diesel rattle in D4D Prado

  • Yeah, the problem to my mind is the spindles, and its really only 2013+ anything that i'd trust.

    They all quote that the 150series is better, i think you'll find that they will start dropping now. its just a question of time and K's. Obviously the 120 series has 4 years on the other > and looking at the notes on the forum, the first of the real posts started coming through for new injectors around 2010
    ... i believe its coming....

    Listen to me and my rather pessimistic tone.

    • Guys any idea when the coated spindles were first used? Build date or VIN? Different part numbers?

      • Just to let you guys know I'm in the process now of speaking to Toyota in regards to the injectors on my Prado. I know this is going to be an up hill battle but it's worth a try I think. Will keep you updated.

            • Well there are so many 150's on the road surely this will end up in the paper or something....after all 85%+ of new Prado's are D4D's.

                There's a few 120's around, did they get in a paper? I don't read Papers, the trading post is long gone

                • There were reports of "diesel problems' in general. Mainly around EGR and fuel systems, so this is just a continuation of the same problem.

                  These things wear out at a considerable rate and will require replacement.

                  • Have just received all my service records that I requested from the toyota dealer. It does show as early as the 10000km service that the car was "rough on idle in gear", which was not diagnosed. 20000km showed nothing and then there is not another till 50000 (we took it to another mechanic to see if he knew what the problem was) At the 50000 service, it says "check noisey engine" with diagnostic equipment installed and injector values were "even", with injector cleaner added.

                    Just wondering what your thoughts are, do you think I have a case at all. They obviously eventually did check the injectors, but even though the values were correct the injector would still have been faulty to make so much rattle?

                    • Yeah mate, i think its worth a throw of the dice.

                      Essentially we find that many of these 'cleaners' have a bunch of lubrication added, so the friction related injectors problems can go away for a little while. So if they took the values immediately after this, maybe explain why the readings were ok.

                      It can also be a suction control valve failure.

                      Noisy engines are Noisy engines, which ever way it goes, get it sorted + good luck

                      • I'm so over owning a D4D!!
                        Now we've got a noisy engine again! Not so much when cold which I thought was unusual, but my injection specialist has checked it out and #4 injector is F****d. A reading of 5+.
                        Those injectors have only lasted around 60000km(engine is up to 170000km now). Suspect we've copped some bad fuel somewhere in our travels but who can tell. Just hope it hasn't done any other damage.
                        Have been quoted $2300 to replace the injectors. I'm going to clean the tanks out this weekend before we get it fixed next week.
                        Anyone have a nice V6 120 for sale? Do you a swap?

                            • That's not good Whitey. Even though mine have only done about 7,000km I still check them every month. I wonder if yours were older stock Densos? Mine were made in 2013 and should be the later edition.

                              • Today I was parked outside Bunnings with a 150 alongside. Just as we were leaving the people also got into the 150 and fired it up. I could here the rattle even with my windows up and aircon working. Not good for them. I got his attention and gave him a heads-up on the potential problem.
