I suspect my KDJ120R has the "death rattle" as it possesses all the classic symptoms...however it also will struggle to start when facing down hill and when it does it blows massive amounts of smoke for the first few minutes. On a couple of occasions its not started until the 3rd or 4th try.
Is this the injector/valve problem or is there something more sinister going on?
Cheers
Obe

It's very sinister.
Sounds like you have shagged injectors.
More importantly the copper seats leaking & your engine may seize up.
Read the thread in my signature if you wish to understand it a bit more.
Time to get somebody reliable to have a good look before it goes BANG and costs you $12 - 20K to fix. Do not hesitate as it hasn't got long to live going by what you are saying and my own personal experience.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.
Does anyone have a copy of the Baileys' guide for fitting 1KD-FTV injectors they might be able to email me? Have read this before and looked ideal to be refering to alongside the workshop manual. Went to get a copy of it yesterday and it doesn't seem to be downloadable from their site anymore.

No sorry, but feel free to contact me & I will give you a few tips.
Thanks all for the info and thanks #### for your detailed post about this problem.
I have just called my local Toyota and they tell me that the injector check is under a recall so it's free to have them checked I do have to pay for the injectors etc. it they are damaged but only 30 minutes labour cost for the entire job. As part of the recall they also check the oil pickup.
I asked if they replace the copper seats with a different part however the booking person didn't know. I assume that Toyota wouldn't be so silly to replace the faulty part with the same part but I thought I'd ask.
My car has done 114,000 miles and makes a real racket when left over night to completely cool. So recently had my injectors supposedly serviced but I have a suspicion they have only had new tips and been recalibrated. I think the rest of the mechanics inside may have remained untouched. Anyway attached are my warm and cold techstream captures. Whats the thoughts ? Once shes warmed up shes absolutely fine.
Blowing smoke on startup with the nose down is classic of the blown injector seal according to Baileys. I would get the seals changed immediately and get them to check your oil intake sieve at the same time.
Otherwise your engine may get starved of oil - which is not good!

No problems.
You don't have to buy injectors off Toyota, you can buy them much cheaper. New fuel pies also.
Yes they use the revised seats for the last 7+ years, they are good for at least 120k, when installed correctly.
Finally got the prado into Toyota today for the injector check up and it seems they were quite a way out. Apparently 5mm3/st was all their system could measure. #1 = 5.0 mm3/st, #2 = -2.2, #3 = -2.4 mm, #4 = -1.0
