms) in-situ, or do I have to take it off the pump and visually inspect?
                      Cheers

I look at the fuel pressure & how it's behaving.
                        Also the m/v.

                              • Had Baileys installed in August locally by their recommended installer - all very efficient and good. Bailey's on time and as quoted.

                                Been running well since.
