    • Which injectors went back in and did they do all four? Best bet is to get the feedback values read. Could be time to change out the seals too if the old style went back in.

      • Interesting after a discussion last night, I was intrigued at the cost of the replacement of the injector seals on the D4D to the new type as most dealerships don't do it apparently at the 80K service on the diesel.

I checked with my local Toyota dealer and they said parts and labour to do it was $600....

        Cheers

Currently in Dunsborough and about to head off to the Kimberly in a couple of weeks so really don't need the hassle or expense again. Makes me start thinking of trading to a petrol or an earlier model diesel.
Drop in on your way mate - I can check your injectors.

          • I have a 2005 Prado and I think I'm getting this rattle. I'm not a diesel mechanic or anything but the rattle sounds sort of like a nut bouncing around in the bottom if the engine. It does happen when it's cold and it does go away. Would this be the same rattle because I'm not sure if I have the D4D.

            • 2005 you won't have a D4D, so your issue will not be the one discussed in this thread.

              Cheers Andrew

Thanks anyway but I've got it booked into A1 Diesels tomorrow to get it checked out.

                    • Hey Guys,

Mate of mine just had his Rodeo injectors replaced, started knocking in the morning. He says the mechanic recommended replacing the injector seals with stainless ones instead of copper ones, which are original. Copper ones do not last, and Toyota know about it, but as they last past the warranty, they don't need to worry. (in other words, they are going for cheap options with the diesel engine, only between 03-09 models I believe) Hope this helps. One of the reasons I went for petrol on my 120.

                      • Got my car back this morning, thankfully all good. Turns out the injectors are still fine, a valve in the injector pump was gummed up causing the fuel pressure to fluctuate wildly. Dirty fuel? Possibly, the fuel filter also had some gunge in it. Bloke said it looked like Biofuel had been used in it but we've never knowingly put that in our car. I was also advised to change the under bonnet filter every 10000km as well considering the sort of travelling we do.
                        Anyway, all happy now.
Oh and in response to your question mjrandon, all 4 injectors were replaced at 108000km with new Denso ones. That was back in aug 2012.

                        • Looks like I might be joining the 'caught it just in time' group.

                          Late '08 D4D 150,000 km.
Full Toyota service history, use BP fuel 99% of the time, catch can fitted, 3 " exhaust fitted, use flash lube injector cleaner, or morleys injector cleaner every second tank, oil dropped every 5 k between services.

So I dropped the oil on the weekend, and poked the inspection camera into the sump. I noted two very small specks on the pick screen. Maybe covering 5% of the screen

Ran the check Monday morning before work, and sure enough injector values were slipping

                          0.2
                          2.5
                          0
                          -2.5

                          Total volume 12.03

Took it into Toyota today, booked for another check next week, they first recommended Toyota injector clean. But thanks to what I've learnt on forums such as this, I stood my ground, and said, nope I've paid for an extended warranty, I want you to quote on replacing and see what we can get from the insurer.

I rang swann and spoke to bloke there that knew his stuff and said, so long as Toyota quote is at market rate, you shouldn't have any problems.

So I'll keep you in the loop, as things unfold.

                          • One of my work associates asked me today if I knew what would cause her 2006 D4D with 160K to blow white smoke. We took it straight to Toyota and they are going to do a cold start test tomorrow morning to check injector feedback values. When I questioned the service guy what they would do if the values came back in-spec he didn't know. I said how about dropping the oil and checking the deposit on the pick-up filter screen and he asked why would they need to do that. I said to check if the injector seals had failed. He then said he'd worked for Holden for 10 years but didn't know anything about Toyotas. His off-sider suggested the car may have some dirty fuel. I felt like grabbing him by the throat but somebody in my line of work isn't supposed to behave like that. Will advise what the outcome is.

                            • Result: 2 injectors out of spec and oil being allowed to leak back into the cylinders. They've quoted $3600 for 4 x recon injectors, plus fuel pipes includes about $650 in labour. Just as well we caught it, they are supposed to be travelling to the NT in a couple of weeks towing their caravan.
